Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best restaurants in Houston, according to the experts: Michelin Guide, Food & Wine, and James Beard Awards have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Tatemó comes out on top.

More Less

BCN Taste & Tradition and Belly of the Beast hold the next two places. Houstonia shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Houston Chronicle next.

Departments

  1. The sign outside belongs to a doughnut shop, which tells you everything about the neighborhood and nothing about what's inside. Tatemó is a BYOB tasting menu built around heirloom corn from across Mexico, and it holds a Michelin star. The chef turns masa into something you'd describe to people for weeks: a black mole so dark it needs its own tortilla, made from nixtamalized plantain, to make the point land.

  2. A 1920s white stucco bungalow off Richmond Avenue, hung with Picasso owl jugs from the owner's private collection, is doing some of the more serious Spanish cooking in Houston. This is fine dining, so dress accordingly. The chef handles both seafood and roasted meats with the kind of confidence that makes everything feel inevitable rather than effortful. An all-Spanish wine list and a dedicated gin and tonic section round out the room. It holds a Michelin star.

  3. Half-corn, half-flour tortillas land warm at the table while the menu does what it wants, which turns out to be Mexican cooking with detours through saag paneer, nori, and agnolotti. This casual restaurant in Spring won the 2025 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Texas and holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, unlikely honors for a strip-mall dining room, but the food makes the argument without needing the room to help.

  4. Rank 2. March

    Mediterranean

The tasting menu here rotates through a single Mediterranean region at a time, from the Maghreb to Andalusia to Greece, so what you eat depends entirely on when you show up. It's a fine dining experience with a Michelin star and serious beverage program to match, starting with cocktails in the lounge before the main dining room takes over. The whole thing moves with a warmth that keeps the ambition from tipping into ceremony.

  5. Rank 2. Musaafer

    Indian

A Michelin-starred Indian fine-dining restaurant inside the Galleria mall, which is either a joke or a statement, and Musaafer is clearly the latter. The grand hall, with its arches, towering windows, and labyrinthine layout, feels more like a palace than a food court neighbor. The menu traces the chef's journey across India's states, so the range is wide and the spicing is careful. The Paan Negroni at the bar is a fine place to start.

  7. Sitting inside the Museum of Fine Arts, this French fine dining room earns its Michelin star on the strength of produce-driven cooking where the sauces do the heavy lifting and the plating looks borrowed from the galleries next door. The Cullen Sculpture Garden frames the windows after dark. The tasting menu shifts with the seasons, and the pommes dauphine with truffle aioli have no business being a side dish.

  8. The cheeseburger on a housemade English muffin has become something of a Houston landmark, but at this EaDo bistro the menu makes every decision feel equally consequential. Nancy's Hustle holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a James Beard semifinalist nod, and the cooking is seasonal and bold without being precious about it. The room stays packed and loud most nights, which somehow only adds to the fun.

  9. Rank 9. Maximo

    Texan Mexican

Burnt orange banquettes and handsome tile floors set the tone at this West University Texan-Mexican restaurant, where tortillas are nixtamalized and pressed in-house and the masa program is taken seriously. The menu runs from roasted oysters with green garlic butter to a smoked pork chop buried under spicy peanut macha. The chef holds a James Beard Emerging Chef award and a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which feels about right for a neighborhood spot this quietly confident.

  10. Thai hip-hop overhead and papaya salad that bites back even on medium spice sets the tone fast at this street food restaurant from James Beard Award-winning chef Benchawan Jabthong Painter. The menu pulls from across Thailand rather than settling into one region, so the pad see ew and house curries share the table with Northern Thai dishes her grandmother used to make. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks.

  12. A crawfish gumbo gravy poured over egg foo young tells you everything about this Asian American diner in Houston Heights. Named for the chef's parents, Agnes and Sherman blends Chinese and American comfort food into something scallion waffles and pandan French toast feel natural sitting on the same menu. The cocktail list leans equally sideways. A James Beard nominee for Best New Restaurant, and the room fills fast with people who figured that out early.

