The 100 Best Bagel Shops in the World

A short list, fiercely argued: the bagel shops the critics and guides have named, ranked by the honors behind them.

Eat, change section
  1. Rank 1. Starship Bagel

    NY-Style Bakery

The bagels here are kettle-boiled and hand-rolled, and the owner once won New York's Bagelfest twice, which is its own kind of declaration. This is a counter-order bagel shop with a line out the door and spreads that work for both the plain-schmear traditionalist and whoever orders the avocado toast-but-make-it-a-bagel sandwich. A James Beard nominee two years running, and on Eater's Dallas essentials list. Get there early, or just accept the wait.

  2. Rank 2. Starship Bagel

    NY-Style Bakery

  3. The smoked fish counter on Orchard Street has been an institution since forever, and Russ & Daughters is the appetizing shop New York trots out whenever it needs to prove a point. White-jacketed servers, a pristine deli case, egg creams, bagels, and Scottish salmon done multiple ways. The Michelin Bib Gourmand nod keeps it honest: the food is the whole point, and the regulars at the counter have known that for years.

  4. Rank 4. El Bagel

    Bakery

El Bagel is a Biscayne Boulevard bagel shop where the line out the door is part of the architecture. The bagels come out blistered and bubbly on the crust, then get stuffed and wrapped tight in parchment, which is how a Miami bagel ends up with guava in it. Bon Appétit once declared these among the very best in the country, outside New York, a distinction New Yorkers will note and then ignore.

  5. A bagel shop in Temescal that quietly reframes the whole New York-versus-everywhere-else argument by not entering it. Poppy turns out the classics, lox, whitefish, schmears of every persuasion, but the open-face seasonal veg sandwich is the point: California produce stacked on a proper bagel, finished with salsa macha for heat. Bon Appétit named it among the very best bagels in the country, New York included.

  6. Every bagel here comes out hot, and that's non-negotiable. This Greenwich Village bagel shop forgoes the plastic knife entirely: you rip, you dip into one of several cream cheeses pulled straight from the fridge, and that's the deal. The bagels run smaller and darker than the New York standard, which will either bother you or convert you. The New York Times and Eater have both put it on their short lists, so the line is rarely short.

  9. Rank 8. Bagelfeld's

    NY-Style Bakery

The bagels sell out most mornings, which tells you most of what you need to know. This East Thomas bagel shop turns out hand-rolled New York-style rounds with a crackly crust and a properly chewy pull, and the everything and jalapeño cheddar have built a quiet cult following across Phoenix. Bon Appétit named it among the top bagels in the country outside New York. Set your alarm, or find them at a handful of local cafes if you sleep in.

  11. This is the Vegas branch of a New York all-day cafe, a sunny, Tiffany-blue dining room beside the Bellagio's botanical gardens where bagels arrive stacked in three-tier towers. It's fancy for a place that mostly sells eggs and fish salad, so the Strip's fully rested and the freshly regretful sit side by side over grapefruit cocktails. Grab a sticky bun from the cart up front on your way out.

  12. Bagels hang in metal racks draped with white sheets, a nod to the coin-operated laundry this place used to be. Now it's an all-day pizza and bagel shop on Balboa, mornings given over to coffee from Grand Coffee and a solid bagel lineup that runs from egg to rye, with schmears folded through green onion or spiked with Calabrian chiles. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the top bagels in the Bay Area, and a Top 100 restaurant pick followed.

  21. Rank 29. Bagel Pub

    NY-Style Bakery

Stainless steel baskets lined with egg everything and pumpernickel everything tell you all you need to know before you've even ordered. This Crown Heights bagel shop turns out chewy, substantial rounds that hold up to the ambitious sandwich menu, where chipotle-bacon cream cheese and asparagus on a breakfast sandwich feel less weird than they should. The weekend line goes out the door, which at a bagel shop is either a warning or a recommendation, depending on how much you've had to eat.

  22. Some of the bagels here are so large they've lost their holes entirely, which feels like a metaphor for Midtown but is actually just breakfast. This no-frills bagel shop near Penn Station runs like a commuter train that actually shows up: the line moves, the bagels come out hot, and the chewy, twisty exterior is what you came for. The New York Times named it among the city's best, and the 8 a.m. crowd would agree without looking up.

