The Best Seafood in Austria

The best seafood in Austria, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide has weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Schwarzfischer comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Neumarkt am Wallersee and Ossiach.

Cuisines

  1. A modern cube of a building beside a monastery pond, with a terrace that looks out over the kind of Austrian scenery that makes you briefly consider moving here. This is a casual fish restaurant where the trout and char come from the farm on-site, grilled over open charcoal in a kitchen you can watch from your table. The menu runs wider than the surroundings suggest, with meat and vegetarian options alongside the fish. Cyclists from the Inn River route fill the terrace in summer.

  2. A former abbey forge right on the edge of Lake Ossiach, the stone cross-vaulted ceiling a reminder that someone once hammered metal where the kitchen now stands. This is a regional seafood restaurant where a third-generation family chef cooks fish sourced from a responsible local aquaculture farm. The terrace faces the lake and the mountains, which is an unfair advantage over most dining rooms in the world.

  3. Rank 1. Winkler

    Austrian Seafood

A lakeside restaurant beside the Wallersee where the menu is built almost entirely around fish and snails, which is either an unusual pairing or the only honest pairing, depending on how you feel about freshwater Austria. Pike-perch, crayfish, mussels, and herb-dressed snails anchor the menu, with pastries doing reliable work at the end. The terrace in summer is the obvious move, but the interior holds its own with a maritime-themed fit-out that stops short of kitsch.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
