The 10 Best Vegetarian in Belgium

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best vegetarian in Belgium, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide, The 50, and Le Fooding have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Arabelle Meirlaen comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Brussels and Antwerp.

More Less

humus x hortense and Amour hold the next two places. Le Fooding shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with the Michelin Guide next.

  1. Arabelle Meirlaen grows much of what she cooks in the garden out back, and the terrace over it is the place to be in summer. This is a one-Michelin-star creative restaurant where vegetables and spices lead, floral aromas run through everything, and the chef's own intuition sets the menu. She offers a vegetarian option alongside a meat-and-fish version, and the owner-sommelier builds the wine list around rotating themes rather than the usual categories.

  2. Gilded ceilings and frescoes of angels overhead, and a plant-based tasting menu below, which is either a contradiction or a perfect match. This Michelin-starred restaurant in Ixelles has been doing zero-waste, micro-seasonal vegetable cooking since well before it was a dinner-party talking point. The sommelière runs a beverage program serious enough to match the kitchen, and the whole operation publishes a sustainability report, because of course it does.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