  13. Rank 12. Amrina

    Indian

The tandoori octopus with masala potato mash is a reasonable preview of where this modern Indian restaurant is headed. Chef Jassi Bindra, a Chopped champion, treats the menu as a place to be playful, moving from A5 wagyu skewers to quail biryani to a cocktail menu called "Drink My Dessert." The room sits in The Woodlands, polished and date-night ready, and the kitchen keeps pace with both the ambition and the occasion.

  14. Rank 12. Crawfish & Noodles

    Vietnamese Cajun & Creole

This is a Viet-Cajun crawfish house on Bellaire Boulevard, where you wear a bib and gloves big enough to look like a bit. The crawfish come boiled with lemongrass and ginger, and the turkey necks arrive pre-spiced. The room works like a sports bar that lost the plot, with the Astros on every TV and a Darth Vader helmet in the corner nobody will explain. It's casual, loud, and messy, and the check stays reasonable.

  15. Rank 12. Xochi

    Creative Oaxacan

Hugo Ortega's Oaxacan restaurant inside the Marriott Marquis is the kind of place that makes you think differently about mole, a sauce most people treat as a single thing rather than a whole universe. The kitchen explores that universe seriously, working through pipián, mole negro, and variations in between. A James Beard Outstanding Pastry Chef nominee rounds out a meal that doesn't skimp on the sweet end. The Sunday brunch draws a devoted crowd.

  16. Colorful walls hung with aso oke fabric and Nigerian celebration paintings set the mood before the food even arrives. ChòpnBlọk is a West African bowl-and-bites spot that grew from a food hall stall into a full-service restaurant, and the menu stayed short on purpose: a handful of bowls, salads, and snacks, plus frozen drinks that earn their place on the menu. The New York Times put it on their 2025 Restaurant List, which makes sense for a room this precise and this cheerful.

  17. A fast-casual stall inside Houston's The Post food hall, ChòpnBlọk is the chef Ope Amosu's case for West African cooking as everyday food, not occasion food. Jollof rice, coconut curry bowls, and grilled suya skewers dusted in yaji peanut spice anchor the menu. The Michelin Bib Gourmand and a spot on the New York Times Restaurant List followed, which is a lot of attention for a rice bowl, and not undeserved.

  18. Rank 17. Ishtia

    American

A smudge stick salad opens the meal, which tells you most of what you need to know about Ishtia's ambitions. This intimate tasting menu in Kemah builds a multicourse experience around Indigenous American ingredients and tradition, run by a chef who also operates a molecular gastronomy restaurant nearby, because apparently one mode of cooking wasn't enough. Seating is limited to Thursday through Saturday, so reservations are not optional.

  19. The original Chinatown location that started a Houston-wide Sichuan empire, this casual Chinese restaurant earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand for cooking that doesn't just drown everything in chili oil. The heat and tongue-numbing mala tingle are there, but measured, so you can taste the food between the fire. Portions run generous, and the classics like kung pao chicken and dan dan noodles give the menu its spine.

  20. A converted bungalow in Montrose hung with vinyl records, Nobie's is the kind of New American neighborhood restaurant that makes you feel vaguely guilty for not living closer. The menu runs from creative vegetable dishes to very serious pie, baked daily and non-negotiable. The staff treats everyone like a regular, which is either charming or slightly eerie depending on how you feel about warmth. A Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  21. Rank 21. Baso

    Live-Fire American

Concrete walls, moody lighting, and a hearth that glows through the open kitchen set the tone at this live-fire restaurant in the Heights. The menu pulls from everywhere, pairing live-fire technique with influences that drift across continents, and the whole thing is built for sharing. A James Beard Emerging Chef semifinalist runs the kitchen. Bring a group, order widely, and expect the bass to be louder than you planned for.

  22. A wedge-shaped fine dining room tucked off the highway near downtown Houston, Justin Yu's place seats you close enough to the counter that you'll feel like a regular by the end of the first course. The food is shareable contemporary cooking that looks simple and then isn't, seasoned with real intention. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, and it landed a James Beard semifinalist nod for Outstanding Hospitality, which tracks for a room this warm.

