  1. Rank 1. Bistro Loora

    Contemporary Eastern European

    The awards

  2. Rank 1. Taj Mahal

    Bosnian Eastern European

The name nods to nowhere near the Balkans, but the menu is all Bosnia: grilled meats from the restaurant's own butcher shop, vegetable dishes, family-recipe specialties, and a plum baklava made by the owner's mother that regulars treat as non-negotiable. This is a convivial, unfussy sit-down restaurant in Dubrovnik's Old Town, holding a Michelin Bib Gourmand, where the staff will happily walk you through a menu that runs several pages deep. Book ahead.

  3. Rank 1. Vuglec Breg

    Eastern European

Perched on a hill in the Zagorje countryside, this family-run restaurant and inn pours only from its own cellar, every label available by the glass. The menu reads like a regional primer, from mushroom-and-bacon Zagorska soup to roast veal and ricotta strudel, with homemade ice cream closing things out. Rooms and a pool make it easy to stay longer than planned. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  4. Rank 4. Mala Hiza

    Regional Eastern European

A nineteenth-century oak farmhouse, dismantled and rebuilt inside an old orchard, is now a warm, romantic family restaurant in the Međimurje countryside. The kitchen follows the seasons and leans hard into the region: filled pastas, slow-cooked meats, and the layered cheese-and-pumpkin cake called gibanica that turns up at the end of most meals here. Local wines fill the list. The kind of place that makes you want to drive into rural Croatia more often.

  5. Rank 4. Stancija Kovačići

    Eastern European

A farmhouse turned country restaurant tucked below the Učka mountains, a short drive from Opatija, where the kitchen builds the menu almost entirely around Istrian ingredients. The star is boškarin, the local cattle breed, and the slow-braised shank is the thing to order. Fish appears on the menu, but this is a meat-and-land kind of place, run by a family that has never felt the need to complicate what the region already does well.

    The awards

  6. Rank 4. Waldinger

    Regional Eastern European

A regional dining room tucked inside an Art Nouveau hotel in Osijek, with contemporary canvases hanging where you'd half-expect hunting trophies. The kitchen works closely with local farmers, so the menu shifts with the seasons and leans into Slavonian flavors, from hearty stuffed pork cuts to desserts that make the table go quiet. The wine list runs through small local producers you won't find anywhere else.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
