The best French food in Croatia, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide has weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Alfred Keller comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Mali Lošinj and Split.

Rank 1. Alfred Keller
Modern French
A terrace above the bay of Čikat frames this Michelin-starred gourmet restaurant, where the view does a lot of the talking before the food even arrives. The kitchen leans on French technique and local Adriatic ingredients, with fish and seafood at the centre of a creative tasting menu that also comes in a shorter format if you'd rather not commit your entire evening to the cause. An à la carte option and a serious wine list round things out.

Rank 1. Krug
Modern French
The kitchen sits in the middle of the dining room, wrapped by an L-shaped counter where guests watch the cooks work and hear about each dish from the people who made it. It's an intimate, chef's-counter-style restaurant a few steps from the Split waterfront, holding a Michelin star, with a menu built almost entirely from local sea and hinterland. Fish and meat age in refrigerators you can see from your seat, which is either reassuring or a conversation starter.

Rank 3. Le Bistro Esplanade
French
The glass terrace that wraps around this hotel bistro looks like a very elegant greenhouse, which suits the crowd that fills it for aperitifs or long lunches without seeming to be in any hurry. The kitchen runs French-inflected, with seasonal Croatian produce doing most of the work, and the house štrukli, cheese-filled pasta baked au gratin and a fixture here for decades, is the thing to order. Casual enough for a quick bite, polished enough to linger.
