The Best American Food in Germany

The best American food in Germany, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide has weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Der Zauberlehrling comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Bad Hersfeld and Gengenbach.

More Less

Kesselhaus and Michels Stern hold the next two places.

  1. A walk-in glass wine cabinet greets you at the door, hinting at the 300-odd labels waiting inside. This is a Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant with a chic, minimalist interior and a set menu of up to seven courses built around contemporary, contrast-driven cooking. Service is polished without being stiff. Saturday nights flip to a themed menu, so check before you book and arrive expecting something different.

  2. Rank 1. Kesselhaus

    New American

A Michelin-starred creative restaurant inside a converted industrial building on a trading estate, which is either off-putting or part of the charm. The brick chimney, loft ceilings, and mullioned windows do most of the decorating, and the team serves a short, seasonal set menu where a handful of ingredients do all the work. The chefs bring some dishes out themselves, keeping the room looser than the starched tablecloth crowd might expect.

  6. Rank 4. Ponyhof Stammhaus by Tobias Wussler

    Modern American Steakhouse

The terrace fills up fast when the weather turns, which tells you something about how Gengenbach feels about this place. A long-standing family-run restaurant, Ponyhof Stammhaus runs a menu that moves comfortably between old-school classics and more contemporary plates, with charcoal-grilled steaks holding down the anchor. The room is the kind that makes you order one more glass without quite deciding to.

The red façade on Parkstraße is hard to miss, and the interior delivers on the promise: wooden tables, modern lines, and a warmth that feels earned rather than designed. This is a regional cooking restaurant in a small Baltic beach town, where the open kitchen turns out North German country food with occasional detours elsewhere. Set menus or à la carte, with fresh fish doing the quiet arguing for the whole operation.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
