Kinds of places

Cuisines

  1. The soup comes first, every day, which tells you something about the priorities at this casual lunch spot near the Matosinhos Market. The short weekday menu rotates with whatever looked good at the stalls that morning, landing anywhere from pasta to chicken curry. Hearty open-faced toasts fill out the lighter end of things. The whole operation runs at market pace: quick, unfussy, and done by afternoon.

  2. Rank 88. O Buraco

    Portuguese

  3. Rank 88. O Velho Eurico

    Portuguese

A terrace shaded by leafy trees halfway up the hill to São Jorge Castle makes this old-school Lisbon restaurant a logical excuse to sit down before you've earned it. The menu changes daily and lands somewhere between traditional Portuguese and quietly modern, the kind of cooking that fills reservations weeks out. Expect the sort of crowd that planned ahead and feels smug about it.

  4. Ham legs hang from the ceiling and plates of food fill the window at this old-school neighborhood tasco on Rua do Heroísmo. One family runs the whole show, pouring cold beers, slicing cured presunto, and stacking sandwiches on the slate counter while cod fritters and deep-fried tripe cycle through as daily snacks. Gentrification has reshaped most of the block around it, and Xico has not noticed.

  5. The rissol, Portugal's half-moon fried pastry, gets a French-inflected upgrade at this snug vintage spot overlooking the Jardim de São Lázaro. The couple behind it came up through Paris fine dining and now stuff their rissóis with organic fillings that run from classic beef and fish to Thai green curry. Grab a table outside when the garden is doing its thing. It's a casual snack stop, priced accordingly, and the kind of place that makes a simple thing feel considered.

  6. Rank 88. Pata Gorda

    Portuguese

  7. White tablecloths, dark wood, upholstered chairs: O Fernando looks exactly like the kind of traditional Portuguese restaurant where nothing needs to change. And mostly, nothing has. The kitchen still turns out roast baby goat with potatoes and baked rice that pulls people back reliably, alongside salt cod and slow-cooked veal. The wine list reportedly has opinions of its own. The crowd skews local, dressed up just enough to match the room.

  9. Rank 88. Ryoshi

    Traditional Japanese

The cultural through-line here is Brazil's deep love affair with Japanese food, expressed in one of Lisbon's more quietly interesting Japanese restaurants. Chef Lucas Azevedo, São Paulo-born and Lisbon-based for decades, leans toward the traditional end of the spectrum: think grilled rice balls, horse mackerel tartare, and chicken wing gyoza that regulars are already treating as the reason they booked.

  10. A poster in the doorway reads "Fine dining is dead," which sets the tone nicely for a tasca that then serves beef tartare and gizzard tempura. This no-frills neighborhood spot in Mouraria is part of a new wave updating the traditional Portuguese tavern without making it precious about it. Sharing plates, affordable prices, and a dining room loud enough that you don't have to worry about what you're wearing.

  11. Rank 88. Tasca Pete

    Seasonal Portuguese

The handwritten menu changes weekly, listing whatever arrived fresh that morning, in the spirit of the traditional tasca this small room used to be. Peter Templeton, a British expat who fell for the neighborhood, runs an unfussy seasonal restaurant in Penha de França with 18 seats and prices that won't send you into quiet despair. It feels personal because it is, and booking ahead is less a suggestion than a necessity.

  12. Rank 88. Tati

    Argentine

  13. Rank 88. Vida De Tasca

    Portuguese

The space hosted a classic tasca for over 40 years before the current chef, who put in real time visiting traditional Portuguese eateries before opening her own, took it over. This is an Alvalade neighborhood tavern running daily specials, cod fritters, croquettes, and affordable tabs with zero fuss. In a city where neo-tascas are everywhere and half of them know it, this one seems to have forgotten to be smug about it.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
