Sections

Tap to add or drop a section. At least one stays on.

The best places to eat and stay in Hanoi, according to the experts: Forbes Travel Guide, Michelin Guide, and The 50 have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Capella Hanoi comes out on top.

More Less

Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi and Gia hold the next two places. Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with World Coffee Map next.

Departments

A department belongs to one section, so choosing one narrows the list to it.

  1. Bill Bensley designed this 47-room luxury hotel as a love letter to the opera house a few blocks away, imagining where the singers and costume designers might have stayed during the golden age of the art form. Every room pays tribute to a different opera figure, the spa runs theatrical, and the drinking options range from a chic bar to a full cocktail lounge. It holds a Forbes Five Star and three Michelin Keys, which tells you roughly what a night here costs.

  2. Graham Greene and Charlie Chaplin once slept here, and the suites still carry their names. This Forbes Four Star, Michelin One Key hotel near Hoan Kiem Lake is a colonial-era landmark whose original 1901 Heritage Wing has been carefully restored without losing the slight mustiness that makes old hotels feel earned. The newer Opera Wing adds a contemporary-classic counterpoint. Indochine-style rooms, a spa, an outdoor pool, and several dining options round it out.

  3. Rank 3. Gia

    Contemporary Vietnamese

A single tasting menu, no choices, no shortcuts, across the street from the Temple of Literature in the heart of Hanoi's old scholarly quarter. Gia is a contemporary Vietnamese fine dining room where the kitchen channels homesickness into something precise and quietly intricate, with acidity and texture doing a lot of the heavy lifting. It holds a Michelin star, and dishes that look calm on the plate tend to be anything but.

  7. The building itself reads like a dare, a swooping futuristic shell designed by Carlos Zapata Studios that overlooks the National Convention Center rather than the Old Quarter. This is a large, polished international hotel with 450 rooms, an expansive eighth-floor spa, indoor pool, and Japanese and Cantonese restaurants on site. The vibe is less colonial Hanoi and more contemporary Singapore, which is either a selling point or the whole point, depending on who you're asking.

  8. Rank 8. 1946 Cua Bac

    Vietnamese

The bright yellow-and-green townhouse at the end of a narrow alley is hard to miss, and the old wooden tables and vintage photographs inside make it feel like someone's very well-fed grandmother lives here. This Vietnamese restaurant earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand for a fried crab and rice porridge hot pot that brings crab, pigeon, and beef balls into a broth that tastes like it has been going since before you were born. English menus available; book ahead.

  9. A family that has been rolling bánh cuốn by hand for generations, on a street in Hoan Kiem that smells like it, this is an old-school Hanoi street food spot where the rice rolls come out gossamer-thin and the dipping sauce is a family secret nobody is asking questions about. The bún thang, a Hanoi noodle soup piled with toppings, runs alongside. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand.

    Northern Vietnamese

Bún chả is the signature at this Northern Vietnamese restaurant on one of Hanoi's liveliest dining streets, and the grilled pork arrives the way it should, smoky and served with rice vermicelli in broth. The crab spring rolls and Vietnamese flan round out a menu that stays close to the capital's street food roots. The two-storey shophouse also sells ceramics from local artisans, which is either charming or distracting depending on your appetite. A Michelin Bib Gourmand.

The daily menu changes with whatever the kitchen feels like cooking, which is the point at this cosy Vietnamese home-cooking spot tucked down a Hanoi lane. The vintage interior echoes a 1980s family dining room, and the food follows the same logic: stir-fried water spinach, deep-fried tofu, northern staples done without fuss. Staff will walk you through the Vietnamese menu in plain English. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the lunch crowd confirms the word is out, so book ahead.

  32. A boutique hotel on leafy Trần Phú Street, just west of the Old Quarter, where the rooftop infinity pool gives you the Hanoi skyline without the scooter soundtrack. The 60 rooms run to bold colors and modern bathrooms, with a spa, a gym, and an in-house tailor for anyone whose luggage didn't survive the trip. Temple of Literature and the lake are a short walk; the street food is even closer.

  34. A boutique hotel in Hoan Kiem where the mattresses are roughly the height of a small child and the color scheme reads like someone handed Toulouse-Lautrec a paint bucket, which is fitting, since the bar downstairs is named for him. The colonial bones get a French polish throughout, and the absinthe ritual at La Fée Verte is performed with the solemnity it deserves. Bold, deliberate, and not remotely interested in blending in.

  35. The design concept here borrows from both Swedish minimalism and French restraint, and somehow the two don't fight. This small hotel sits inside Hanoi's Old Quarter, one of the louder, more relentless neighborhoods on earth, and the interiors respond by going almost conspicuously quiet: natural textures, soft light, nothing competing for attention. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels. Think of it as somewhere to return to after the city has made its point.

