The Best French Food in Mexico

Sections

The best French food in Mexico, according to the experts: MexBest, the Michelin Guide, and Eater have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Vigneron comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Mexico City and Playa del Carmen.

More Less

Bakéa and Havre 77 hold the next two places. AAA and MB100 show up on more of this list than any other guide.

  1. Rank 1. Vigneron

    Contemporary French

A sliver of a room in Roma Norte, all dark wood and candlelight, with just enough tables that you'll feel like you got in on something. Vigneron is a contemporary French restaurant where the menu stays short and the wine list, mostly European, runs long. The Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks: this is the kind of cooking that shows off without announcing itself. Share everything you can.

  2. Rank 2. Bakéa

    Basque French

  3. A pianist plays while waiters glide past in a room that has clearly decided romance is nonnegotiable. This is formal French fine dining inside a Cancún resort, built around foie gras, black truffle, lobster, and caviar, the whole luxurious lineup. The desserts lean modern against classic technique. Afterward, the lounge takes over with live entertainment and nightcaps. It holds an AAA Five Diamond distinction.

  9. Superette is a relaxed creperie on the quieter, residential side of Condesa, where the neo-colonial architecture does more showing off than anyone inside. Buckwheat galettes come with a hard apple cider, and the classic with ham, egg, and comté is the one to order. It's one of the cheaper places in the neighborhood to sit down for a proper bite, so the stroll over costs you almost nothing.

  10. Rank 11. Lempicka Bistro

    Mexican-inspired French

  11. Rojo Bistrot is a corner French bistro in Condesa where Amélie posters and vintage Perrier ads cover the walls, in case you forgot what country you were pretending to be in. The menu runs on duck, escargots, and onion soup under a lid of melted cheese. Younger locals share the room with ladies in pearls and Chanel-ish jackets, and jazzy pop covers keep things low enough for conversation. Dinner here costs less than a flight to Lyon.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
