The best Italian food in Hungary, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide and 50 Top Pizza have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Anyukám Mondta comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Budapest and Encs.

More Less

Alelí and Avalon Ristorante hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with 50 Top Pizza next.

  1. Rank 1. Anyukám Mondta

    Mediterranean Italian

The focaccia comes out of a wood-fired oven, and that detail tells you a lot about what kind of neighborhood restaurant this is. The menu moves between homemade pizzas, modern Italian plates, and daily specials that occasionally take a turn toward the Middle East. Prices stretch across enough range that you can eat here casually or push further into dinner territory. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the service runs with genuine warmth rather than ceremony.

  2. Rank 2. Alelí

    Italian

High ceilings and a chic bar set the mood at this Italian restaurant inside the Dorothea Hotel, steps from the Danube. The kitchen leans on imported Italian produce for focaccias, hand-rolled pastas, and risottos, with a cacio e pepe that earns its reputation and a tiramisu built for sharing. Salads are dressed tableside, which is either charming or theatrical depending on your mood. The staff will happily steer you through the wine list.

  4. Rank 2. Fausto's

    Italian

A glass-enclosed terrace in Buda sets the tone at Fausto's, an upscale Italian restaurant where the presentation of the food is clearly keeping pace with the surroundings. The chef behind it has been feeding Budapest for a long time, and the move across the river seems to have added energy rather than costing it. Smart and unhurried, this is the kind of room where the pasta course arrives and you stop checking your phone.

  5. Rank 5. Forni di Napoli

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

Budapest is not obvious Neapolitan pizza territory, but Forni di Napoli has made it one anyway. This wood-fired pizzeria runs a high-hydration dough that produces a soft, charred crust, and the kitchen stocks Italian DOP ingredients with the seriousness of someone who flew them in personally. The room has the energy of a Neapolitan Sunday lunch that never quite ends, and the staff treat every table like a personal project.

  6. Rank 5. Glutilino

    Gluten-Free Pizzeria

A gluten-free pizzeria where nobody has to ask, because the whole menu already is. Round Neapolitan-style pies, pastries, and a room that's simple but put-together with care. The kitchen has clearly done the homework to make gluten-free dough feel like a choice rather than a consolation prize. It landed on 50 Top Pizza Europe's Excellent Pizzerias list, which tells you this isn't just a workaround restaurant.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
