The best Chinese food in Singapore, according to the experts: The 50, the Michelin Guide, and the Chinese Restaurant Awards have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Born comes out on top.

More Less

Imperial Treasure Fine Teochew Cuisine and Lei Garden Restaurant hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The 50 next.

  1. Rank 1. Born

    Modern Chinese

A former rickshaw depot at a Chinatown crossroads, the triangular building alone stops traffic before you step inside. Born is a fine dining restaurant where glass ceilings and a suspended paper sculpture set the tone for chef Zor Tan's multi-course menu: Modern Chinese cooking shaped by French technique, with each course tied to a principle like Memory or Legacy. It holds a Michelin star and a spot on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants.

  6. Rank 2. Summer Pavilion

    Cantonese Seafood

The dining room sits inside a modern Chinese garden within The Ritz-Carlton Millenia, which makes lunch here feel vaguely like eating inside a very expensive terrarium, in the best sense. This is formal Cantonese fine dining, Michelin-starred, with hand-painted crockery and a kitchen that treats abalone as a given. The wine list and specialty tea selection are both taken seriously, which is a rare thing to say without irony.

  7. The dining room looks out over Marina Bay with the kind of view that makes first-timers forget what they ordered. This is a Cantonese fine-dining room inside the Parkroyal Collection, where the kitchen turns classic Chinese cooking toward something a little more composed and contemporary. The chef has been doing this a long time, and the plating shows it. A good pick if you want dim sum to dress up for.

  17. Kok Sen is a no-frills zi char spot on Keong Saik Road, which has since filled up with boutique hotels and cocktail bars that probably don't know it was here first. It's wok-fried Cantonese home cooking, ordered fast and eaten faster, and the Bib Gourmand has not shortened the wait. Put your name down, then spend the half hour studying how efficiently the staff ignore you. Bring cash-register patience and an appetite for gravy.

  35. Cantonese fine dining inside the Crystal Jade group, which spans much of Asia, but this Orchard Road outpost is the only one in the family holding a Michelin star. The room draws local families who clearly never need the menu, and the kitchen splits its attention between contemporary Cantonese and Teochew cooking, a combination rare enough that it doubles as a reason to visit on its own.

  53. The Peking duck here gets air-dried for 48 hours and slow-roasted over lychee wood, a method old enough to predate the restaurant industry as a concept. This is a polished Chinese dining room on the fifth floor of Paragon, all dark wood and circular tables, where the food does the talking and the room wisely stays out of the way. Pre-order the duck; showing up without one is an optimism that rarely pays off.

  62. Keng Eng Kee is a zi char hawker spot in Alexandra Village, with ceiling fans, fluorescent lights, and round tables built for large families who order for the whole group at once. The pork ribs come glazed in a coffee gravy, and the moonlight hor fun arrives with a raw yolk on top that you stir in yourself. Dress for the humidity and bring more people than you think you need.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
