  2. The Packard Building has been around forever, and Morris Adjmi Architects, the firm behind the Wythe in Williamsburg, converted two of its floors into an apartment hotel steps from City Hall. Rooms feel like a borrowed pied-à-terre rather than a standard hotel stay, with residential-grade kitchens and enough design detail to make you forget you're paying by the night. The Michelin Guide has it on their selected hotels list.

    The awards

  3. Rank 91. Sally

    Pizzeria

Wood-fired, naturally leavened sourdough pies in a snug Spruce Street spot where a heart-shaped lamp hangs overhead and wine bottles line the windows. Sally is a neighborhood pizza parlor that pulls in families, couples, and the natural-wine crowd in roughly equal measure. The thin crust holds its crispness under a full load of toppings, which in Philadelphia, where pizza opinions run deep, is not a small claim. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand.

  4. High ceilings, detailed molding, and hardwood floors survived a careful restoration at this grand old Center City hotel, where 184 rooms split between two moods: deep charcoal walls with four-poster beds for the dramatic, white paneling for the sensible. Brass sconces and velvet bolster pillows in olive or rust appear throughout. City Hall sits right outside on Broad Street, and the six-story Conservatory lounge gives everyone somewhere to land after a long day of feeling historic.

  5. The awards

  6. A skyscraper hotel steps from City Hall, the W Philadelphia plays against type: the usual brand theatrics are dialed back in favor of something more sober and grown-up, without losing the style. Public spaces run to a swanky lounge, a rooftop bar, and a modern Italian restaurant evoking Sixties Rome. For a W, surprisingly easy to take seriously.

    The awards

  7. Thirteen rooms tucked into a pair of former South Street rowhouses, Yowie is a boutique hotel from a designer who spent years at Ralph Lauren before coming home to Philadelphia. The brick exterior is classic Queen Village, but inside it runs minimalist and colorful, full of the same eye that built her homewares shop downstairs. There's no front desk, just a self-check-in that feels less like hospitality protocol and more like borrowing a very stylish friend's apartment.

    The awards

  8. Rank 108. Down North Pizza

    Detroit-Style Pizzeria

  9. Lokal Fishtown lands somewhere between boutique hotel and vacation rental, which is exactly the pitch. The loft-style apartments run modernist but unpretentious, with hotel bathrooms, apartment kitchens, a cocktail kit stocked and ready, and a curated list of delivery apps for when you can't decide. One unit has garden access, another a deep soaking tub. Fishtown being Fishtown, the bars and restaurants just outside make staying in feel almost wasteful.

    The awards

  10. Rooms named Ben and Betsy, after the neighbors who made this street famous, set the tone at this low-touch, apartment-style hotel in Old City. No front desk fuss, just an iPad stocked with neighborhood intel and urban-loft interiors with contemporary furniture. It's the kind of place that assumes you'd rather feel like a resident than a guest, which, on one of Philadelphia's most historically loaded blocks, is not a bad assumption.

    The awards

  11. The awards

  12. The four rooms above Wm. Mulherin's Sons sit inside a former whiskey-bottling plant in Fishtown, which tells you something about the neighborhood's trajectory. This is a boutique hotel in the loosest sense, a handful of rooms rather than a property, and the draw is as much the wood-fired Italian restaurant downstairs as anything happening on your floor. Pack light and eat well.

    The awards

  13. Purple walls, tatami tables on one side, and a menu that has no interest in what everyone else is doing right now. Roxanne is a small creative restaurant in South Philly where the chef named the place after her mother and mostly just wants to cook. The dishes are few and the seasoning is confident, duck arriving with a wedge of Stilton as if that were always the plan. It probably was.

    The awards

  14. Rank 115. Southwark

    Italian Mediterranean

Botanical prints on pale walls, a red brick patio out back, and an Italian Mediterranean restaurant that treats a seasonal wine list as seriously as the kitchen treats pasta. The bucatini and the clams suggest the Mediterranean mindset is more than decorative. Queen Village locals who know their way around a wine list fill the bar up front while the dining room stays unhurried.

