The best places to eat in Providence, according to the experts: AAA, James Beard Awards, and USA Today have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Gift Horse comes out on top.

More Less

Oberlin and Nicks on Broadway hold the next two places. The Infatuation shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with AAA close behind.

  1. Rank 1. Gift Horse

    Korean Seafood

Shuckers at the horseshoe bar crack open oysters from a dozen Rhode Island spots, and you dress them yourself with kimchi mignonette or fermented green-chile hot sauce. Gift Horse is a Korean-inflected New England seafood restaurant, the kind of place that slides littlenecks under crisp kimchi and broils butterfish in sweet-potato miso. The chef won a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Northeast in 2025, and the New York Times named two dishes among the best they ate all year.

  2. Rank 2. Oberlin

    American

Oberlin is a downtown Providence restaurant where locals take their New York friends to prove the city can be chic and still feed you well. The seafood plates rotate, the staff will talk you through the vermouth list without making you feel like a tourist, and the salt cod brandade arrives with grilled country bread. It's a James Beard Outstanding Restaurant nominee, and the raw bar next door handles the wait.

  4. Persimmon is an intimate American restaurant on Hope Street where the menu changes daily, so the website's answer to "what's for dinner?" is a shrug. The room is bright but cozy, and it fills with a cross-section of Providence, parents included, none of them there for the photos. It holds AAA Four Diamonds and was a James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Hospitality. Dress like you're trying to impress someone.

  5. Rank 6. Al Forno

    Italian

The grilled pizza here goes directly onto the flame, which does something to the crust that an oven simply cannot: a char-edged, smoke-threaded base that's thin enough to feel light but sturdy enough to carry its toppings. This is a full-menu Italian restaurant, not a slice shop, so come ready for pasta and roasted vegetables too. The room is bright, the pace is brisk, and the drinks list is short but chosen with care.

  6. Rank 6. Dolores

    Mexican

Dolores is a bright blue Mexican restaurant on Hope Street, cooking dishes from Puebla and Oaxaca, which is a lot of sunshine to commit to in a New England February. The bar goes well past tequila and mezcal into sotol and Oaxacan rum, and the sangria arrives by the pitcher, so bring people. The chef was a James Beard Best Chef: Northeast nominee, and you can also just sit down for tostadas and a drink.

  7. Rank 6. Marvin

    Pizzeria

Marvin is a pizzeria on Wickenden Street that dresses like the slice joint of your childhood, checkered paper and bar stools included, then quietly gets weird with the menu. There's a pepperoni negroni, a house pizza wine, and frozen custard waiting by the door for anyone with room left. The chef was a James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Northeast, which the high tops do a good job of hiding.

  8. Claudine is a tasting-menu-adjacent American restaurant from a couple who came up through Per Se, and they've brought the habits along. Drawn curtains, cozy booths, and a bathroom where the toilet paper gets refolded between visits make it feel like New York in a Providence-sized package. The menu shifts often, foam appears in more than one course, and it was a James Beard Best New Restaurant semifinalist.

  9. Hemenway's is a seafood grill on South Main Street that recently shook off its stuffy streak and went back to the flash of its 1985 roots. The menu runs from raw bar towers and local crudo to caviar-topped waffles and stuffed lobster. It's a dress-nicely, bring-a-card sort of dinner, though the bar works fine for oysters and a glass of albariño. AAA gives it three diamonds, if you need to tell the parents.

  11. Rank 12. Aguardente

    Contemporary Latin American

Industrial bones warmed up with wood and bright Latin American art set the tone at this Fox Point restaurant, where the menu roams from Guatemalan to Portuguese without much apology for the mileage. The bar runs lively, the small plates change with the seasons, and the paella arrives with enough shrimp, mussels, clams, squid, and chouriço to make ordering anything else feel like a mistake you'd regret quietly.

  13. Vines and trees cover nearly every inch of the interior, so dining here feels less like a restaurant and more like a very well-catered greenhouse. The menu leans into New England's coast, with a sustainable raw bar as the natural starting point before moving to shared plates built around seasonal vegetables and regional proteins. Weekend brunch draws a crowd that suggests the neighborhood has figured something out.

  17. Rank 12. Capriccio

    Northern Italian

Steak Diane finished tableside, crepes flambé lit to order, and a cognac list long enough to require its own evening: Capriccio has been doing Providence fine dining the old-fashioned way for a long time. The room is tucked into a building's basement, all exposed brick, candlelight, and white linen, which sounds like a cliche until you're actually in it. Continental and Northern Italian, semi-formal, and absolutely not the place to rush.

  25. Rank 25. Anna's Vesuviano

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

Anna's Vesuviano is a small, casual Neapolitan pizza joint on Doyle Ave where the crusts come out light and airy with leopard-spotted undersides. The mosaic tables are too small for the number of pies you'll inevitably order, which everyone treats as charm. Punk plays over the wine, and the wood-fired oven doesn't fully beat the chill, so bring a sweater in winter. Takeout is popular, but the bar seats fill up fast.

