The best places to eat and stay in Calgary, according to the experts: The 50, Canada's 100 Best, and Air Canada have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Eight comes out on top.
More Less
DOPO and River Café hold the next two places. AAA shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Air Canada next.

Rank 1. Eight
Japanese
You start with a phone call from a white handset in a hotel lobby, then follow someone through a maintenance corridor to a gilded parlour for cocktails, then slip through a hidden door to eight counter seats facing an open kitchen. That is the whole restaurant. Darren MacLean runs a Japanese-influenced tasting menu of around twenty courses built on hyper-seasonal Canadian ingredients, and photographs are forbidden. It holds a spot on North America's 50 Best Restaurants list.

Rank 2. DOPO
Tuscan Tavern
A below-ground Tuscan tavern where the kitchen leans into luxe ingredients without losing the rustic soul. The team behind it comes from fine-dining stock, and the pasta is made in-house, sauced simply. Grilled bread with whipped ricotta and pickled green tomatoes show up early and are hard to argue with. The wine list tilts Italian, and the room has a warmth that makes a two-hour dinner feel like a reasonable Tuesday. It landed on Canada's 100 Best list.

Rank 3. River Café
Rocky Mountain Canadian Café
Sitting on a small island in the middle of the Bow River, surrounded by Prince's Island Park, this rustic dining room feels like a cabin that wandered into the city and decided to stay. Exposed wood, stone, and vintage fishing gear set the mood, and fireplace tables are fought over in winter with quiet desperation. The kitchen commits to Canadian and Albertan ingredients only, landing on Canada's 100 Best list. The patio, when weather allows, is the whole argument.

Omakase Japanese
Six seats wrap an omakase bar where 17 to 20 courses lean on sustainably sourced, mostly Canadian fish and produce some of it grown on the chef's own farm. Darren MacLean runs Japanese technique through an unmistakably Canadian larder, and the daikon "steak" alone makes a case for taking vegetables seriously. The sake list is long and thoughtful, the cocktails herbaceous. Canada's 100 Best puts it at number 75 in the country.

Named for Oscar Wilde's famously vain antihero, this Autograph Collection hotel in downtown Calgary leans into the reference with Art Deco lines, Victorian flourishes, and enough knowing winks to keep an English Lit graduate busy. The rooms are thoroughly modern underneath all that period cosplay. Restaurants lean on Alberta beef, which is the right call given the address. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

The grand lobby here has been greeting Calgarians since forever, and it shows in the best way: the bones are historic, the rooms have been quietly updated to feel neither fussy nor sterile, and the whole place carries the easy confidence of a hotel that has never needed to reinvent itself. The Michelin Guide selected it. Hawthorn Dining Room handles food and drinks all day, leaning on Alberta farmers and ranchers for what ends up on the plate.

Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Bow River and the Calgary skyline from most rooms, which sets the tone for this clean-lined hotel in East Village. The public spaces shift easily between laptop sessions and idle afternoons, and the design has texture without trying too hard. Galleries, riverfront paths, and a strong stretch of restaurants are all a short walk out the door. The Michelin Guide includes it among its selected hotels.

Nineteen rooms on the Bow River in Kensington, which already tells you this boutique hotel has a point of view. Ten-foot ceilings, curated art, and lighting that doesn't make you feel like you're being interrogated. Some rooms come with fireplaces or balconies. Outside, the neighborhood delivers independent cafés, galleries, and riverside paths, the kind of blocks that make a city feel like itself. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

The old Model Milk Dairy building on 17th gives this lively restaurant its name and its bones, with an open, industrial feel softened by a genuinely buzzy room. The menu changes every couple of weeks, pulling from local and regional producers, so there's no such thing as a regular order. Desserts lean into the building's dairy past with ice cream making an appearance. The wine and cocktail list is well considered.

Oak walls and polished concrete set the tone in the lobby, where the furniture arrangements shift to suit co-working or a quiet sit-down. It's a design-forward hotel in Calgary's University District, built to LEED standards and stocked with Canadian-made furnishings throughout the guest rooms. Large windows and bold graphics keep things lively without tipping into try-hard. The Rockies are a reasonable drive out, and the neighbourhood handles most other needs on foot.

Hawaiian
Surf photography covers the walls and the blue décor commits hard to the bit at this Hawaiian comfort food spot on Macleod Trail. The menu leans into plate lunches, poke, Spam musubi, and huli huli chicken, with tropical cocktails that come alcohol-free if you'd rather. It's the kind of casual, shareable-plates place where the servers know the menu cold and nobody's in a hurry to rush you out.

Creative Mediterranean
A stylish Mediterranean small-plates restaurant where the mezze menu is designed for mixing, matching, and ordering one more round before you've decided you're done. The room leans into cool lighting and a central bar that keeps things lively, and the cocktail list holds its own alongside the food. The crowd skews toward people who know how to split a bill twelve ways without drama.

Rank 22. Luca Restaurant
Italian
Servers in white jackets move through a room of crisp linens and glass chandeliers, which tells you everything about the register before you've opened the menu. This is a polished Italian dining room with a short, focused menu that runs from whipped ricotta bruschetta through gourmet pastas to lobster risotto and a pistachio-crusted lamb rack. The wine list leans Italian, and the cocktail program covers both the spirited and the sober.

Chandeliers hang over a dining room full of ornate flourishes and soaring windows, which sets the stage for an Indian restaurant that doesn't do anything quietly. The menu covers serious ground: tandoor specialties, dosas, idlis, biryanis, curries, and a long run of snacks to graze through before you commit to a main. Themed craft cocktails keep the evening moving. A good pick when you want the full occasion, not just a meal.

Rank 38. Paper Lantern
Vietnamese Cocktail Bar
Down a staircase beneath a Chinatown restaurant, red lanterns mark this below-street Vietnamese cocktail bar as something worth finding. The drinks lean tropical but take detours, like a Vietnamese iced coffee built with cold brew, condensed milk, and coconut. Small plates of bánh mì and shaken beef have a way of appearing at tables where nobody ordered food. It landed on Canada's 100 Best Bars list, which tracks, given how often people seem to lose track of time here.

Rank 38. Pizza Culture
Neapolitan Pizzeria
Neapolitan pizza from a chef who spent fifteen years in someone else's kitchen before opening his own casual spot on Edmonton Trail. The dough is certified by one of Italy's leading associations, and the wood-fired results show it. Ranked 81st on the 50 Top Pizza World list, which for a Calgary neighborhood pizzeria is a fairly extraordinary number. The staff has the easy warmth of people who are genuinely glad you showed up.
