The Best Places to Eat and Stay in Queens

Eat + Stay, change section

Departments

A department belongs to one section, so choosing one narrows the list to it.

  1. A nomadic chalupa stand that bounces around northern Queens, posting intersections on Facebook like a food truck that's read too much Kerouac. Track it down and you're rewarded with tortillas fried in hot lard, then loaded with shredded pork, white onion, and whichever salsa you choose, or both. The New York Times named it among New York's top dishes of 2024 and ranked it on their 100 Best Restaurants list. Eight chalupas run about ten dollars.

  2. The servers at this Jackson Heights kebab counter have perfected the art of not noticing you exist, which a young rapper named Mr. Cardamom once called "horrendous and beautiful" while shooting a music video here. That rapper is now the mayor of New York City. The kebabs are tender, the biryani draws a crowd, and the room has been proudly scruffy for as long as anyone can remember.

  5. Rank 107. Bagels For You

  6. The sweet tomato sauce at this old-school Kew Gardens slice shop hints that yes, tomatoes are technically a fruit, and somehow that's not a problem. Locals have been devoted to it long enough to request it on the pesto pizza too, which is already doing fine on its own. The counter seats maybe four people, and the pizza arrives from the oven directly to your hands. The New York Times put it on their short list of the city's best.

The banh mi here come in wax-paper egg-roll bags, which tells you something about the register. This Elmhurst sandwich shop keeps the classics, pâté and head cheese, while slipping in Korean bulgogi alongside them. The fries arrive heaped with pickled daikon, cilantro, jalapeño, and a green sauce borrowed from Peruvian chicken spots. Julie Wong has said she wanted to embrace Queens as a melting pot, and the menu takes that brief literally.

  20. Rank 134. Joe’s Steam Rice Roll

    Cantonese Noodle Shop

Rice ground daily on-site in electric stone mills is the tell at this no-frills Flushing counter, a Cantonese cheong fun spot tucked into a minimall off Roosevelt Avenue. The noodle sheets come out nearly translucent, rolled around pork, shrimp, or egg to order. The New York Times gave it a Critic's Pick, which tracks: there are very few places in the city where the rice noodle itself is this clearly the point.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