  23. Rank 23. Aga's

    Pan-Asian

A banquet hall moonlighting as a Pakistani-Indian restaurant, and the goat chops have made it to the New York Times. The dining room fills fast at lunch with big family-style spreads: kebabs, biryani, curries, and those charred chops that everyone orders. The service keeps pace even when the room is packed to the walls, which it usually is. Bullet naan seasoned with jalapeños and cilantro is a quiet reason to skip the rice entirely.

  24. Rank 23. Nam Giao

    Vietnamese

Steamed rice cakes topped with fried pork rinds arrive at nearly every table in this Little Saigon restaurant, and plenty of regulars stop right there and just keep ordering them. The kitchen specializes in the elegant cuisine of Hue, central Vietnam, and holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand. The server will warn you that you've ordered too much, which is your cue that the order is about right.

  25. Rank 23. Perseid

    French

Sunflower yellow walls and tall windows that pull in light from every direction set the tone at this French bistro inside Hotel Saint Augustine. Chef Aaron Bludorn's menu leans into Gulf Coast flavors alongside the classics, so foie gras arrives with biscuits and crawfish sausage gets a Creole sauce. Breakfast runs all week, the patio is spacious, and the servers seem to understand that ease is its own kind of luxury.

  28. Rank 28. Camaraderie

    French American

The salt-baked celery root arrives looking like a small geological event, which sets the tone for this French-influenced New American restaurant where technique is the point but the vibe stays loose. Chef Shawn Gawle, a James Beard semifinalist, built the menu around sharing, with tarte flambée, heirloom tomato pie, and carrot cavatelli doing the heavy lifting. Dressy enough to feel like an occasion, relaxed enough that nobody's whispering.

  29. Rank 28. Credence

    Contemporary American

Live fire anchors the open kitchen at this spacious Contemporary American restaurant, where Levi Goode channels five generations of Texas roots into a menu that swings from seafood towers to whole duck. The monkey bread served alongside the deviled crab is the kind of detail that makes a dish unforgettable. Ranch-inspired without being the least bit kitschy, it's the sort of place Houston does better than it gets credit for.

  31. A nondescript Katy strip mall is doing a lot of work here. Inside, the dining room runs to sleek fixtures and lazy susan-fitted private rooms, and the menu reads like a focused edit of Hong Kong classics rather than the usual encyclopedia. Congee, wonton soup, and candied walnut shrimp anchor things, with weekend seafood specials worth asking about. The Michelin Guide has it on their list, and the Houston Chronicle ranked it among the city's top restaurants.

The French cheeseburger blanketed in raclette has its own reputation in this city, which tells you something about the mood at this Heights neighborhood restaurant. European-inspired comfort food anchors the menu, which shifts with the seasons, running from chicken liver pate and crudo through to roast chicken and pasta. The chef landed a James Beard semifinalist nod in 2024, and the Houston Chronicle put Squable at number two on its top 100 list.

  35. The Ninfarita has been mixed the same way since the early 1970s, and Houston would riot if that changed. This Navigation Boulevard Tex-Mex institution is credited with bringing fajitas into the national conversation, a fact locals mention with the quiet pride of a sports championship. 36. The gumbo arrives with a crab claw jutting out of the bowl like it owns the place, surrounded by fat rounds of okra and a cloud of white rice. This Creole soul food cafe sits down the street from NASA, has signage that will not help you find it, and is on The New York Times Restaurant List. The fried catfish barely fits the plate, and the chef named the whole operation after his grandmothers, which tells you something about the cooking.

  37. Tortillas pressed from heirloom corn varieties anchor the menu at this lively Mexican restaurant tucked into a Woodlands strip mall. The chef, a James Beard semifinalist, grew up in Jalisco and cooks like it, with lamb shank slow-braised in agave leaf and a tableside al pastor that gets lit on fire, because apparently subtlety is optional. The crowd that fills this place on a Friday night suggests the mall address puts nobody off.