  26. Rank 25. Asian Bakery and Fast Food

    Vietnamese Sandwich Shop

  27. Rank 25. Ceremony

    Pan-Asian Café

Ceremony is a tea-focused cafe near Brown that also pours cocktails and natural wine, which is a lot of hats for one counter. The signature move is a reserved tea ceremony led by an apprentice, a quiet tasting that doubles as an exit from the Thayer Street scrum. Walk-ins can order an iced strawberry matcha latte with a giant gummy bear in it, then fight a student for a table.

  28. Rank 25. Club Frills

    American Burger Joint

Club Frills is a cocktail bar dressed as a 70s basement, with fake wood paneling, a disco ball, and tabletops that are marble only in spirit. It wears the dive costume without the sticky floors or the low prices. The drinks run low-ABV and funky, often in colors not found in nature, and the kitchen turns out a burger built around diced olives. It was a James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service.

  29. Rank 25. Debbie's

    Food Truck

Debbie's is a small downtown hot dog counter where the weiners get the kind of toppings you'd expect on a plate with a tasting menu, like creamy leeks, dijon, dill, and a crunch of Potato Stix. The chef came over from a late, lamented barbecue joint, which explains the sandwiches and sides. There are a couple of outdoor seats for people watching, or you can carry your dogs to the river and eat them like a civilized person.

  30. Den Den is a casual Korean cafe on Benefit Street, the kind of place where you order too much and nobody at the table objects. The menu runs from kimchi pancakes to bibimbap to soft tofu stew, plus a chicken karaage that has been known to make first dates feel promising. The brick dining room is cozy, and the RISD students drifting in and out make it feel like the neighborhood's unofficial canteen. It's an easy yes for parents on family weekend.

  31. Dune Brothers is a counter-service seafood shack in downtown Providence, which is a funny thing to say about a state where nobody is more than a few miles from water. You order at the window, then carry your fried fish and clam cakes across a shell-strewn patio to a picnic table. The Jonah crab roll rotates in as a special, and a cold Narragansett or a local Yacht Club soda goes with it. Dress for a quick lunch.

  32. A corner breakfast spot on Doyle Avenue where the menu can't decide between diner and bistro, so it lets you have both. Fluffy pancakes sit near the quiche, and the maple syrup is described, with a straight face, as "good syrup." There are potatoes in vinegar for the European mood and cubed hashbrowns for everyone else. On Fridays it quietly switches to dinner, with pasta, salads, and a short vermouth list.

  33. Rank 25. Gardel

    Argentine

Gardel is a small Argentine spot in Fox Point where the empanadas and croquetas arrive alongside a bottle of Malbec, and nobody pushes you toward the steak. Brown professors and students fill the cozy room, treating dinner as a cheap flight to Buenos Aires. They run empanada-making nights too, where you'll fold your pastry badly and the friendly staff will lie to you.

  34. Irregardless Biscuit is a tiny Southern breakfast counter in a building with roughly four tables, which is why the line tends to wander out onto Carpenter Street. The biscuits are big and fluffy, the sandwiches ride on them, and the chicory iced coffee does the heavy lifting on a hot morning. The candied bacon one is named for the previous tenant, a hole-in-the-wall breakfast spot, so getting yours to go doubles as a small memorial.

  35. Mémère's is a French bistro tucked inside the Neptune Hotel, dim and cozy, with off-white walls tinted to suggest decades of Gauloises that never happened. The menu is short and the wine list stretches to a $600 magnum of champagne, so dress for a date or an anniversary. Upstairs sleep is available, and the karaoke bar on the ground floor handles anyone who isn't ready to be reasonable.

  36. Rank 25. Sandwich Hut

    Italian Deli

Sandwich Hut is a takeout counter in Hope that builds Italian subs and treats pepperoncini less as a garnish than a core belief. The Allitalia stacks prosciutto, capocollo, pepperoni, and provolone under a generous drift of those crinkly green peppers. There are no tables to speak of, so plan on eating it on a walk, wearing some of it, and wiping oil off your jacket sleeve like a rite of passage.

  37. The Nitro Bar is a casual coffee shop on Broadway, and the nitro cold brew has convinced local firefighters to skip Dunkin', which in New England is practically a defection. Monthly specials run toward things like caramelized banana, and there's a breakfast sandwich with avocado and poblano aioli. The indoor space is small and shared with a bike shop, so take your drink outside if the weather cooperates.

  38. Track 15 is a food hall inside Union Station that squeezes seven local restaurants under one roof, so a group that can't agree on dinner gets to stop pretending. Order at the counters, cafeteria-style, then carry your tray to low-lit seating and a full bar of Rhode Island beer and booze. Indian, Turkish kebabs, burgers, and square Roman pizza are all on the table. In winter, the fried fish sandwich stands in for the beach.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
