The 83 Best Places to Eat and Drink in Milwaukee

Sections

Tap to add or drop a section. At least one stays on.

The best places to eat and drink in Milwaukee, according to the experts: USA Today, The New York Times, and James Beard Awards have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Birch comes out on top.

More Less

Bryant’s and Odd Duck Restaurant hold the next two places. OnMilwaukee shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Eater next.

A department belongs to one section, so choosing one narrows the list to it.

  1. Wood-firing and smoking do most of the heavy lifting at this fine dining spot on Milwaukee's east side, where the chef draws on Southern roots, time on the line at Gramercy Tavern, and a stretch in New Orleans to shape a menu that reads rustic but cooks with real precision. The New York Times put it on their Restaurant List, and the James Beard Foundation named the chef a semifinalist. The garlic focaccia and the charred beef tartare each make a convincing case on their own.

  2. Rank 1. Bryant’s

    Cocktail Bar

There's no menu at Bryant's, just a bartender who asks what you're in the mood for and then makes something better than you imagined. This Milwaukee cocktail lounge has been around forever, all dark wood, velvet booths, and Rat Pack lighting that flatters everyone equally. A 2025 James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Bar, though the room feels too cool to acknowledge it. Come dressed like you mean it.

  3. A small-plates restaurant in Walker's Point where the chile crisp deviled eggs tend to set the tone for the rest of the meal. The menu wanders from massaman curry to duck confit agnolotti without apology, and the cocktails are craft without being a whole thing about it. A portion of each featured drink goes to a rotating charity, which covers a lot of ground between Doctors Without Borders and the Wisconsin Waterfowl Association. A James Beard semifinalist, twice over.

  4. A four-course tasting menu in Bay View where the chef's Top Chef celebrity lands a little lighter than you'd expect. Dan Jacobs and Dan Van Rite run a focused, seasonal room, the kind where you follow the menu wherever it leads, from liver mousse and shrimp toast toward squash with red curry or something involving boudin blanc. A James Beard Nominee for Best Chef Midwest, the duo earns the room's easy trust.

  5. An old Schlitz tavern in Bay View that smells like someone's grandmother has been cooking since morning. This cash-only Serbian dinner spot runs on its own clock, which means a 45-minute wait is fairly standard and nobody seems to mind. Goulash, moussaka, chicken paprikash, and flaky böreks fill out a menu built for cold weather and real hunger. An old-school institution doing exactly what it has always done.

  6. Rank 6. Amilinda

    Mediterranean

A short, ever-changing menu of Spanish and Portuguese cooking in a cozy downtown dining room, where piri piri chicken gets finished with Wisconsin cheese without anyone apologizing for it. The chef is a James Beard Outstanding Chef semifinalist, and the kitchen takes dessert as seriously as the savory courses, which not every serious restaurant bothers to do. The kind of place where you eat things you won't find anywhere else in the city.

  7. Rank 6. Lupi & Iris

    Mediterranean

The wood-fired octopus and French-Italian Riviera menu signal the ambitions clearly: this is fine dining, downtown Milwaukee, with tablecloths to match. Adam Siegel, who holds a James Beard Best Chef Midwest award for earlier work, shapes a kitchen that leans toward the sun-drenched coast without ever feeling like a theme. A James Beard nominee for Best New Restaurant, it draws the kind of crowd that books ahead and doesn't check the prices twice.

  8. The Diplomac, a chef-ified riff on a Big Mac, says more about this East Side restaurant than any press clipping could. Dane Baldwin, who holds a James Beard Award for Best Chef Midwest, runs a room that somehow keeps duck breast and deviled eggs on equal footing, classy enough for a date night but relaxed enough that nobody feels like they wandered in by mistake. Brady Street is lucky to have it back.

  11. Part coffee shop, part neighborhood bottle shop, part full kitchen, Story Hill BKC somehow makes all three feel inevitable under one roof. The team behind Maxie's and Blue's Egg runs this cozy Bluemound Road spot, where the warm wood interior and genuinely unhurried hospitality do as much work as the menu. A James Beard Outstanding Restaurateur semifinalist, the group has a long track record of comfort food that earns the label.

