The 31 Best Coffee Shops in Manhattan

The best coffee shops in Manhattan, according to the experts: US Coffee Championships, Time Out, and Eater have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Coffee Project New York comes out on top.

More Less

Abraço and La Cabra hold the next two places. Time Out shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The Infatuation close behind.

  1. The cured olive cookie has been living rent-free in regulars' heads for years, which tells you something about this East Village espresso bar. Abraço roasts its own, keeps laptops out, and occasionally pivots to cocktails for evening music events, which is either a flex or just very New York. The room fills fast on weekends, the bites are small and creative, and the whole operation runs with a neighborhood-institution energy that's genuinely hard to fake.

  2. A U-shaped bar anchors this Danish coffee shop, where streamlined taps for cold drinks share space with a proper V60 setup and a counter lined with pastries worth stopping for. La Cabra built a following in Copenhagen before planting roots on the Lower East Side, and the East Village original still draws a crowd that treats croissants and a carefully pulled espresso as a reasonable reason to leave the house.

  4. Rank 5. Grace Street

    Korean Coffee Shop

  5. The picture window looks out on a community garden at 9th and Avenue C, and that's about as decorative as this coffee shop gets. Ninth Street Espresso has been a purist espresso spot in Alphabet City since what feels like the dawn of specialty coffee, roasting its own beans out in Long Island City and keeping the menu ruthlessly short. A cookie, a vegan mini-loaf, a bench out front if the weather allows.

  6. Rank 6. Suited

    Thoughtful Coffee

Concrete floors, black accent walls, and two arc-shaped bars make this FiDi coffee shop feel like it wandered in from Brooklyn and decided to stay. A multi-roaster menu pulls from a rotating cast of serious names, and the espresso machine moonlights for by-the-cup drip. There's a small food menu, housemade pastries, and, naturally, wine. Laptop seating is deliberately scarce, which says everything about what the room is for.

  17. The lobby of the Classic Stage Company turns out to be a fine place for a coffee shop, all spare seats and big windows that beg you to watch people cross 13th Street. Everyman is a no-frills espresso bar pulling beans roasted by Black and White out of North Carolina, with Colson pastries from Brooklyn if you need something to eat. The staff are warm in a way that makes the spartan room feel intentional rather than unfinished.

  18. Rank 25. Hien From Vietnam

    Vietnamese Coffee Shop

  19. Two benches out front are famous enough to appear in the logo, which tells you something about how long this West Village coffee shop has been part of the neighborhood. Joe Coffee Company roasts its own beans in Long Island City and piles the pastry case high with muffins and quickbreads. It has the warm, unhurried feel of a place where regulars know the staff by name, which in New York passes for a small miracle.

  20. Rank 25. Mee Sum Cafe

    Chinese Coffee Shop

  21. A tea room and cafe on the second floor of a Bowery building, reached by buzzing an unmarked door and climbing an industrial staircase. Neon gramophones, Togo couches, a vinyl listening room, and a DJ who drops in twice daily to play something like Boards of Canada on a sound system that did not come cheap. The MacBook presence is significant, but the Japanese teas and pastries give everyone a reasonable excuse to stay.

  22. Metal band posters on the walls and distorted guitars blasting while someone brews the most delicate pour-overs in Williamsburg is the whole vibe at this small coffee shop. The owner sources from Brooklyn's Sey roastery and makes his own blends, and the result is coffee that tastes less like coffee than like the memory of a fruit. The drip is worth the trip on its own if you're not in a splurging mood.

  23. Rank 31. Kopitiam

    Malaysian Coffee Shop

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
