The best wine bars in Hungary, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide has weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Borkonyha Winekitchen comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Budapest and Balatonfüred.

Cuisines

  1. A Michelin-starred modern restaurant steps from the Basilica, where the kitchen lets Hungarian ingredients do the talking rather than burying them under technique. The tasting menu is the move, built around subtle Magyar influences and dishes with real depth of flavor. The wine list runs to a hundred labels, leaning into Hungary's own producers, many available by the glass, which is a rarer commitment than it sounds.

  2. Rank 2. Cabrio

    Natural Wine Bar

A tree-shaded terrace on a small city-centre square sets the mood at this natural wine bar, where the bottles are 100% natural and generously priced, drawn from Hungary and around Europe. The team are happy to talk you through both the wine list and the concise seasonal small plates, three of which tend to do the job. The Bib Gourmand confirms the kitchen punches above its price point. Come for the wine; stay because the afternoon got away from you.

  3. Rank 3. Sauska 48

    Modern Eastern European Wine Bar

The terrace faces straight out over the vines and the hills behind them, and on a warm afternoon it's hard to argue with that as a setting for lunch. This modern winery restaurant in Villány serves a concise menu of contemporary Hungarian cooking, and the wine list pulls from the estate in front of you as well as the owners' Tokaj operation up north. The team will happily walk you through the pairings, which is half the point of eating here.

  4. Rank 3. Zelna Bisztró

    Eastern European Wine Bar

Named for the biodynamic wine producer whose bottles fill the list (and the shelves, if you want to take one home), Zelna is a wine bar in the livelier quarter of this lakeside seasonal town. The menu is short and flexible, running from light bites to proper Hungarian plates like braised beef cheeks, with golden walnut dumplings to finish. Every seat is on the terrace, and the kitchen keeps going until 2am.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