  12. Every cocktail on the menu comes in a spirited or spirit-free version, which sounds like a gimmick until you're sipping something smoky and elaborate at midnight with nothing to dread by morning. This plush cocktail lounge inside the Dubbel Dutch Hotel leans into big ice, smoked drinks, and deadpan drink names, "garnished with disaster" being an actual garnish note. A James Beard nominee for Best New Bar in 2025.

  14. The menu changes constantly, so on any given night dinner at this neighborhood restaurant might land on Filipino braised pork, lamb biryani, or smoked chicken pappardelle. Beyond the dining room, the team runs cooking classes, farm dinners, and a grocery program, which gives the place a slightly utopian community-hub energy. The focaccia with whipped garlic butter has a reputation that precedes it, which tells you something about the level of care going into everything else.

  15. Rank 17. La Dama

    Mexican

The menu at this Mexican restaurant changes constantly, which is either the chef's restlessness or a sign that he has a lot to say. Emanuel Corona draws on Puebla, Mexico City, and Oaxaca for cooking that moves between tlayudas and chiles rellenos, beef cheek barbacoa and lamb birria. The room on South Second Street carries the quiet weight of a place that has meant something to this neighborhood for a long time, under more than one name.

  17. The pastrami chop cheese bagel sandwich with sport peppers, provolone, and a house special sauce is the kind of thing you think about on the drive home. This Walker's Point corner bagel shop goes well beyond schmears, running latkes, lox, matzo ball soup, and fried spiced sugar bagels through a menu that feels more like a deli daydream than a quick stop. Casual, counter-service, and busy on weekends.

  18. French classics served in a dining room that looks out over Lake Michigan, with escargot, foie gras, and steak frites on a menu that hasn't chased any trends and isn't embarrassed about it. Lake Park Bistro is the kind of formal French restaurant Milwaukee keeps in its back pocket for anniversaries and quiet celebrations, where the room does a lot of the heavy lifting and the kitchen handles the rest.

  20. The 900-degree wood-burning oven came all the way from central Maine, which tells you something about priorities. This woman- and LGBTQ-owned pizza operation splits its time between a West Allis takeaway spot and a roving life of pop-ups, beer gardens, and farm nights. Hot honey from their own bees goes on the cup-and-char pepperoni; Detroit-style pies come out with scorched edges and racing stripes of sauce.

  21. Rank 20. Momo Mee

    Sichuan

The xiao long bao arrive as tightly pleated, hand-folded pouches that release a rush of pork broth the moment you bite in. This is a casual noodle and dumpling shop where Sichuan heat is the organizing principle, landing not just on the tongue but behind the eyes. The chile oil wontons and dry-rubbed wings deliver real numbness, the satisfying kind you talk about afterward. Ramen and other noodles round things out, though the spice-forward dishes are what most people can't stop thinking about.

  22. A Forno Bravo dome oven running around 700 degrees is the whole argument here. Wy'east is a pizza shop in Washington Heights where the chef came up under Portland's Apizza Scholls and brought long-fermented, natural-ingredient pies to Milwaukee. The char comes in four shades of brown, the sag is minimal, and the cheese-to-topping ratio gets the kind of attention most people reserve for something important.

  24. Flattop smoke hits you before you find a seat at this narrow Walker's Point bar, where the beer list is serious and the food is unabashedly Wisconsin. Nashville chicken, rotating pierogies, and wings with more sauce options than you need anchor a menu of pub grub that's been fussed over just enough. The burger, a sloppy, oniony, American cheese situation on brioche, is the kind of thing you think about on the drive home.

  25. A southside corner bar where the game is always on and the regulars have claimed their stools for life. The tiny flattop behind the bar turns out chicken wings done the Milwaukee way: fried, sauced, then grilled, so you get char and caramelization and a vinegar bite all at once. It's a rougher room than the Bay View scene around it, which is exactly the point.

  26. Rank 31. El Tsunami

    Taqueria

The salted mugs for micheladas arrive frosty enough to fog, which tells you something about the priorities at this Mexican taqueria and seafood spot with a few Milwaukee locations. Shrimp comes in a chalice-sized portion, tacos al carbon carry that backyard-grill smoke, and the housemade chorizo leans hard into its smoke too. The verde salsa is the kind of thing you want to sneak home in a cup.