  18. Rank 118. Bricco Coal Fired Pizza

    Coal-fired Pizzeria

The coal-fired oven sits at the center of the room like the point it's trying to make, and the point is a New York-style pie with deep Italian roots cooked the way early immigrants did it, because wood was too expensive. This is a comfortable, full-service pizza spot with appetizers, a solid wine list, and a menu that ranges well past margherita territory. Ranked 31st on 50 Top Pizza USA.

  19. An old tavern in Bucks County farm country, about an hour from Philadelphia, that has been turned into a boutique hotel without being stripped of its bones. The building has been around forever, and the team has leaned into that with a modern-retro style that's theatrical without tipping into theme park. Good for a weekend when the city stops making sense and you need a road that narrows before it gets quiet.

  23. Rank 123. Fork

    New American

The kind of New American restaurant where your water glass refills before you notice it's low and plates disappear at exactly the right moment. The executive chef, who came up through Noma and Vernick, brings a menu worth slowing down for in a dining room that rewards lingering. Old City has plenty of options, but few rooms where the service feels this quietly choreographed.

  25. Marc Vetri is a name Philadelphians say with some reverence, and this casual pizza spot carries the family flag across a few Pennsylvania locations. The wood-fired pies come round or by the meter, with a dough that stays light without making a fuss about it. The menu runs from straight Italian classics toward a few fusion detours, and the salads are more interesting than they have any obligation to be. A pizza kit to take home rounds things out nicely.

  26. Rank 123. South

    Southern

  27. Tastykake wrappers, scrapple company pennants, and Philly sports ephemera cover every wall at this Fishtown diner, where the decorating philosophy appears to be "yes, and." Omelets come loaded with local kielbasa sourced from an old-school Port Richmond butcher, hash browns arrive properly shattered on the outside, and the scrapple takes a left turn with spicy whitefish and pickled peppers. Daytime only, cheerful, and very much a neighborhood fixture.

  28. Tesiny is a small raw bar and charcoal grill on a South Philly block of old-school institutions, a short walk from an abandoned garage, which is not the setting oysters usually ask for. Inside, velvet chairs and late-90s R&B give it the feel of a very good bar mitzvah afterparty. Stop in for a drink and a snack or stay for dinner, though expect a sit-down price, not a counter-service one.

  29. Rank 123. The Bakery

    Pizzeria

Six days a week it's a neighborhood bakery slinging coffee and doughnuts in South Philly. On Friday nights, The Bakery quietly pivots to "secret dinners," turning out a short, rotating menu of tall, square pizzas on soft, airy dough with a crackery undercarriage. Seats are few, the menu changes, and the whole operation feels more like eating at a friend's place than a restaurant. Arrive early, or just arrive flexible.

  30. Blue Corn is a casual Mexican spot in the Italian Market where the tortillas and both table salsas are made in-house, which is more effort than most places put into a free bowl of anything. The room is strung with so much festive decor that you'll wonder which holiday you missed, and the margaritas are strong enough to make you stop asking. Expect an easy dinner, jeans welcome, and a spot on The Infatuation's list of Philadelphia's top restaurants.

  31. Rank 133. Cafe Nhan

    Vietnamese

Chefs eating on their days off tend to be a reliable signal, and on Mondays and Tuesdays the counter at this compact Vietnamese restaurant on Passyunk fills with exactly that crowd. The kitchen is built around fragrant pho and bún bò Huế, the spicy lemongrass soup from the owner's hometown of Huế. Her son now runs the room alongside her, and his chicken wings have quietly become a reason to visit on their own.

  32. Rank 133. Chibanos

    Cuban Deli

Chibanos is a casual sandwich shop in Washington Square West where Cuban and Chinese cooking share a single piece of toasted pan cubano. Char siu pork goes between the bread, and breakfast versions ride on soft bolo baos. The yuca fries and Chinese sausage croquetas are there if you want a side, and the jasmine flan closes things out. Order at the counter, then settle in at a table inside or out, where half the neighborhood seems to be doing the same. The Infatuation put it at number 25 on its list of Philadelphia's best restaurants.

