The best bakeries in Mexico, according to the experts: MexBest, The Infatuation, and the Michelin Guide have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Saint comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Mexico City.

More Less

Panadería Rosetta and Rubas Bakery hold the next two places. The Infatuation shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Eater next.

  1. Elena Reygadas runs this snug European-style bakery in Roma Norte, and the guava and ricotta Danish alone explains the line out the door. In a city where the standard pan dulce leans dry and margarine-heavy, the pastries here pull from an Italian-inflected pantry: airy conchas, chocolate-glazed donuts, focaccia, rustic loaves. Come early, order a coffee, then pick up a box to take to a park.

  2. A 1940s casita in San José del Cabo's Arts District, with umbrella tables out front strung under papel picado, doing the kind of all-day bakery-bistro work that makes mornings feel optional. Conchas, croissants, and donuts fill the display case, and the coffee counter handles the rest. Things get more serious toward brunch, when wood-fired pizza and chilaquiles in morita chile sauce join the mix. The Michelin Guide has taken note.

  3. The smell of fresh pastry settles the question before you've read the menu. Bakers is a coffee-and-bakery spot on the Roma Norte and Condesa border, with a sleek wood-paneled interior and sidewalk seating that slows the morning down. Everything is made in-house, baguettes lined up on the back shelves and a pastry case full of viennoiserie. The guava and cheese cruffin, when it's around, is an argument for staying in the neighborhood all day.

  4. Rank 6. Italdo Pasteleria

    Italian Patisserie

A boutique pastelería in La Veleta where the conchas are made with French butter and the croissants are filled with frangipane. The chef behind it spent years in Michelin-starred kitchens under heavyweights like Gordon Ramsay and Pierre Gagnaire before deciding Tulum suited him better. The desserts sometimes look more like botanical specimens than pastries, vanilla beans and cacao fruits rendered in cream and chocolate with unsettling accuracy.

  5. Rank 7. Çuina

    Mexican

  6. Rank 7. Ficelle

    French Bakery

  7. Rank 7. Marne

    French Bakery

  8. Rank 7. Mätre

    Sourdough Bakery

  9. Rank 7. Pancracia

    Mexican Bakery

  10. Rank 7. Panina

    Bakery

A sourdough bakery and cafe on a quiet cobblestone street a few blocks from the tourist scrum of Zona Centro. The chef and baker runs the women-led kitchen and is known to geek out over bread with anyone willing to pull up a chair. Pastries, foamy lattes, and a relaxed outdoor terrace make it an easy morning stop, the kind where a simple avocado toast with bacon and poached egg earns its place on the menu.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
