The 20 Best Steakhouses in Italy

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best steakhouses in Italy, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide, 50 Top Italy, and the World's 101 Best have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Damini Macelleria & Affini comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Milan.

More Less

I Due Cippi dal 1976 and La Braseria hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with 50 Top Italy next.

  1. You walk in through a butcher shop, past cured meats and niche pantry goods worth lingering over, before finding the dining room tucked behind it all. At this Michelin-starred restaurant, meat is the main event, sourced regionally and from further afield, with a menu that moves between classic preparations and more inventive ideas. Wine bottles line the walls, and the cellar behind them is serious business.

  2. The open-fire grill in the middle of the room isn't decor; it's the whole argument. This is a serious steakhouse in a small Tuscan thermal-spring town, built around dry-aged beef from Italian and Japanese breeds, cooked over wood with the confidence of a kitchen that's been doing this for a long time. Chianina, wagyu, and game all pass through the same fire. It holds the number four spot on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list, which the room backs up quietly.

  3. Rank 3. La Braseria

    Italian Steakhouse

The dry-ageing chambers are visible from the dining room, which tells you exactly what kind of place La Braseria is before anyone hands you a menu. This meat-focused restaurant near Bergamo sources Italian breeds and in-house ages the beef before it meets a wood and charcoal grill. Warm stone, low light, and a team that knows the wine list cold. It ranked 39th on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list, if that helps calibrate the occasion.

  4. A craft beer bar and meat-skewer spot on Piazza Cairoli that was pairing local brews with quality cuts before it became anyone's idea of a concept. The menu runs well beyond burgers into pork, chicken, and other skewered things, with a beer list long enough to require some help from the genuinely enthusiastic staff. It looks like a pub from the outside, which keeps expectations honest and the room easy.

  5. Dario Cecchini, the butcher-philosopher of Panzano who once staged his own funeral to protest EU meat regulations, runs this fixed-menu steak restaurant where the experience begins outside, with Cecchini himself wishing every table bon appétit. The meat arrives cooked to medium rare, no negotiations, and the sides are fresh and well-considered. Hours are fixed, the cost is fixed, and the only real variable is how quickly you make friends with whoever's sitting next to you.

  9. Rank 6. Eggentaler

    Steakhouse

The charcoal grill has been the main attraction at this old-school South Tyrolean restaurant since long before anyone eating there was born. The Schmieder family has run it for decades, and the smoke-kissed meats are still the reason to come, though the kitchen also moves through Italian seafood and land dishes with quiet confidence. A family member curates the wine list personally, which shows. It sits just off the Bolzano highway, convenient in the way that only truly committed restaurants can be.

  10. Rank 6. El Primero

    Steakhouse

The building itself was Uruguay's pavilion at Expo 2015, which explains why a steakhouse in Origgio has mountain views and architectural ambition. It's a South American grill focused on Uruguayan beef, with a live parilla fire burning in full sight of the dining room. The meat traces back to certified Uruguayan farms, and the parillero works it slowly. Uruguayan and Italian wines handle the rest.

  14. The large fridge near the entrance does the menu explaining before you've sat down, stacked with dry-aged cuts and house-cured salumi. This is a Lombard butcher-restaurant where Piedmontese beef is the point, grilled over coals or served boiled in the old style. In summer the courtyard fills up and the place feels like the kind of lunch that quietly takes the whole afternoon.

  15. Rank 6. Ostaria

    Steakhouse

A meat-focused osteria a short walk from the island of Ortigia, where the kitchen ages cuts on the premises and fires them in a Josper oven. The sourcing leans toward non-intensive farms, which the menu is happy to tell you about. Sicilian wines anchor a list that wanders usefully beyond the island. Soft lighting and genuinely warm service make the whole thing feel less like a steakhouse and more like someone's very well-stocked dining room.

  16. Rank 6. Scuderie Sabaude

    Piedmontese Steakhouse

Charcoal smoke drifts through the vaulted stone arches of what used to be a royal stable, which sets the mood before you've sat down. This is a meat-forward restaurant in Pollenzo, steps from the University of Gastronomic Sciences, where Piedmontese scottona arrives in several aging stages alongside Chianina and Alpina cuts. The sourcing is serious, the cooking method is fire, and the setting looks like it was designed by someone who understood atmosphere before the word existed.

  19. Rank 20. Regina Bistecca

    Tuscan Steakhouse

The dining room is a former anatomical theatre steps from the Duomo, and the vaulted ceilings and antique bookshelves make the setting feel theatrical without trying. Regina Bistecca is a wood-fired steak restaurant built around Tuscan beef, dry-aged and cooked over flame with the kind of restraint that lets the meat do the arguing. Chianti Classico and Brunello anchor the wine list. It landed on the World's Best Steak Restaurants ranking.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