  35. Rank 133. Emilia

    Italian

Porchetta ribs and bucatini all'Amatriciana anchor the menu at this Italian restaurant on Frankford Avenue, where Greg Vernick stepped outside his usual lane to cook regional Italian for the first time. The room runs buzzy and packed, the service is tight, and the wine list leans Italian by the glass. It's a genuinely sexy room to land in Kensington, and the seasonal menu follows Italian tradition closely enough to feel considered without feeling like a museum piece.

  49. Rank 162. June BYOB

    French

The duck press arrives tableside in full theatrical flame, which tells you most of what you need to know about this petite French bistro in Collingswood. Beef Wellington and escargot anchor the classics end, but the seasonal menu is where the kitchen quietly does its most interesting work, cycling through dishes that disappear when the produce does. Bring your own bottle and a reason to linger.

  51. The baristas here treat coffee sourcing the way a sommelier treats a wine list, asking what you're in the mood for, floral or fruity, bright or nutty, and steering you toward something you wouldn't have ordered on your own. This sunny corner coffee shop in Philadelphia is genuinely tiny, and weekend lines of pourover devotees stretch down the block. The za'atar croissants disappear early, so arriving with time to spare is less advice than strategy.

  56. Rank 172. Corio

    Pizzeria

Hazelnut pesto on pizza is either a bold move or a disaster, and the Vernick alums behind this casual pizza and pasta spot in University City have clearly decided it's the former. The pies get the headlines, but the pastas and meaty mains pull equal weight. Two Locals beer is on tap next door, the crowd skews young, and the whole thing has the easy energy of a neighborhood spot that hasn't yet been ruined by its own reputation.

  61. Rank 172. TingTing’s

    Cantonese Café

A Hong Kong-style all-day cafe where five-spice wings, barbecued unagi over scrambled eggs, Portuguese custard tarts, and clam chowder share a menu without anyone blinking. TingTing's, from the team behind EMei, is small, crowded, and BYO, which covers the essentials. The menu sprawls in the way those old Hong Kong cafes do, where Western comfort food and Cantonese staples occupy the same laminated page and somehow coexist peacefully.

  64. Nick Elmi's neighborhood American restaurant in Bala Cynwyd comes with easy parking and a patio built for watching the sun set over the Schuylkill, which could make it a very comfortable coast. Instead, the crudos arrive in chilled honeydew consommé, and the cavatelli comes loaded with escargot and bone marrow. The suburban polish is real, but the kitchen keeps finding a way to make the familiar strange in the best sense.

  65. Rank 183. Le Virtù

    Abruzzese Italian

The pasta is hand-cut and the regulars are on a first-name basis with the staff, which tells you most of what you need to know about this Italian trattoria on East Passyunk. The kitchen draws from Abruzzo, the rugged, largely overlooked region where rustic presentation and serious technique are the same thing. Desserts are priced like it's still a neighborhood joint, because it is, and they're open every day, which feels increasingly rare.

  68. Rank 183. Rice & Sambal

    Indonesian

Indonesian BYOB on East Passyunk, where the sambal arrives in three versions and the jasmine rice is fluffy enough to make you rethink every rice you've had before it. The schedule here does a lot of the personality work: brunch on Sundays, a family-style banana-leaf spread on Saturdays, and a monthly prix fixe on weeknights that tends to linger in memory longer than the tab does. Bring a bottle.

  69. Rank 183. Royal Tavern

    American

A Citywide Special and a burger, treated with the focus of a fine-dining kitchen, is Royal Tavern's whole argument. This Bella Vista bar has been doing burgers, cherry BBQ wings, house-made mortadella, and grilled cheese in a narrow, glowing room on Passyunk for as long as anyone can remember. The kind of place where you go in for one drink and linger over two courses you didn't plan on ordering.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
