The 100 Best Places to Eat and Stay in Portland ME

Sections

Tap to add or drop a section. At least one stays on.

The best places to eat and stay in Portland ME, according to the experts: Food & Wine, AAA, and the Forbes Travel Guide have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Mr. Tuna comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Portland.

More Less

White Barn Inn Restaurant and Zu Bakery hold the next two places. The Portland Press Herald shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with the James Beard Awards next.

  1. The chef here built a following on a hand roll cart before graduating to this tight, buzzy sushi shop on Middle Street, where almost everything comes from Gulf of Maine fishermen. Named a Food & Wine Best New Chef and a James Beard semifinalist, Jordan Rubin treats local seafood as a point of pride rather than a compromise. The tuna de tigre, a New York Times-noted dish, makes a pretty strong case for staying close to home.

  3. The open kitchen here runs on live fire: a wood-burning oven, a grill, and a turnspit that turns out roasted pork while chefs pull oysters and raid a glass-windowed vegetable humidor in full view of the dining room. It's a New England restaurant in a high-ceilinged brick warehouse above the Old Port, and a James Beard Outstanding Restaurateur winner. The rope-cultured mussels in garlic-almond butter are the kind of thing regulars order without looking up.

  4. Rank 4. Leeward

    Italian

Warm ochre walls, bookshelves stacked with dried flowers, and handmade pasta that regularly lands a James Beard nomination: this cozy Italian restaurant on Free Street is the kind of neighborhood spot that somehow becomes a national conversation. The chef's shapes and sauces pull from whatever local producers are doing well right now, and the wine program is its own reason to linger. Settle in and watch Portland's Arts District do its thing out the window.

  7. Old wooden beams from the original building were milled into the chef's counter, which is where you want to sit at this New England French restaurant if you can get it. The menu runs refined and a little lusty at once, French technique laid over serious local sourcing. The New York Times and Esquire both noticed when it opened, and the room has been full ever since.

  8. The building used to be a Dairy Queen, and the kitchen leans into that legacy rather than running from it. Woodford F&B is a neighborhood restaurant where the chef, a James Beard nominee, turns out unfussy food with serious technique: charcuterie with a devoted following, a brisket burger stacked high, a croque-monsieur that earns the trouble. The room is relaxed enough that no one's performing, but the cooking suggests someone back there very much is.

  11. The burnt banana coconut tapioca pudding is a little ugly and completely beside the point, which is almost the whole story of this Vietnamese restaurant on Washington Ave. The menu runs bright and chili-forward, with shrimp cakes wrapped in butter lettuce and twice-cooked eggplant that quietly steals the table. A James Beard nominee for Best Chef: Northeast and a New York Times Restaurant List pick, it draws the kind of crowd that orders everything.

  12. Wood-burning fireplaces, whirlpool tubs, and antique-furnished rooms spread across a cluster of restored barns and cottages on the Maine coast. This is an inn in the old sense: unhurried, a little formal, the kind of place where afternoon tea by the fire feels like the obvious plan. Bikes are available for riding along the coast, there's a stone pool, a spa, and a candlelit restaurant on the property that guests tend not to leave.

  14. Every one of the 226 rooms has a private terrace facing the Atlantic, which makes the clifftop setting feel less like a amenity and more like the whole point. This is a sprawling luxury resort on 70 acres of rough Maine shoreline, with an ocean-facing spa, outdoor pools, and a Forbes Four Star and a Michelin Key to its name. The crowd skews well-heeled road-tripper; the vibe is coastal grandeur with enough square footage that it never feels crowded.

  15. Rank 15. Scales

  16. Rank 18. Chaval

    Spanish

Chaval is a Spanish-leaning restaurant on Pine Street that runs on Maine ingredients with French habits tucked in, so a local pork chop can show up wearing a shellfish cream sauce and nobody complains. The rooms are warm, there's a patio for when the weather cooperates, and the pastry side of the house means dessert is part of the plan, not an afterthought. Dress for a nice dinner, not a lobster bib.

  17. Rank 18. Douro

    Portuguese

Named for the Portuguese river and wine region, Douro is a relaxed, all-day seafood restaurant on Portland's Eastern Waterfront that filters Portugal through a Maine lens. The overlap is convenient: both places are serious about what comes out of the water. The kitchen leans into that with raw bar work, sardine toasts, and cataplana, the classic Portuguese seafood stew. The room is unhurried, the menu is coastal in the best bilingual sense.

  18. Rank 18. Terlingua

    Barbecue

A wool Mexican blanket hangs in the vestibule, which tells you most of what you need to know before you've even ordered. Terlingua is a neighborhood barbecue shop where the smoked meats drift Southwest and Caribbean, so the menu lands somewhere between Texas pit stop and something you'd find closer to the Gulf. The polished concrete bar fills fast, the cornbread has jalapeño and honey, and breakfast runs all day.

