The Best Places in Brooklyn

Eat + Stay + Do, change section

Departments

A department belongs to one section, so choosing one narrows the list to it.

  1. A coffee shop in East Williamsburg that skips the iPad-flip tip prompt entirely, which alone earns goodwill before the espresso arrives. The team runs it as a multi-roaster cafe, rotating names like Onyx and Obscure Coffee, with excellent pastries from Native Bread alongside. Bar takeovers and barista events keep things lively without tipping into self-important. The vibe is coffee-serious without being coffee-cold, which in this neighborhood is a genuine achievement.

  2. The curved ceiling and wood fixtures make this narrow coffee shop look a little like a vintage railway car, which is more than most cafes can say. The original location of what's now a multiborough roaster and chain, it pulls shots from seasonally rotating single origins and house blends alongside pastries from Colson. Warmer and more lived-in than the sterile white-box aesthetic that swept the neighborhood, with sidewalk seats for anyone who enjoys watching Williamsburg go by.

  5. A gallery of cow portraits on the wall sets the tone at this no-frills Park Slope coffee shop, which does not take itself too seriously but does take espresso seriously. Black & White roasts come out of a small, sunny space with tile backsplash, a handful of stools, and Colson pastries for the indecisive. The staff know what they're doing, which in this neighborhood is less common than it should be.

  9. Peaches HotHouse is a casual Bed-Stuy counter-service spot for Nashville hot chicken, back when that was a rare find in the city and long before the chains with celebrity backing showed up. You pick your heat (regular, hot, extra hot) and your bird, shrimp, or catfish, then add grits and collards. Dress for a paper-lined basket and a mild sweat. Eater lists it among the best places to eat in the neighborhood.

  10. Rank 306. Principles GI Coffee House

    Personality-Driven Coffee

The pourover menu specifies black only, no exceptions, which tells you everything about this coffee shop before you've ordered. A queer-owned community hub straddling Park Slope and Gowanus, Principles runs on small rotating roasters, plant-based milks across the board, and a gratuity-included model. Cyclists and coffee obsessives fill the place, drawn as much by the ethos as the espresso. The garage door opens when weather permits, and there's a bike repair area out back.

  12. Rank 306. Southside Coffee

    Minimalist Coffee

Window-service only since 2020, this minimalist coffee shop in South Slope turned its interior into a commissary, which turns out to be a fine trade. Counter Culture beans anchor the drinks, but the daily-rotating pastries, cheddar jalapeño corn muffins, and hugely bready sandwiches are what bring out the line of families and dogs. Greenwood Cemetery is an easy walk, if you need somewhere to eat.

  24. Rank 339. Lagman House

    Chinese Noodle Shop

  25. A tasting counter in Brooklyn where the kitchen uses yuzu as sauerkraut draped over clams instead of a tidy squeeze of acid. Chef Victoria Blamey's avant-garde tasting menu runs about three hours and tends to fill your head with strong flavors that most restaurants at this price point seem too nervous to attempt. The Dungeness crab empanada, built on a Chilean abalone dish with Chartreuse and fermented black beans, is the kind of thing that makes you question your senses.

  26. A prix-fixe dinner party where strangers share a table and, apparently, an extraordinary chocolate cake. The cake alone landed on the New York Times list of top dishes of 2024: dark cocoa crumb, pink-peppercorn buttercream, and the kind of thing that makes you rethink everything you assumed about the format. Communal seating and a tasting menu in the $60 to $75 range make this feel more like a good dinner at a friend's place than a restaurant.

  27. Nasim Alikhani's minimalist Persian cafe on Flatbush is the kind of place you visit for one thing and leave thinking about it for weeks. That thing is the latifeh, a traditional confection the New York Times flagged as one of 2024's top New York dishes: two rounds of soft, rose-scented cream sandwiched between pastry and rolled in salted pistachios. Made fresh constantly so they never turn soggy, each one disappears faster than you planned.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
