  14. A wine destination 80km from Beijing, Canaan Winery sits on land chosen only after a team analyzed hundreds of soil samples across more than a dozen provinces. The vines are relatively young, but the wines have developed a following among people who take that sort of thing seriously. It's the kind of place that makes a convincing case that China's wine country is a real thing worth the detour.

  17. A 27-acre estate tucked into the tea hills above Hangzhou, Dragon Well Manor is a farm-to-table restaurant that takes the concept more seriously than most: the chef keeps a handwritten ledger logging every ingredient, its source, and its delivery date, and you can ask to see it. The kitchen draws from an on-site organic plot and local farms the team scouts personally. It earned a spot on The 50 Discovery list, and the setting alone, wooden buildings amid working tea fields, does a lot of the talking.

  18. Rank 514. Obsidian Bar

    Cocktail Bar

A two-floor steampunk cocktail bar inside the Ping An Finance Center, Obsidian has a whisky display case stocked with autographed Highland malts and rare Japanese spirits that functions as its own argument for staying past midnight. The ground floor wraps around an open kitchen; upstairs, riveted windows frame the Shenzhen skyline and high-backed armchairs encourage the kind of drinking that becomes a whole evening. Guest shifts from visiting bartenders keep the programme rotating.

  19. A cocktail bar on Nanchang Road where the design philosophy comes from Virgil Abloh's 3% rule: change an existing thing by just that much and it becomes something new. The shelves hold a select few bottles, the lighting is considered, and nothing extra survives the edit. The drinks menu is equally spare, which either feels like restraint or curation depending on your mood, but the room makes a strong argument for less.

  25. A wave sculpture runs the full length of the ceiling, which tells you something about how seriously this place takes its own idea. Chao Yue is a fine-dining Chaozhou restaurant where the kitchen reinterprets Chiu Chow culinary tradition through prix fixe menus built to feel like a single continuous argument. The service is unusually considered, and the room is quiet enough that it actually matters.

  26. Rank 527. Bottega

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The Salvo brothers set up a Neapolitan pizzeria in Beijing and, somewhere along the way, made it a serious reference point for the form across Asia. The dough is soft and properly blistered, the crust light enough to suggest restraint but satisfying enough to suggest experience. Classic pies lean into tradition without apology; a few contemporary options show the kitchen hasn't stopped thinking. Pasta is on too, and the room is spacious and wine-lined, the service polished without stiffness.

  32. The Grand Hyatt's flagship dining room sits right on the edge of West Lake, and the kitchen leans into that geography, building its menus around the fish and seafood at the heart of Hangzhou cuisine. It's a formal, elegant space where the cooking is careful and precise, the service polished, and the whole experience reads as a special-occasion destination rather than a casual drop-in.

  87. Rank 528. Emmelyn

    Contemporary French

A sourdough made from a starter the kitchen has kept alive since day one is a quiet statement of intent. Emmelyn is a contemporary French restaurant in Zhujiang New Town, running seasonal set menus and à la carte, with ingredients that move between Qiandao Lake caviar, French oysters, and Iberian ham. The chef trained across New Zealand and Australia before landing here, and the cooking sits squarely where French tradition meets a lighter, modern hand.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
