The best Japanese food in Croatia, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide has weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Izakaya comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Zagreb and Mali Lošinj.

  1. Rank 1. Izakaya

    Contemporary Japanese

A contemporary Japanese restaurant a few kilometers south of the center, with a minimalist veranda out front and an interior dressed in quiet nods to the Orient. The menu runs long, from sashimi and nigiri to tataki, dim sum, and signature rolls, and the kitchen gives it all a gentle modern spin. Holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which tells you something about the prices before you even sit down.

  2. Rank 2. Matsunoki

    Contemporary Japanese

The sushi counter faces an open kitchen inside Hotel Bellevue, with a panoramic terrace over the Adriatic as an alternative. This is a contemporary Japanese restaurant doing both classic sashimi and more creative takes, plus Wagyu for anyone who arrived by yacht and wants to make sure everyone knows it. The sake and Japanese whisky list is carefully chosen, which at a resort hotel on a Croatian island is either charming or surreal, possibly both.

  4. A Japanese restaurant inside Hotel Lone where the menu runs through sushi, sashimi, gyoza, and warm soups, but the kitchen sources its fish and produce almost entirely from Istria. The effect is less fusion gimmick than quiet conversation between two very different food cultures. Summer seating in a pine-shaded garden is where you want to be, ideally with something from the cocktail list while deciding between nigiri and rabbit teriyaki.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