  23. The salmon here gets cured and smoked in-house, which tells you most of what you need to know about how seriously this bagel shop takes itself. Schlok's sits just off the Panhandle, turning out traditional malty bagels with a thin, crisp crust and a caper schmear that leans hard into brine. Co-founded by a chef with Michelin-starred kitchen time, it punches well above the cream-cheese-from-a-tub competition.

  24. The mission here is explicit: no rainbow bagels, no blueberry bagels, no what Peter Shelsky calls the "shiksa bagel." This Park Slope bagel shop makes small, crust-forward rounds in the New York tradition, though the Sichuan peppercorn bagel, a nod to the long Jewish-Chinese-food alliance, bends the rules just enough. The New York Times named it among the city's best, which is the only endorsement that really matters in this particular argument.

  37. The pastrami chop cheese bagel sandwich with sport peppers, provolone, and a house special sauce is the kind of thing you think about on the drive home. This Walker's Point corner bagel shop goes well beyond schmears, running latkes, lox, matzo ball soup, and fried spiced sugar bagels through a menu that feels more like a deli daydream than a quick stop. Casual, counter-service, and busy on weekends.

  42. Rank 49. Wheated

    Pizzeria

The New Haven-style pies here are cooked to a serious crunch, with dough pressed thinner than the Connecticut purists would sanction and a tangy, oregano-heavy tomato sauce that makes a decent argument for staying in Brooklyn. Wheated is a Ditmas Park pizzeria with a full bar that also does bagels, so the menu has range. The New York Times put it on their best pizza in New York list, which is the kind of thing that fills a neighborhood spot fast.

  44. Bagels arrive stacked on wooden dowels here, which tells you most of what you need to know about the vibe. This is Major Food Group's theatrical, not-quite-kosher take on a Jewish appetizing shop in Soho, where seed-crusted bagels anchor spreads of lox, sable, and sturgeon, and there's a full caviar section for when a schmear feels insufficiently dramatic. Budget accordingly; this crowd did not come to save money.

  61. The sourdough starter for the bagels here is fed with imported Brooklyn water, a detail that tells you exactly where this deli-bar's loyalties lie. Grossman's is a relaxed Jewish-style deli and cocktail bar in Santa Rosa, turning out knishes, latkes, and chopped liver in a corner of California that doesn't see nearly enough of them. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the best restaurants in Sonoma County and called its bagels the best in the Bay Area.

  68. Rank 95. Boichik Bagels

    Bagel Shop

The line outside this Berkeley bagel shop has been there since day one and shows no sign of leaving. Boichik turns out chubby, chewy, malty New York-style bagels, kosher and done traditionally: salt bagels heavy with big sea-salt flakes, pumpernickel baked nearly chocolate-dark. The San Francisco Chronicle named them the Bay Area's best. Cream cheese runs from plain whipped to Hatch chile, and the house-made whitefish salad sandwich makes a strong case for staying.

  69. Rank 95. Hella Bagels

    NY-Style Bakery

A bagel shop that graduated from popup to a proper Albany storefront, Hella Bagels turns out rounds with the kind of chew that makes you feel like your jaw is doing something worthwhile. The patio, ringed in beige and rust tones that happen to match the bagels, is a nice place to work through a sandwich. The San Francisco Chronicle named them the Bay Area's best.

  70. Rank 95. The Bagel Mill

    Bagel Shop

The bagels here start as whole wheat grain, stone-milled on-site before the dough even exists. This Petaluma bagel shop runs a 36-hour process using sourdough starter, so the finished product lands somewhere between New York tradition and Northern California obsession. Toppings skew local and organic, and the menu stretches from classic to pesto and pizza. The San Francisco Chronicle named it the Bay Area's best.

  72. A bagel shop and deli in suburban Des Moines with a New York fixation, right down to sandwiches named for boroughs and landmarks. The bagels and bialys are baked in-house, the cream cheeses come blended with things like Sriracha and bacon, and the Bronx, a BLT with Sriracha cream cheese and banana peppers, suggests the kitchen isn't playing it safe. Espresso drinks and fresh-squeezed juices round it out for the morning crowd.

  73. Despite the name, there is no museum and London is not involved, but the bagels are fresh and the cream cheese menu runs to more than a dozen spreads. This Seoul bagel shop went from a single spot to four locations on the strength of flavors like truffle and potato with cheese, plus sandwiches worth the detour. The Union Jack garlands and royal portraits lean hard into the bit. Expect a line; this place draws them reliably.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
