The Best Seafood in Denmark

Sections

Tap another section to add it.

The best seafood in Denmark, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide, The 50, and the White Guide have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Restaurant Jordnær comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Copenhagen and Hjørring.

More Less

Okê and Villa Vest hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide and the White Guide show up on more of this list than any other guide.

  1. Rank 1. Restaurant Jordnær

    Creative Seafood

A chawanmushi that arrives in architectural layers sets the tone at this fine dining room in suburban Gentofte, where the cooking moves between spare precision and obsessive detail without losing the thread. Seafood and vegetables do most of the work, handled with a technical seriousness that has earned three Michelin stars and a spot on the World's 50 Best list. The room is polished, the service warm, and the tasting menu long enough that you should probably cancel your morning.

  2. Rank 2. Okê

    Seafood

Shell-covered columns and a glass-walled kitchen set the mood at this Michelin-starred fine dining room inside a seaside resort, where ten tables and a meal that can run six hours suggest you should cancel your morning plans. The multi-course menu leans into luxury seafood with a well-traveled sensibility, pulling influences from Southeast Asia alongside whatever the North Sea offers up.

  3. Rank 3. Villa Vest

    Creative Seafood

The dining room is built into the cliffs above Lønstrup, with the North Sea filling the windows in a way that makes the food feel like an editorial decision. This Michelin-starred creative restaurant runs a three-course menu or a longer seasonal tasting menu, both shaped around local seafood and meats raised by the owner. The chef grew up in the area, and the cooking reads that way, precise and rooted, without making a fuss about it.

  4. A circular aquarium and a glass-fronted wine cellar greet you inside this seafood restaurant, which occupies a former butcher's shop in Copenhagen's old meatpacking district. The kitchen runs its own fish butchery and charcuterie programme, working through the day's local catch on handmade pottery plates. The combination of industrial bones and delicate seafood is exactly as incongruous as it sounds, and somehow that's the point.

  7. A lobster tank in the corner, sea-themed wallpaper, and royal portraits watching over the room: this old-school seafood restaurant on Gammel Strand has been around forever, occupying the site of Copenhagen's original fish market. Bouillabaisse, turbot on the bone, and a wine list heavy on champagne and burgundies keep the menu suitably serious. The granite bar counter facing the open kitchen makes it comfortable for solo diners too.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
