The 24 Best Bistros in Belgium

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best bistros in Belgium, according to the experts: Le Fooding, the Michelin Guide, and The Infatuation have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Album comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Antwerp and Brussels.

More Less

Charlu and Convento Wijnbistro hold the next two places. Le Fooding shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with the Michelin Guide close behind.

    Contemporary Bistro

A converted warehouse on the Vlaamse Kaai that still feels like one, in the way only a good renovation manages. This modern restaurant runs lunch menus and a five-course dinner, built around food that pairs smoky and sweet without apology. The sourdough is made in-house and sold at the door, which tells you where the kitchen's head is at. Picked up a spot in the Michelin Guide.

  2. Rank 1. Charlu

    Gascon Bistro

A grand old villa in the Saint-Job neighborhood houses this French bistro where the menu runs firmly southwest, cassoulet and pig's trotters and all. Wainscoting, mirrors, and tables packed close enough to overhear your neighbor's wine opinions set the room. The owner's wine opinions are also available, offered freely and at length. Classic bistronomy, cooked with evident conviction.

  4. A wine-forward French bistro where counter seats face the open kitchen and you can taste a glass before committing, which is either hospitality or smart salesmanship, probably both. The cooking runs to big, unapologetic Gallic territory: bone marrow butters, veal kidneys, whole fish in salt crust for two. The kind of food that makes you order another glass without noticing you've done it.

    Classic Belgian Bistro

  6. North Sea fish and natural wines are the bedrock of this bright, elegant bistro in central Bruges. The menu leans hard into the coast, with langoustines, scallops, and whatever else came off the boats, given a subtle, sometimes spicy edge that keeps things interesting. The kind of seafood bistro where the wine list gets equal attention to the catch, and nobody at the table seems to be in a hurry to leave.

  16. Rank 16. Biestro H-eat

    Modern Flemish Bistro

The wood-burning stove in the corner isn't decorative; the open kitchen runs on actual fire, and you can watch the whole operation from your seat. This friendly bistro in Bornem earns its Michelin Bib Gourmand with set menus that slide Flemish classics toward Asian and Mediterranean territory without making a fuss about it. The portions are generous in a way that feels deliberate rather than accidental, and the front of house runs like someone actually enjoys the job.

  18. Rank 16. De Maurice à Olivier

    Parisian Bistro

You walk past the father's newsagents to reach the son's bistro, which tells you something about the family dynamic. De Maurice à Olivier is a Parisian-style neighborhood restaurant where classic French cooking is taken seriously: rooted, precise, and not especially interested in being fashionable. A well-stocked wine cellar and a serious selection of cigars and whiskeys round things out. The Michelin Guide has awarded it a Bib Gourmand.

  19. Rank 19. Bar Bulot Zedelgem

    Belgian Bistro

The farmstead that housed the legendary Hertog Jan has been reborn as a polished brasserie, with a lush garden terrace and an interior that leans hard into the elegant side of casual. The kitchen's thing is Franco-Belgian classics stripped to their essence, sole meunière, hanger steak, the kind of food that sounds simple until it lands in front of you and you understand it wasn't.

  22. Rank 19. Le Saint Boniface

    European Bistro

Red-and-white checked tablecloths, vintage photos, biscuit tins on shelves, and jazz drifting through a room where the tables are close enough to follow your neighbor's argument. This Ixelles bistro runs on country cooking from Lyon, the Basque Country, and Southwest France, the kind of food built around things like foie gras terrine and calf's head with gribiche. Hearty, unfussy, and priced like it means it.

  23. Rank 19. Père et Mère

    Traditional Bistro

A family bistro on Diksmuide's main square where two generations still share the floor: the founders pop in to help their children keep the place running, which tells you everything about the spirit here. The cooking is old-school Belgian, the kind that takes rabbit, prunes, and local beer entirely seriously. Prices stay deliberately modest, the room runs warm, and the fish soup alone could justify the detour.

  24. Orbit Bistro is a French-ish neo-bistro where the dramatic mound of whipped butter on the counter gets more quiet staring than most paintings. Wood-panelled walls and candles on every table do the date-night work, and the curved half-booths at the back give you a view of the whole room. Fried chicken arrives topped with caviar, which is the kind of thing a neo-bistro does, and the butter sauce on the roast chicken ends up on everything else.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
