The best Mexican food in Orlando, according to the experts: the James Beard Awards, Time Out, and Eater have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Reyes Mezcaleria comes out on top.

More Less

Black Rooster Taqueria and June hold the next two places. Eater shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with the Michelin Guide next.

  1. The bar stocks around 150 agave spirits, which tells you something about where the priorities lie at this NoDo Mexican restaurant. The interior channels Tulum and Quintana Roo in a way that makes you want to stay for another mezcal cocktail. The kitchen works through Mexico's regional traditions, from Veracruz to the coasts, and the chapulines, tiny fried grasshoppers seasoned with tamarind and chili, are offered completely without apology.

  2. A black rooster mural anchors the wall of this compact, industrial taqueria on Mills Avenue, where the chef built some of the furniture himself. The ethos is farm-to-taco, which sounds like a bumper sticker until you taste it. Slow-roasted pork, smoked greens with ricotta and shiitake, pickled onions that actually pucker: the menu reads eclectic and delivers on it. A Michelin Selected pick that draws vegetarians and carnivores into the same colorful booths.

  3. Rank 3. June

    Creative Mexican

The crab tostadas, rich and buttery, are a reasonable argument for ordering nothing else, though the tamale dumplings with rock shrimp and pasilla chili will make you question that plan. This contemporary Mexican restaurant in Thornton Park leans into wood-fired cooking and a sharing-plates format, so bring people you like. The room could pass for Mexico City: neutral tones, warm wood, the occasional pop of color, and a cocktail list that keeps pace with the food.

    The awards

  4. Tortillas pressed from imported blue Oaxacan corn are the foundation at this Winter Park taco shop, where the kitchen fries in beef tallow and avocado oil. The menu runs toward veal cheeks and chorizo-and-potato fillings, the kind of combinations that suggest the team grew up eating this food, not just studying it. Eater named it among Orlando's 38 best restaurants, and the regulars who show up on a Tuesday seem to already know that.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
