The best dessert shops in Italy, according to the experts: 50 Top Italy and Eater have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Fusto comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Rome and Milan.

More Less

Pietro Macellaro and La Sfogliatella Mary hold the next two places. 50 Top Italy shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Eater next.

  1. Rank 1. Fusto

  2. Rank 1. Pietro Macellaro

    Artisanal Dessert

A four-hectare farm in the Cilento hills supplies most of what this artisan pastry shop turns into chocolate. The team grows their own ingredients, then sources obsessively for the rest, blending cacao into pralines perfumed with mountain oregano or wild violets steeped in cream. The panettone ferments in three stages and lands fragrant and barely sweet. Ranked among Italy's top praline makers by 50 Top Italy, which also named it Pastry Shop of the Year.

  3. Rank 3. La Sfogliatella Mary

    Neapolitan Dessert

A pastry counter on Via Toledo that runs continuous production of sfogliatelle and babà so there's always something coming out warm. The point is freshness, and regulars know it: you grab one to eat while walking back from Piazza del Plebiscito, not to save for later. The babà ranks among the top ten in the country on the 50 Top Italy list. Caprese cakes and cassate fill out the case for anyone who needs a second reason to stop.

  4. Rank 4. Slitti

    Dessert

  5. Rank 4. Two Sizes

  6. The cocoa perfume hits before the door does. This old-school chocolate shop near the Pantheon has been here since the Savoy court moved from Turin, and it moves at the same unhurried pace. Glass cases hold more than 80 handmade chocolates and bonbons; in autumn, locals come specifically for the marrons glacés, whole or as paste. A small box is a perfectly decent souvenir, though a kilo starts to feel like a personal tradition.

  7. Rank 7. My Sugar

    Ice Cream Shop

A gelato shop run by a husband-and-wife team on Via de' Ginori, My Sugar churns classic flavors alongside more unexpected ones, including dark chocolate spiked with local Chianti. Florence takes its gelato seriously, and this younger operation holds its own among the old guard. The seasonal fruit flavors skew crowd-pleasing; the green tea and pure peanut suggest someone is quietly having fun with the menu.

  8. Rank 7. Pavé Gelati

    Ice Cream Shop

A gelateria where the sugar is dialed down on purpose, letting the actual fruit and cream do the talking. The sleek, minimal shop is the Milan outpost of the Pavé team, and the small-batch philosophy shows in the sourcing: Bronte pistachio, Piedmont hazelnut, fair-trade chocolate. Seasonal experiments like ricotta or white chocolate with lime and salt rotate through, which keeps regulars guessing. Bring cash and a strong opinion about cones versus cups.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