  38. Rank 39. Annam

    Contemporary Vietnamese

The dining room at this contemporary Vietnamese restaurant in Autry Park runs in cream and white, with booths wide enough to actually spread out. The menu threads French technique through Vietnamese cooking, and the portions are generous enough to make sharing feel less like a virtue and more like a strategy. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks with the pricing. Bring people you like.

  39. Rank 39. The Marigold Club

A player piano sets the tone at this Montrose dining room, where the dress code is "go ahead and try" and the menu leans toward Mayfair via Paris. The kitchen runs British-French, which means duck Wellington and oysters at the bar feel equally at home. The Marigold Club is the kind of place where ordering a martini first is not just acceptable but expected, and Esquire has already taken their side on the matter.

  40. Rank 41. da Gama Canteen

    Indian Portuguese

The menu at this casual Houston Heights spot traces the old Portuguese trading routes through Goa and East Africa, which makes for a sharper, stranger combination than the usual fusion pitch. Small plates move between Indian spicing and Portuguese technique without much fuss. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, and the custard tarts at the end make a convincing argument for the whole journey.

  43. Tortillas made on-site and griddled all day set the tone at this counter-service taqueria tucked into Finn Hall in downtown Houston. The chicharrón, cured pork belly with pumpkin seed vinaigrette and crispy shallots, is the kind of thing you think about later. Breakfast tacos and a cult carrot taco round out a menu that's more considered than the food-hall setting suggests. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks.

  44. Rank 41. Phat Eatery

    Malaysian

Flaky roti canai folded and crisped to order, torn apart and dragged through curry, is the move that explains Phat Eatery in a single gesture. This casual Malaysian street food spot in Katy draws a crowd happy to share plates of Hainanese chicken, beef rendang, and satay across a loud, affordable table. The chef was a James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Texas, which for a strip-mall canteen in the Houston suburbs is a sentence worth sitting with.

  46. A food truck parked across from West Alabama Ice House, which makes the move obvious: grab barbacoa or chicharron tacos here, then carry them next door to a picnic table with a cold beer. 47. Villa Arcos is a small red shack on Navigation in the East End that serves breakfast tacos wrapped in foil, the way nature and the neighborhood intended. The flour tortillas are soft and stuffed past reason, and you order a couple at the window for a few bucks. Politicians, construction crews, and recent Montrose arrivals all stand in the same line, which is about as bipartisan as Houston gets before 9 a.m.

  48. Rank 51. Candente

    Tex-Mex

The fajitas arrive on a sizzling cast-iron skillet, prime Niman Ranch beef with charred onions and tortillas made from brisket trimmings, which tells you everything about how this Tex-Mex restaurant operates. From the team behind the Pit Room next door, Candente is enormous, patio and all, and the kitchen swings for the scale. Weekend brunch turns into a full production. 49. Rank 51. Kiran's

    Contemporary Awadhi

Kiran Verma describes her fine dining restaurant as "Indian hospitality with French sophistication and American informality," which sounds like a manifesto until the papadum nachos arrive and you realize she means it. The kitchen draws from the slow-cooked Awadhi traditions of Northern India, folding them into a contemporary menu that includes an afternoon tea service. Verma was a James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Texas in 2023.

  50. Rank 53. Burger Bodega

This is a casual counter-service spot on Washington Avenue doing smashburgers with special sauce, loaded fries, and milkshakes in a room that leans into the gritty aesthetic of a New York bodega. The chopped cheese quietly competes with the burgers for most people's attention by the second visit.

  54. Rank 58. Gerardo's

    Mexican

A bleached cow skull in the parking lot tells you everything about Gerardo's Drive In, a weekend-only taqueria and meat market on the Northside that's been steaming barbacoa since the late '70s. You can sit down to a few tacos, buy meat by the pound, or take home an entire cow's head, which is a very specific kind of leftovers. It's casual, cheap, and made for people who plan their Saturdays around lunch.

