The best pizza in Manhattan, according to the experts: Time Out, 50 Top Pizza, and The New York Times have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. MAMA'S TOO! comes out on top.

More Less

Mama's Too and Una Pizza Napoletana hold the next two places. The New York Times shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with 50 Top Pizza next.

  1. Rank 1. MAMA'S TOO!

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The square slices here come out of the pan thick, crisp-bottomed, and generously topped, which is the whole argument. This Upper West Side counter spot runs on a steady churn of regulars and walk-ins, with a few seats if you're lucky and no pretense about it either way. The cacio e pepe slice landed on Time Out's list of the best pizzas in the world, and 50 Top Pizza puts the shop at number four for slices in the country.

  2. The triangular house slice here has a quiet cult following, which is funny for a spot that built its name on thick, square Sicilian cuts. This is a counter-service pizza shop where the square pies come topped with things like cacio e pepe and street corn, and the olive oil and grated Parm on the regular slice draws inevitable Di Fara comparisons. Time Out put the cacio e pepe among the best pizzas in the world, if that helps you decide.

  3. Anthony Mangieri runs the wood-burning oven himself, every service, at this airy Lower East Side pizza shop tiled in black and white and lined with canned tomatoes. The Neapolitan pies come out with fluffy edges and thin, papery crusts, topped with not much more than mozzarella di bufala and sweet tomato sauce, which is the whole point. A Michelin Bib Gourmand and ranked first in the country by 50 Top Pizza USA. Reservations are scarce, so arrive early and queue.

  4. Rank 4. Don Antonio

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

The Montanara Starita comes out of the kitchen lightly fried, sauced, and finished in the wood-fired oven, which is a more interesting origin story than most Midtown pizzas can claim. This Neapolitan pizza shop off Times Square is the New York branch of a Naples institution, run by a chef who grew up in the family craft. Ranked seventh on 50 Top Pizza USA, it draws a crowd that skips the tourist traps one block over and knows exactly what they came for.

  6. The booths at this coal-oven pizza parlor are so carved up with initials and signatures that the wood itself is basically a guestbook for the last several decades of Greenwich Village. Whole pies only, thin-crusted and charred just right, no slices and no exceptions. The room is loud, cheerful, and not trying to impress anyone, which is precisely why it has been full since before most of its customers were born.

  7. Rank 6. L’industrie Pizzeria

    NY-Style Pizzeria

  8. A pizza shop inside a Times Square subway station, which sounds like a dare and turns out to be a genuinely good idea. Black-and-white checkered floors and 80s classics on the speakers give it a casual, slightly punk energy, and the thin-crust pies hold their own against the commuter chaos outside. Small plates cycle with the seasons before the pizza arrives. The Michelin Guide has taken note.

  9. A few steps from Madison Square Park, this pizza shop has made a name for itself with a well-fermented dough that stays light enough to eat without regret. The round NY-style pies lean into garlic, while the square pepperoni comes out properly leavened and crisp underneath. The XXL mozzarella stick, served with marinara, is the kind of starter that settles the question of whether to order it immediately. 50 Top Pizza USA ranked it thirteenth in the country.

  10. Rank 11. Ribalta

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

A few steps from Union Square, Ribalta is a Neapolitan pizza spot that takes its dough seriously, the kind of light, well-leavened crust that makes the New York slice feel like a different food entirely. The room is spacious and lively without being loud, and the menu runs well beyond pizza into appetizers and mains. It landed at number eight on 50 Top Pizza USA, which the regulars packing the tables on a Tuesday probably already knew.

  11. Rank 12. Audace

    Italian

The brick oven sits in full view of the dining room, which at a Neapolitan-leaning pizza restaurant in Flatiron is either a statement or a dare. Audace is the kind of place where the dough does the talking: light, well-leavened, the sort that doesn't leave you horizontal by dessert. The room is calm and low-key, the service attentive without hovering. It landed on 50 Top Pizza USA and took their Best Cocktail List award, which is not a thing most pizza spots can say.

  12. Rank 12. Ceres

    NY-Style Pizzeria

A whole-pie-only pizza shop in Little Italy where forty-minute waits after ordering are a known feature, not a glitch. The room is dark wood and minimal, with long counter seating facing the oven, and it moves with the focused calm of a place that has decided exactly what it is. Thin, crispy NY-style pies, no topping customization, no half-measures. The New York Times named it among the city's best pizza right now.

  13. Rank 12. Filaga

    Pizzeria

Inside Chelsea Market, Filaga runs a counter-service slice shop where the tray pizza arrives crispy, well-seasoned, and loaded with ingredients imported from Italy. The kitchen, oven, and prep are all in plain sight, and the whole setup is designed for the market's constant foot traffic rather than a leisurely lunch. Seating is shared and wherever you find a spot. It ranked eighth on the 50 Top Pizza Slice USA list, which is the kind of thing that draws a line.

  14. Rank 15. Cello’s Pizza

    New York-style Pizzeria

A few whole pies rotate under the heat lamps and slices go fast at this East Village slice shop on St. Marks, which lands at number 14 on the 50 Top Pizza Slice USA list. The model is straightforward: New York-style by the slice, cold beer, and no lingering decisions required. The dough is thin and foldable, and the topping hand is generous. More room than you'd expect for the neighborhood.

  15. Rank 15. Kesté Pizza&Vino

    Neapolitan Pizzeria

Neapolitan pizza in the Financial District, which sounds like a setup to a joke but works out fine. Kesté is a cozy pizza shop with a rustic dining room and outdoor tables that catch the downtown foot traffic on good days. The crust is the point: light, properly blistered, and topped without chaos. The wine and beer list is short enough that you won't agonize. Ranked 21st on 50 Top Pizza USA.

  16. Roberta's slice shop in the Penn District finishes each slice after the oven, adding basil, chili oil, or honey depending on what you ordered, which sounds fussy until you see how well it works. The long communal table inside spills out to Penn Plaza and connects up to a rooftop, so the format is grab-and-go but the footprint is not. The Bee Sting, with soppressata and honey, is the one regulars seem to circle back to.

  17. A wood-fired pizzeria on Mulberry Street where the margherita is the argument: light, airy dough with a properly blistered crust and ingredients that don't try to do too much. The room runs contemporary and lively, and on mild nights the outdoor patio makes the whole thing feel like a small favor from the city. The wine list is surprisingly deep for a pizza spot. Save room for the montebianco.

  19. Rank 19. San Matteo

    Pizzeria

A Neapolitan pizza and cucina spot on the Upper East Side with large windows that swing open in warm weather, a wine cellar visible from the dining room, and enough space between tables that a conversation stays your own. The crust runs thin and light, the kind that doesn't need a verdict. Croquettes, pasta, and calzones round out the menu, and the staff manages attentive without hovering, which in New York is its own achievement.

  27. A Lower East Side slice shop open until 3:30 a.m. on weekends, Jonny's turns out thin, bubble-blistered pies that hold up at any hour, which is not something you can say about most places keeping those hours. The chef taught himself the craft through obsessive pizza eating and some deep Reddit rabbit holes, and the fermented dough shows it. The New York Times named it one of the city's 22 best pizza spots.

  28. Rank 29. Patsy's Pizzeria

    Coal-Oven Pizzeria

Coal-fired slice shops don't come much more old-school than this Upper West Side institution, where a whole pie still runs under $20 and the coal oven has been doing the same thing forever. The thin, soft crust holds big rounds of aged mozzarella, and the received wisdom here is to order it plain, because the pizza doesn't need your help. The pale outer edge is fine; everything inside it makes the case.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
