The Best Irish Food in Ireland

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best Irish food in Ireland, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide and The 50 have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Homestead Cottage comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Dublin and Cashel.

More Less

Ballymaloe House and Chez Hans hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The 50 next.

  3. A converted 19th-century Synod Hall crouched under the Rock of Cashel is a pretty committed setting for a classic French-Irish restaurant, and Chez Hans has been here forever. The menu reads like a love letter to old-school cooking, sole meunière, proper puddings, the kind of thing people drive across Tipperary for. Staff who've worked here for years give the whole room the easy warmth of somewhere that has nothing left to prove.

  4. Neven Maguire's name is the reason people drive to a small town near the Irish border and don't complain about it. MacNean House is a formal restaurant with a tasting menu, plush dining room, and the kind of attentive service that suits an anniversary better than a Tuesday. The cooking leans on fine Irish produce and runs to real detail. A cookery school and rooms sit alongside it, should the journey feel too long to do in one day.

  5. Red leather banquettes and large murals fill what used to be a bank vault, giving this cellar restaurant a warm, members-club feel that the original architects certainly didn't intend. The cooking draws on Irish produce but wanders freely around the continent, landing somewhere between a French bistro and an Italian trattoria without committing to either, which turns out to suit it fine.

  6. A tall, narrow townhouse overlooking Trinity College Park, The Pig's Ear is a sit-down Irish restaurant where the menu reads like someone raided a grandmother's recipe tin and a history archive on the same afternoon. The chef digs into old-school Irish cooking without playing it safe, so boxty pancakes and suet puddings show up alongside lobster omelette. Comfort food, but with a raised eyebrow.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
