  3. Floor-to-ceiling windows face out over Sunset Boulevard from every room in this twelve-story hotel, part of Hilton's Curio Collection. The rooms run large by LA standards, with proper living spaces even in the base category and balconies as you move up. The rooftop pool and its lounge add the sweeping skyline views you'd expect, along with a laidback on-site restaurant. It's a solid perch for anyone who wants the Strip without living in it.

  5. A 48-room boutique hotel in West Adams, a neighborhood better known for its restaurants than its overnight options. Alsace LA leans into an unlikely pairing of Southern California ease and Western European sensibility, with a courtyard, a small pool, and a fitness center that takes itself seriously. A modern Japanese restaurant by Danny Elmaleh is on site, and the surrounding streets give guests plenty of reasons to wander.

  33. Woven rattan pendants, curved wooden headboards, and patterned throws replace the usual beachy kitsch at this 70-room clifftop boutique hotel, which reopened recently with a Mallorcan-inflected, warm-minimalist sensibility. The Pacific does the decorating through the windows. Ocean-facing rooms add balconies or pool access, and a guest-only policy keeps things quieter than you'd expect for a place this central to Laguna's gallery-and-restaurant corridor.

    Modern Oaxacan Taqueria

Dark masa quesadillas filled with Oaxacan cheese, in-house tortillas, and tacos served all day set the tone at this modern Oaxacan spot a short walk from the Venice beach scene. The room looks the part, all bright and California-casual, and the mezcal list gives you something to do while you decide between the barbacoa and the tinga de pollo. The Los Angeles Times put it on its Fifty Under $50 list, which tracks.

  92. A boutique hotel sitting right on Redondo Beach's harbor, Shade trades on a location that drew resort-builders here long before the boutique concept existed. Rooms lean coastal-modern without overdoing the nautical clichés, and the South Bay light does most of the decorating. It holds a spot in the Michelin Selected Hotels list, which tracks if you're after somewhere small and considered rather than a big anonymous beach block.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
