The best French food in Barcelona, according to the experts: Michelin Guide and The Infatuation have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Via Veneto comes out on top.

More Less

âme and Saó hold the next two places. Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The Infatuation next.

  1. Rank 1. Via Veneto

    Classic French

The pressed roast duck has been on the menu since before most diners were born, which tells you everything about the philosophy here. Via Veneto is a formal classic French restaurant in a genuine Belle Époque room, the kind with white tablecloths and a wine cellar six meters underground. A Michelin star. Seasonal game, old-school technique, and a cellar that serious drinkers come specifically to raid.

  2. Rank 2. âme

    French

A Franco-Mediterranean bistro where the kitchen works squarely in French technique but sources everything it can from Catalonia: prawns from Palamós, artichokes from Prat, duck and trout from the Pyrenees. Two tasting menus are the only path in, so there's no à la carte hedging. The sommelier co-runs the place, which explains why the wine feels as considered as the food. It's a small room with a focused point of view, and the menu shifts with whatever the season hands over.

  3. Rank 3. Saó

    Creative French

The name translates loosely as "ripeness" or "the right moment," which sets the tone for a creative restaurant in uptown Barcelona where seasonal Catalan produce gets a quietly French education. The chef spent years in Paris before bringing those instincts home, and the menu shows it without making a fuss. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand. Three set menus to choose from, and the savoury crema catalana with foie is the dish people keep talking about.

  4. Rank 4. Contraban

    Contemporary French

Tucked into the Gothic Quarter inside the Wittmore hotel, Contraban runs a contemporary restaurant built on classical French technique, with a menu the kitchen frames around emotions: freedom, surprise, frustration. Whether the cod fritters care about feelings is an open question, but the indoor terrace is genuinely atmospheric in the way only old-city spaces manage. Weekend brunch, too, if you need somewhere to sit with your complicated morning.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
