The best steakhouses in New Zealand, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide has weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Bessie comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Auckland and Christchurch.

Charley Noble and Jervois Steak House hold the next two places.

  1. Rank 1. Bessie

    Steakhouse

The ageing room sits right next to the kitchen, visible and unapologetic, a glass cabinet full of Canterbury grass-fed beef doing its slow, dark work. This is a steakhouse, all long tables and booths in a moody industrial room, where the meat goes into a Spanish charcoal oven and comes out with serious intent. Sides run more creative than the usual, and the Akaroa King salmon is there for anyone who wandered in with a steak-lover.

  2. Rank 1. Charley Noble

    Steakhouse

The rib-eye here gets 55 days of in-house dry-aging before it goes over mānuka and apple wood, which tells you most of what you need to know about the priorities. This is a steakhouse in Wellington's CBD, tucked into a historic building whose tall windows and high ceilings give it none of the dark, leathery gloom the genre usually insists on. Lumina lamb and market fish round out the menu for anyone who wandered in under peer pressure.

  3. An open fireplace anchors the main dining room at this two-floor steakhouse inside the Sofitel Complex, where charcoal-cooked Angus from New Zealand shares the menu with Wagyu from Australia and Japan. The wine list runs to over 40 by the glass, which is either very generous or a trap, depending on how the evening goes. The kind of place you go when the occasion demands red meat and no apologies.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