  36. A Guinness-recognized woodblock painting anchors the lobby of this heritage-leaning hotel a short walk from Hoan Kiem Lake. Dong Ho and Hang Trong folk art traditions show up in the murals and custom furnishings, giving the rooms something to look at beyond the minibar. The rooftop bar and restaurant put you above Hanoi's noise at a comfortable remove, which turns out to be exactly the right distance.

  39. Rank 39. Gia

    Modern Vietnamese

Dark mahogany, emerald walls, and softly glowing orb lights set the mood before the food even arrives. Gia is a fine dining tasting menu restaurant near Văn Miếu, where the kitchen runs a twelve-course journey through Vietnamese cooking reshaped by the team's years in Australia, the UAE, Thailand, and Singapore. The flavors are rooted at home; the technique has clearly been everywhere else first.

  40. Some of the bungalows here sit directly on West Lake, reached by gently curving bridges, with the 800-year-old Golden Lotus Pagoda keeping watch from the shore. This InterContinental hotel trades French Colonial grandeur for contemporary rooms with wooden-slatted sliding doors and lantern-hung beds, most with lake-facing balconies. A cocktail pavilion lives on the bridge itself, which is either romantic or excessive depending on your mood, and the city center is ten minutes away.

  42. Rank 45. Azabu

    Japanese

A blonde wooden sushi counter on the second floor of a Hanoi hotel, with chefs working in full view, sets the tone for this Japanese restaurant. The menu runs from kaiseki to sashimi, and the omakase counter draws regulars willing to plan ahead. Lunch is the quiet move for value. The Michelin Guide lists it among its selected restaurants, and the team runs the room like they've done this a thousand times.

  46. Rank 45. Bếp Prime

    Vietnamese

A Vietnamese restaurant in a crumbling old building on Hang Dieu Street, Bep Prime pulls from the full breadth of the country's regional cooking with a clear soft spot for Hanoi. The kitchen's signature pigeon and mushroom hot pot arrives in a bird cage, which is exactly as theatrical as it sounds. The Michelin Guide lists it among its selected restaurants. Book ahead; the room is small and the regulars know it.

  50. Chả cá, grilled catfish rubbed with turmeric until it turns a burnished gold, is essentially the whole menu here, and that's a fine way to run a restaurant. This family-run Hanoi spot has been at it forever, with cheerful murals, checkered tablecloths, and service that moves with purpose. Fish spring rolls and fish soup round things out if you want to make an afternoon of it.

  52. Rank 45. Cồ Đàm

    Vegetarian Vietnamese

The terracotta arched entrance and ornate facade, drawn from Buddhist and Champa traditions, set expectations before you've even sat down. Cồ Đàm is a vegetarian Vietnamese restaurant spread across four floors, though the ground-floor pond and stone Buddha make a case for lingering there. Two set menus only, both modern takes on Vietnamese classics, with plating that suggests the kitchen takes presentation as seriously as flavor.

  56. A steak and seafood restaurant on the second floor of the Sheraton, with floor-to-ceiling views over West Lake that do a lot of heavy lifting on a humid Hanoi evening. The menu roams freely, pulling beef and seafood from whichever hemisphere is having a good season. The surf-and-turf format is the move here, with premium cuts alongside fresh seafood. It's a hotel restaurant, polished and unhurried, and the lake view makes it feel less like one.

  63. French fine dining inside the Sofitel Legend Metropole, where the crystal chandeliers and blue velvet banquettes have survived every renovation the twentieth century could throw at them. An old-school institution, the kind where lobster bisque arrives from a guéridon and crêpe Suzette is flambéed tableside with a seriousness that feels entirely earned. The tasting menu threads in quiet Vietnamese notes, which keeps things from feeling like a museum piece.

The patio wraps around Thien Quang Lake with enough tropical greenery to make you feel like you've stumbled into someone's very well-connected garden. This is a Vietnamese restaurant that pulls from the whole country, with Hanoi-style phở alongside bún bò huế and live seafood, plus Thai and Chinese dishes rounding things out. The Indochinese villa setting fills up fast, so book ahead unless you enjoy standing near other people's prawns.

  72. A colonial villa with a garden courtyard does a lot of heavy lifting for a casual Vietnamese restaurant, and Quán Ăn Ngon leans into every square foot of it. The menu roams the whole country, with photographs to help you navigate, and the kitchen's rice flour rolls, thin-skinned and generously filled, are a good reason to order before you've settled in. Prices stay well on the friendly side of the bill.

RAAW is a specialty coffee roastery and café in Thanh Xuân, fitted out in the kind of stripped-back minimalism that lets the coffee do the talking. Pour-overs and cold brews are the moves here. Laptops are quietly tolerated, and the room stays calm enough that you might actually get something done.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
