The best bakeries in Brooklyn, according to the experts: The Infatuation, The New York Times, and Time Out have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Radio Bakery comes out on top.

More Less

Win Son Bakery and Winner hold the next two places. The Infatuation shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with BagelUp next.

  1. The line down the block on weekends is a reliable feature, and so is the sign that says they've sold out early. Radio Bakery is a small Greenpoint spot where croissants get shaped like Danishes and filled with whatever's good that month, focaccia sandwiches come stuffed with smoked salmon and cream cheese, and the brown butter corn cake is the thing to grab for later. Frustrating in all the right ways.

  5. Rank 5. Bagel Pub

    NY-Style Bakery

Stainless steel baskets lined with egg everything and pumpernickel everything tell you all you need to know before you've even ordered. This Crown Heights bagel shop turns out chewy, substantial rounds that hold up to the ambitious sandwich menu, where chipotle-bacon cream cheese and asparagus on a breakfast sandwich feel less weird than they should. The weekend line goes out the door, which at a bagel shop is either a warning or a recommendation, depending on how much you've had to eat.

  6. The mission here is explicit: no rainbow bagels, no blueberry bagels, no what Peter Shelsky calls the "shiksa bagel." This Park Slope bagel shop makes small, crust-forward rounds in the New York tradition, though the Sichuan peppercorn bagel, a nod to the long Jewish-Chinese-food alliance, bends the rules just enough. The New York Times named it among the city's best, which is the only endorsement that really matters in this particular argument.

  13. Rank 12. Wheated

    Pizzeria

The New Haven-style pies here are cooked to a serious crunch, with dough pressed thinner than the Connecticut purists would sanction and a tangy, oregano-heavy tomato sauce that makes a decent argument for staying in Brooklyn. Wheated is a Ditmas Park pizzeria with a full bar that also does bagels, so the menu has range. The New York Times put it on their best pizza in New York list, which is the kind of thing that fills a neighborhood spot fast.

  14. The name nods to the two stones used to grind grain, and the flour-sack-shaped concrete blocks lining the walls suggest nobody here is being subtle about the theme. This Brooklyn bakery-restaurant splits its menu between sandwiches and salads, with the bread doing most of the talking. A Per Se alum runs the bakery side, which shows. Save room for dessert, then buy something extra for the walk home.

  26. Rank 33. Bien Cuit

    French Bakery

The sign out front reads "pastry well done," which is essentially what Bien Cuit means and also a fair warning about their croissants. This French bakery in Cobble Hill turns out deeply caramelized pastries so symmetrical and architecturally precise they look almost too deliberate to eat. Eater put them on its best croissants in NYC list. Drier than the butter-pools-on-your-fingers school, but the lamination is immaculate. Additional locations in Crown Heights and Grand Central.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
