The Best French Food in Italy

The best French food in Italy, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide and 50 Top Italy have both weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. FRE comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Corte Franca and Florence.

More Less

Il Ristorante Alain Ducasse Napoli and Casa Manfredi hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with 50 Top Italy next.

  1. Rank 1. FRE

    French

Tucked into the vineyards of the Langhe, this Michelin-starred fine dining room sits on a wine resort just outside Monforte d'Alba, where the chef applies French technique to local Piedmontese ingredients with a light hand. The menu reads as a conversation between two culinary traditions, and the wine list is deep enough to keep you there longer than planned. A bistrot next door handles the more casual crowd.

  2. On the ninth floor of the ROMEO hotel, this fine dining room is all black, with Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples framed in the windows. Alain Ducasse lends his name and his cuisine de la naturalité philosophy, while the executive chef translates Campanian fish and vegetables through precise, short cooking times and textbook French sauces. One Michelin star. Sunset, unsurprisingly, draws a crowd.

  3. Rank 3. Casa Manfredi

  4. A dining room lined with books, paintings, and wine bottles so dense it reads more like a private library than a restaurant. This old-school Veronese spot has been in the same family forever, and it shows: you pass through the bar first, then settle in for a menu of charcuterie, strong French cheese, and serious meat and fish dishes, backed by a cellar running to around two thousand labels.

  5. Rank 4. Cuculia

    Contemporary French

A small library of cookbooks lines the wall, which tells you something about the kind of dinner you're in for. This creative restaurant in the Oltrarno channels the feel of a French bistrot while the kitchen draws on Venezuelan, French, Spanish, and Italian training. Seasonal Tuscan produce lands alongside kombu and koji without any of it feeling like a pitch. Vegetarian and vegan dishes are clearly flagged, a thoughtful touch that rarely gets mentioned until you need it.

  6. Rank 4. Partage

    French

A young chef shaped by home cooking and a stretch in French kitchens runs this intimate contemporary restaurant in the middle of town. Lunch keeps things relaxed and affordable; evenings open into a more personal à la carte where land and sea dishes show off what the training was actually for. A carefully chosen natural wine list runs alongside, coherent rather than showy.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
