The best French food in Hungary, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide has weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Arany Kaviár comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Budapest.

Bilanx and KOLLÁZS Brasserie & Bar hold the next two places.

Rank 1. Arany Kaviár
French
Roughly 20 Hungarian and Siberian caviars on the menu sets the tone before you've even sat down. This is a formal, old-world Budapest restaurant where French and Russian influences share the kitchen, some dishes have been on the menu since opening, and the tasting menu leans into the chef's personal favorites. The dining room runs full opulent-velvet, while a modern extension opens onto a garden for those who prefer their extravagance al fresco.

Rank 1. Bilanx
Hungarian French
Neon light strips arch over white-tile-topped tables in a spare townhouse dining room halfway between the Chain Bridge and St. Stephen's Basilica. Bilanx is a contemporary tasting-menu restaurant where the chef marries Hungarian produce with classical French technique, a combination that sounds like homework but tastes like a decision. A shorter three-course lunch menu makes the whole thing easier to stumble into on a weekday afternoon.

The steak tartare is made tableside, which tells you everything about the register here: a brasserie inside the Four Seasons Gresham Palace that plays it classically French, with a handful of Hungarian dishes folded in. The room is art nouveau and the Chain Bridge is right outside the window, so the setting does a lot of the work. Roast chicken for two gets carved in front of you, and the rum baba has its fans.
