The best breakfast in Manhattan, according to the experts: Eater, The New York Times, and Michelin Guide have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Superiority Burger comes out on top.

More Less

Thai Diner and Cocina Consuelo hold the next two places. Eater shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The New York Times next.

  1. Rank 1. Superiority Burger

    Vegetarian American

The quinoa-chickpea-walnut burger that made Brooks Headley famous is still on the menu at this vegetarian burger shop in the East Village, now in a bigger room with vintage diner bones. Nothing here pretends to be meat, which turns out to be the whole point. The Michelin Bib Gourmand and a New York Times top-100 spot follow naturally from cooking that treats bold seasoning and smart texture as the actual job. Save room for dessert; Headley came up as a pastry chef.

  2. The corrugated metal-and-wood façade on Mott Street is hard to miss, and the inside delivers: a Thai-accented diner with rattan screens, woven bamboo, and counter seats worn smooth by regulars. Ann Redding and Matt Danzer run the kitchen, and Thai tea French toast is available all day because breakfast should not have a curfew. The Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand, and the New York Times puts it at number 52 on its NYC list.

  3. There's a piano near the door, and on weekends kids actually play it while their families work through lazy breakfasts nearby. Cocina Consuelo is a supper club in Harlem built from a pandemic-era Mexican pop-up, and the home-cooking warmth masks some real kitchen ambition: masa pancakes from heirloom corn, birria over bone marrow. The New York Times named it one of the city's best new restaurants in 2025, and also called out the masa pancake among the top dishes of 2024.

  4. Rank 5. Cafe Sabarsky

    Austrian Bakery

Inside the Neue Galerie on Museum Mile, this Viennese kaffeehaus occupies a dark-paneled room upholstered in Otto Wagner fabric, which sets the tone quickly. The cafe serves schnitzel and goulash, but the cakes are the real argument for coming: Sachertorte, Linzer torte, and a chocolate mousse number with far more going on than the name suggests. The crowd tends toward the museum-going and the unhurried, which fits the pace of the place perfectly.

  5. The honey cardamom toast alone sends a signal about where the Noortwyck's head is at. This West Village neighborhood restaurant comes from Eleven Madison Park alums, and the menu moves between oysters and cinnamon rolls without blinking. The New York Times gave it two stars. Service has that unhurried quality that makes you feel less like a table and more like a regular, even on your first visit.

  7. One of the last dim sum parlors in Chinatown still rolling carts through the dining room, House of Joy fills fast on weekends, and the wait outside can stretch past an hour if you don't arrive early. Worth the patience: plates of rice noodles, pineapple buns, and chicken feet run a few dollars each, and the room itself, loud and bustling and completely unbothered by trends, does most of the convincing.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
