The 18 Best Taquerias in Mexico

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best taquerias in Mexico, according to the experts: Condé Nast Traveler, The Infatuation, and the Michelin Guide have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. El Turix comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Tijuana and Mexico City.

More Less

Los Milanesos Taqueria and Taquería Honorio hold the next two places. Eater shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with The Infatuation next.

  1. Rank 1. El Turix

    Taqueria

The cochinita pibil comes out electric orange from achiote, and it will absolutely stain your shirt. El Turix is a bare-bones Yucatan taqueria in Polanco with a steel counter, no real seating, and a line that parks itself outside regardless. The slow-roasted pork lands on panuchos or in tacos, topped with pickled red onion. Office workers in loosened ties eat next to construction crews, which is about as reliable a quality signal as any.

  2. The orange awning and the smell of frying pork will find you before you find this taqueria in a quiet residential corner of Álvaro Obregón. The specialty is Milanese-style tacos, breaded cutlets sliced into strips and piled onto corn tortillas, finished with lime and house-made green or red salsa. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks. Bring cash, and don't plan anything too athletic afterward.

  3. Rank 3. Taquería Honorio

    Yucatecan Taqueria

A street stand that went from local fixture to international talking point after visiting chefs and food tourists discovered it mid-Tulum-boom and proceeded to flood Instagram. The draw is Yucatecan cooking built around Maya recaudos, the spiced pastes that color and season cochinita pibil, relleno negro de pavo, and slow-roasted suckling pig. Pull up, order, eat standing.

  4. Rank 4. Cariñito Tacos

    Southeast Asian Taqueria

Tacos served on dried corn husks instead of plates is a reasonable signal that this Roma Norte taqueria is doing something different. The white-tiled counter runs with quiet efficiency, and everything is made to order, which you can watch happening if you linger before grabbing a seat outside. The menu pulls from Southeast Asia as readily as Mexico, folding hoisin, sriracha, and nam jim jaew into flour tortillas without making a fuss about it.

    The awards

  5. A bright yellow banner and a beach umbrella on Avenida Satélite mark this street taco stand, where the specialty is tacos de canasta, steamed until the tortillas go slick and translucent with the fillings' oils. Chaya and egg, red mole with chicken, chicharron prensado, all arriving in that particular sweaty, fragrant glow that only steaming produces. Order five and a fresh juice and call it a midmorning plan.

  6. Rank 5. Bomba

    Yucatecan

A roadside taco cart run by Indigenous Mayan vendors, open early for the crowd that knows guisados are a morning thing. Corn tortillas come loaded with lomitos stewed in tomato, carne molida, or cochinita, and the habanera salsa is the kind of hot that makes you pause and then go back for more. Tortas and empanadas round things out. Get there before the guisados run out, which they will.

  7. Rank 5. El Socio Naiz

    Modern Taqueria

El Socio Naiz is an open-air taquería downtown, well outside the hotel zone, where the tacos come off a spinning trompo and the salsas arrive in little mezcal glasses, which is the kind of detail that makes you check whether you're allowed to drink them. The menu gets playful with octopus chicharrón and a campechana built on grilled sirloin and chistorra. Cocktails come with a chamoy rim. The Infatuation lists it among its best in Cancún.

  8. Linoleum floors, bare yellow walls, and a trim menu that hasn't tried to impress anyone in years. This no-frills taco counter serves fish, fried or grilled, on homemade tortillas, with a toppings bar of coleslaw, pico de gallo, guacamole, and salsas so you can build as you see fit. Quesadillas are there if you wander off-script. Cheap, fast, and genuinely close to the water it's sourcing from.

  9. Rank 5. Tacos Gardenias

    Baja Taqueria

  10. Late-night taco stand in downtown Tulum, where the al pastor comes off the trompo bright orange, tender, and topped with pineapple, onion, cilantro, and salsa. The tortas run the same meat, and the real move is a shared fried-hash combo cooked on a flattop, arriving with corn tortillas so you can build your own. In a neighborhood full of marquesita carts aimed squarely at tourists, El Tio has been the locals' detour for a long time.

  11. Rank 5. Taqueria El Fogon

    Mexico City Taqueria

Plastic tables on the sidewalk, enormous wedges of lime, and a menu that runs from tacos al pastor to cecina without a single gourmet flourish in sight. This is a no-frills taqueria doing Mexico City-style tacos alongside quesadillas on flour tortillas and, on weekends, a pot of pozole in red or white broth. It's the kind of place that makes lunch, dinner, and a late-night snack feel like equally reasonable options.

  12. Rank 12. Tacos Aaron

    Tijuana Taqueria

  13. Rank 12. Tacos El Nuevo Poblano

    Tijuana Taqueria

  14. A taco cart under an aluminum carport, running on a flaming barbecue grill and ambition, with mesquite-grilled beef shoulder and adobada shaved from a vertical spit. This is a street-style taqueria serving tacos, tostadas, mulitas, tortas, and costras, those fried cheese envelopes that sound excessive until you have one. The quesadilla de asada, a big handmade corn tortilla loaded with melted cheese and carne asada, is the thing people split and then wish they hadn't.

  15. A seafood taco truck in Altabrisa where the smoked marlin alone justifies the detour. The spicy shrimp tacos come loaded with plump shrimp, creamy sauce, and melted cheese, and the Poseidon, a toasted flour tortilla piled with both shrimp and marlin, is the kind of thing that requires two hands and a plan. Tijuana takes its seafood tacos seriously, and this truck holds its own among the many locals who do too.

  16. Stainless steel bain marie pots line the counter here, each one holding a different guisado you point at before it gets spooned onto a corn tortilla. This is a weekday morning taqueria, the kind where regulars arrive knowing exactly what they want and the line moves fast. Mole con pollo, cabeza en salsa verde, nopales con carne, birria de res, the options shift but the format never does. Been around forever, and the Zona Norte original draws a loyal crowd through early afternoon.

  17. The car wash is long gone, but the torta it inspired has become a signature of Tijuana street food. A flour-dusted pambazo roll gets spread with mayo and guacamole, then packed with mesquite-grilled carne asada that's been chopped and finished in a steam pan, topped with pickled tomato and purple onion. It's a counter-service sandwich spot with a local mythology to match, the kind of place where ordering anything else would miss the point entirely.

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