  55. Laredo Taqueria is a no-frills counter-service taco spot where the steam table does the talking and the flour tortillas do the heavy lifting. Expect a line, and expect the regulars ahead of you to know their order cold, so use the wait to study the breakfast and lunch options. Ordering on corn is permitted, but you'll be skipping the thing that holds every breakfast taco here together. Cash-in-pocket prices, work-boots-to-business-casual crowd.

  56. Sylvia's is a relaxed, family-run Mexican restaurant on Woodway where the menu is basically one long argument about enchiladas, each named after a city in Mexico or Texas. They come under chili gravy, mole, or salsa verde, and the servers will happily bend the menu around you. The mini sampler lets you try several before committing, which is how regulars settled on their favorite. It was a James Beard semifinalist, Best Chef: Texas.

  57. Rank 58. Thiên Thanh

    Vietnamese

A cash-only Vietnamese lunch spot in a Bellaire Boulevard strip center that sets a giant pitcher of fish sauce on every table before you've said a word, which tells you what the afternoon holds. The specialty is bánh cuốn, soft rice paper crepes folded around mushrooms, grilled pork, and dried shrimp. You add the bean sprouts yourself and dunk accordingly. Bring bills, a loose waistband, and zero concern about your shirt.

  62. Tío Trompo is a counter-service taco joint near Buffalo Bayou Park, where the main entertainment is watching pork get shaved off a spinning trompo while you wait. The floral tablecloths add a note of grandmother's dining room to an otherwise no-frills operation. Order at the counter, go for the three-taco platter, and know that the breakfast tacos keep going all day, so nobody has to rush.

  63. Rank 68. Crawfish Cafe

    Cajun & Creole

Real butter and sugar go into the crawfish boil here, which tilts the whole thing sweeter than the standard Cajun approach. This Viet-Cajun seafood spot on Bellaire runs a long roster of sauces, from garlic butter to Thai basil, and lets you mix them into something entirely your own. The menu does what it promises and little else, which in this corner of Houston is plenty.

  65. Rank 72. Himalaya

    Pan-Asian

The Indian-spiced Southern fried chicken has drawn pilgrims to this Indo-Pakistani restaurant in Houston's Gandhi District for years, and chef Kaiser Lashkari keeps adding reasons to return. Pakistani pastrami, Indian quesadillas, Hyderabadi and Punjabi curries, Goan salmon, mango tres leches: the menu moves around the subcontinent without apology. Anthony Bourdain came through, which tracks. A James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Texas.

  76. Rank 82. El Hidalguense

    Hidalguense Mexican

The lamb goes into a pit lined with maguey leaves, comes out fall-off-the-bone tender, and lands on your table alongside consommé and a cactus salad. This casual Mexican restaurant on a resolutely unglamorous stretch of Long Point Road in Spring Branch specializes in the cooking of Hidalgo, which means the barbacoa de borrego is the thing to order. The New York Times put it on their 2023 Restaurant List, which is a long way to travel for a pit-smoked lamb, and not far enough.

  81. Salt-and-pepper fried chicken wings and wok-fried noodles are the draws at this casual Cantonese spot on the west side of Houston. It has been a neighborhood staple long enough that regulars tend to know what they're getting before they sit down. Save room for the Hong Kong milk tea and the deep-fried French toast, which arrives drowning in butter and condensed milk, which is exactly the kind of ending a meal like this deserves.

  87. A walk-up burger stand on Navigation that grew out of years of pop-ups, Boo's is the kind of place where the menu fits on a napkin and that's the whole point. The smashburger comes on a challah bun from Cake & Bacon, topped with shredded lettuce, tomato, shaved onion, and a smoky house sauce that regulars already treat as non-negotiable. Crispy fries, bottled sodas, and a colorful roadside aesthetic round it out.

  88. Rank 95. Chardon

    Modern French

The cheese trolley rolls whether you ordered it or not, which sets the tone for this French restaurant inside Houston's Thompson Hotel. The cooking is modern and refined, with Texas ingredients folded in quietly, Gulf shrimp here, pecan-muscadine gelée there. Small plates, proper entrées, theatrical desserts, the kind of room where the meal takes a while and nobody seems to mind.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
