The Best Places in Mile End

  1. An eight-seat omakase counter in Mile End where the rice alone could start a conversation: pesticide-free, cooked in a cast-iron pot, seasoned to match the fat content of whichever fish comes next. The edomae technique here runs to careful aging and marinating, with fish flown in from Japan several times a week alongside Quebec lobster and Magdalen Islands scallops. The minimalist room doubles as a ceramics gallery. Michelin one-star.

  2. Bone marrow crumpets are a reasonable thing to serve in Montreal if you're a British chef cooking from a tasting menu in a cozy Plateau room. Marc Cohen sources much of his meat from his own nearby butcher shop, and the seasonal menu moves at a pace that makes the whole meal feel considered rather than rushed. The wine list leans toward lesser-known labels, which is either adventurous or a little homework, depending on your mood.

  3. An old-school institution on Avenue Laurier where the service is formal enough that you'll sit up a little straighter without quite knowing why. This French tasting restaurant offers both a multi-course menu and à la carte, so you're not locked into an evening-length commitment. The kitchen treats fine ingredients with a light hand, and the wine list has some genuinely adventurous choices tucked in among the classics.

  4. The white shirts and black aprons are not an affectation; the staff here dress like Parisian servers because the whole point is a Parisian brasserie, transplanted to Outremont and running the same menu it has for years. Braised beef cheek, boudin noir, rum baba: the classics, done straight. The arched brick windows flood the room with light at lunch and turn it into a glowing fishbowl after dark. The wine list leans Burgundy and Rhône.

  5. Rank 6. Oncle Lee

    Contemporary Chinese

A slim, stylish contemporary Chinese restaurant on Laurier where the menu quietly mixes Montreal sensibility into familiar staples. Sesame noodles and garlic fried rice get the same serious attention as steamed oysters with fermented black bean sauce or beef tartare spiked with doubanjiang. The cocktails follow the same logic, which is either reassuring or alarming depending on how adventurous you're feeling. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

  6. Old painted panelling and varnished floorboards give this Mile End bistro the feel of a Paris side street that took a wrong turn and ended up somewhere more interesting. The chef runs a carte blanche menu each evening, which in practice means a shifting parade of influences that refuses to settle on one continent. The namesake dessert, a riff on the classic floating island, shows up eventually, but by then you've already forgotten to expect it.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
