The Best Seafood in Ireland

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best seafood in Ireland, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide and Eater have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Aldridge Lodge comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Carrick and Cork.

More Less

Goldie and Adrift hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Eater next.

  1. Down a country lane in rural Wexford, this cheerful restaurant earns its Michelin Bib Gourmand with a seafood menu that's practically a family operation: the chef's father fishes off Hook Head, the gardens out back supply the vegetables, and crab and lobster show up as a matter of course. The owners run the room with the kind of warmth that's hard to fake, and if you're staying over, the bedrooms come with hot water bottles and home-baked cookies.

  2. Rank 1. Goldie

    Seafood

The daily menu changes with whatever the West Cork boats bring in, and the kitchen runs a fin-to-gill policy that turns off-cuts into something worth fighting over. This compact, lively seafood spot on Oliver Plunkett Street earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand without the prices that usually follow that kind of attention. International touches keep the fish from feeling dutiful. Come early, come hungry, and prepare to be elbow-to-elbow with half of Cork doing the same.

  3. Rank 3. Adrift

    Seafood

The dining room sits on the ground floor of Dunmore House Hotel, and the windows line up almost perfectly with Clonakilty Bay. This is a seafood restaurant in the full coastal sense, with lobster pulled from nearby Galley Head waters and vegetables grown in the hotel's own organic kitchen garden. The cooking is unfussy and direct, which turns out to be the right call when the ingredients are making this much of an argument for themselves.

  4. A double-fronted Victorian house a short walk from the beach in a small Waterford seaside town, Beach House is a bistro where the menu is short and seafood does most of the talking. The fish and chips changes with the day's catch, which keeps things honest. The wine list dips into some older vintages, a pleasant surprise for a room this relaxed. Exactly the kind of place you'd drive an hour for and feel smug about afterwards.

  7. The fish tank behind the bar is your first clue, and the walls covered in nautical odds and ends are your second. This old-school pub in the coastal village of Liscannor has been in the same family forever, and the kitchen leans hard into whatever came off the boats nearby. Lunch is straightforward; dinner gets a little more ambitious. The Michelin Guide has had it on the radar for years.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