  27. Brady Street's old-school Italian grocery moved across the street a few years back into a space bright enough to make you squint, but the pantry staples, the olives, and the deli counter came along for the ride. Stock up on guanciale and giardiniera, or skip straight to the sandwiches. The Human Torch, loaded with calabrese salami, capocollo, and hot pepper spread, takes its name seriously.

  28. The frozen custard is the name on the sign, but the jumbo burgers are the reason regulars make the drive to the suburbs. This is a classic drive-in counter spot: charry-edged patties on soft starchy buns, draped in melty processed cheese, with a toppings menu that quietly doubles as a personality test. The custard handles dessert. The go-to move, per local consensus, is eating all of it in the car.

  29. Rank 31. La Merenda

    Tapas Bar

Colombian empanadas next to lamb Bolognese next to butter chicken, and somehow none of it fights. La Merenda was doing international small plates in Walker's Point before the neighborhood caught up, and the reservations-required dining room still draws the crowd that doesn't need a theme explained to them. The goat cheese curds in chorizo cream sauce over crostini is the kind of thing that makes the eclectic menu feel less like a concept and more like a good idea.

  31. The trompo here gets more local fanfare than most politicians, and for good reason: al pastor is the gravitational center of this Oaxacan taqueria on National Avenue, Milwaukee's first sit-down location from a south-side truck fleet that's grown into something of a mini empire. The menu sprawls into tlayudas, birria de chivo, volcánes, and mulitas, with aguas frescas to cool things down after the fiery red salsa does its work.

  32. A stone oven dominates the floor of what was once a fast-food shell on Milwaukee's south side, turning out taboon bread and stuffed fatayer at a pace that explains the "bakery" in the name. The Jordanian and Palestinian menu runs wider than that, though: hummus, baba ghanoush, kebabs, eggs, fried cheeses, Turkish coffee. Elaborate rugs and ornate lamps make the room feel nothing like its previous life.

  33. Rank 31. The Vanguard

    Modern American

A sausage bar where the cocktails come on draft and the burger is made with a Velveeta-sauced sausage patty, which tells you everything about the philosophy here. The Vanguard is a laid-back Milwaukee watering hole built around an uncommonly serious sausage program, brats and poutine and fried curds all sharing the menu with Midwestern beers and house cocktails. The crowd is here to eat well without taking any of it too seriously, which is a harder trick than it looks.

  34. Third Space is a brewery and taproom in the Menomonee Valley, parked alongside a river and a set of train tracks in a way that feels more discovered than designed. The indoor-outdoor space fills up with live music and food trucks on good nights, and their hoppy, hazy ales show up on taps all over Milwaukee. Happy Place, the sessionable flagship, is the one you'll see everywhere and order without looking at the menu.

  35. A pour-your-own beer wall sets the tone at this food hall carved out of a former downtown mall. Peruvian chicken, arepas, pho, ramen, tortas, and pizza share the floor with cornhole and shuffleboard, so the crowd skews toward groups who can't agree on dinner, which turns out to be a fine reason to visit. Dairyland anchors the whole thing with cheese curds, frozen custard, and an old-fashioned burger that needs no introduction.

  36. Laotian noodle house on National Avenue, a stretch of Silver City where you can eat Thai, Mexican, and Puerto Rican within a few blocks and never double back. The menu runs from turmeric-spiced crepes and fried quail to beef soup with tripe and spicy larb, the kind of sinus-clearing food that manages to feel comforting anyway. Whatever you order, ask for the house "steak sauce," a funky, garlicky, chile-flecked condiment that regulars treat as non-negotiable.

  37. Rank 31. Zaffiro’s Pizza & Bar

    Midwestern American Pizzeria

The wafer-thin crust crackles and snaps under toppings loaded on with no apologies, and the fennel sausage quietly reminds you this used to be Milwaukee's Italian quarter. Zaffiro's is a tavern-style pizza bar that has been doing this for what feels like forever, red-checkered tablecloths and Blatz on tap and all. Circle pie, square cut, built to be eaten beside strangers under neon light.

  38. Rank 31. Zarletti

    Italian

Zarletti was here before Milwaukee Street figured out it was fancy, and it's been quietly setting the standard ever since. This is a proper Italian restaurant, the kind where the pasta is house-made and the osso buco arrives without apology. The room runs warm and the service is polished without being precious, which is harder to pull off than it sounds in a neighborhood that now has valet parking.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
