  1. Rank 890. Restaurante Bar Montejo

    Yucatecan Cantina

  2. Rojo Bistrot is a corner French bistro in Condesa where Amélie posters and vintage Perrier ads cover the walls, in case you forgot what country you were pretending to be in. The menu runs on duck, escargots, and onion soup under a lid of melted cheese. Younger locals share the room with ladies in pearls and Chanel-ish jackets, and jazzy pop covers keep things low enough for conversation. Dinner here costs less than a flight to Lyon.

  3. Rank 890. Xel-Há

    Yucatecan

Xel-Há is a Condesa dining room with white tablecloths, branded napkins, and waiters in bow ties, which sets expectations for stuffy and overpriced that the menu cheerfully ignores. The cooking leans Yucatecan, the soccer match plays on several TVs, and a solid lunch runs about $20. It's busy and family-friendly, yet somehow there's always a table for a big group, which feels like a small miracle.

  8. A 1940s mansion in Polanco sets the stage for this multi-floor Spanish restaurant, where the kitchen takes an updated approach to the cuisine rather than a museum-piece one. The chef runs a seven-course tasting menu alongside a broader à la carte selection. Thursday through Saturday the kitchen stays open until 2 a.m., which is either a bonus or the whole point, depending on your evening.

  43. The patio at this all-day restaurant and café opens onto Plaza San Jacinto, which on Saturdays turns into one of the city's better artisan markets and supplies a steady stream of browsers to watch over a glass from the long wine list. The menu moves from enchiladas to pasta to salmon without breaking a sweat, the bread is baked in-house, and the chocolate dessert has regulars planning ahead.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
