The Best British Food in Ireland

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best British food in Ireland, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide and Eater have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Bastion comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Dublin and Abbeyleix.

More Less

Farmgate and Bramley hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Eater next.

  1. Rank 1. Bastion

    Modern British

Candles and a big central bar give this Michelin-starred Kinsale restaurant its low-key warmth, which suits the cooking well. The chef is Scottish-born but leans hard into Irish ingredients, with local seafood doing a lot of the heavy lifting. Dishes are precise without being fussy, and there's a playful streak running through them that keeps things from feeling overly serious. His wife runs the floor, so the whole operation has an intimacy that's hard to fake.

  2. A converted pub sitting in the shadow of Lismore Castle, Farmgate is the kind of unfussy Irish restaurant that makes you resent wherever you live. The menu runs to liver and bacon, braised lamb shank, and deep-fried calamari, all built around local produce and priced so reasonably you'll check the bill twice. Service is warm without being cloying. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  4. Rank 3. Delahunt

    British

What was once a Victorian grocer's clerk's snug is now a glass-enclosed private dining room, which tells you everything about this place's bones. Delahunt is a modern Irish restaurant on Camden Street with genuine atmosphere and cooking that leans hard on Irish produce. James Joyce namechecked the building in Ulysses, so the ghosts are literary ones. The Sitting Room upstairs handles drinks before or after.

  5. A former Victorian coaching inn in the Wicklow hills, refurbished into something you might call shabby-chic Irish country house, without any of the irony that phrase usually implies. The front bar still feels like a proper pub, but the airy dining room runs a menu that skips the theatrics in favor of straightforward cooking, local cod from the Irish Sea, beef cheeks in a bun where another kitchen would just do a burger.

  6. Exposed brickwork, old engravings, and worn wooden furniture set the scene at this long-standing Dublin pub that also does a serious sit-down meal. Two spacious dining rooms sit alongside a cosy bar, and the cooking runs to the sort of thing a pub should do well: rib-eye and chips, bread and butter pudding. The service is the kind that makes you feel remembered, even on a first visit.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