  19. A mushroom breakfast taco that Melissa Clark put on the New York Times list of best dishes eaten across the country in 2024 will tell you what kind of neighborhood restaurant this is. Ocotillo does scratch Tex-Mex in a city not especially known for it, and the housemade salsa macha alone justifies the detour. Brunch draws the loyal crowd, but the cooking has the kind of quiet confidence that makes you wonder what else you've been missing.

  20. Rank 21. The Honey Paw

    Modern Pan-Asian Noodle Shop

Communal tables and mismatched plates set the tone at this noodle bar on Middle Street, where the menu wanders confidently through Asia with a New England detour. Lobster wontons land in seafood curry; smoked lamb khao soi shows up alongside whatever happens to be coming off the wok that day. The room is tight, which concentrates the energy nicely. A James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Northeast in 2024.

  21. Six rooms in a residential house a few blocks from the Danforth Street sibling, this Lark Hotels guest house holds a Michelin Key and wears its size lightly. Vintage furnishings and local artwork give it the feel of staying with someone who has better taste than you do. The neighborhood is quiet, walkable, and genuinely residential, which means you'll pass actual Portlanders on the way to breakfast.

    The awards

  22. The name nods to the Prohibition speakeasy that once operated in the basement, which is a better origin story than most boutique hotels can manage. Lark Hotels gave the old house a full renovation, and their signature formula is intact: photogenic rooms, genuinely comfortable beds, and a walkable neighborhood that makes you feel like a local who somehow has nicer lodgings than anyone else on the block. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  25. Rank 26. Sur Lie

    Eclectic Tapas Bar

A mahogany bar anchors one end while a giant abstract mural anchors the other, and in between, marina lights hang above wooden booths full of regulars who clearly regard this as their personal dining room. Sur Lie is a tapas-style New American spot where small, eclectic plates rotate through whatever the kitchen finds interesting. A James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Hospitality, the warmth here is structural, not performed.

  28. Rank 32. Miyake

    Classic Japanese

The blonde wood sushi bar is the room's focal point, and the chefs behind it move like they've been doing this forever. Miyake is a classic Japanese restaurant on Fore Street where the kitchen fuses traditional sushi with French and Italian technique and leans hard into Maine seafood. Every seat fills fast, and the counter draws regulars who know exactly what they're ordering before they sit down.

  30. Rank 32. Papi

    Puerto Rican Cocktail Bar

Mahogany double doors shipped from Puerto Rico anchor the entrance to this Puerto Rican cocktail bar in the Old Port, where salsa and merengue fill the room and the tiled bar is the obvious place to sit. The drinks lean inventive, the food is serious enough to linger over, and the whole thing has a regional Spirited Award to its name. Portland has seafood shacks covered; this is doing something else entirely.

  31. Schulte & Herr is a small, low-key German restaurant on Cumberland Avenue where fresh rye bread and a paprika-heavy quark spread arrive before you've finished sitting down. It's BYOB with no corkage fee, so the real planning happens at a wine shop beforehand. The plates are homestyle and generous, built around things like sauerbraten that sends its gravy into the bread dumplings. Expect to leave needing a nap, and not minding.

  32. The awards

  33. The room seats maybe thirty people and fills up fast, tucked between the West End and Parkside in a spot that looks like a classic neighborhood tavern and then proceeds to serve broiled scallop with caviar and hollandaise. Small plates anchor the menu, the wine list has a point of view, and the cocktails are sharper than the setting lets on. Condé Nast Traveler put it on their Portland list, which surprises no one who's been.

  34. Sitting on the cobblestone end of Fore Street in Portland's Old Port, this boutique hotel leans into a nautical theme without going full lighthouse gift shop. Rooms run contemporary-classic, with large soaking tubs in many bathrooms and fireplaces in some suites. BlueFin handles fresh North Atlantic seafood on-site, though the Old Port's bar and restaurant scene starts essentially at the front door.

    The awards

  35. A converted textile mill with original worn brick and warehouse ceilings sets the tone for this 33-room luxury boutique hotel in Biddeford, a riverside town that doesn't get nearly enough attention. The design swings between clean modern lines and Art Deco flourishes without losing the thread. A rooftop pool, lobby bar, café, and a brewery-restaurant round it out. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

    The awards

  36. The former home of the Portland Press Herald spent nearly a century printing the news; now it's a 110-room boutique hotel in the Old Port where the newspaper theme is more than wallpaper. The building itself does the heavy lifting, so the vintage journalist decor reads like atmosphere rather than concept. Selected by the Michelin Guide, it's a Marriott Autograph Collection property, which means independent spirit with loyalty points attached.

    The awards

  37. A historic sea captain's house anchors this boutique hotel on the edge of Kennebunkport's compact town center, with eleven modern cabin suites spread across the surrounding grounds. The design, by Elder & Ash, lands somewhere between old Maine and contemporary coastal, which is a trickier balance than it sounds in a town better known for Bush family compounds and old-money shingle cottages. A Michelin Key holder.

    The awards

  38. A cluster of Federal-era sea captains' homes on a quiet, tree-lined street, the Captains Collection operates as an upscale bed-and-breakfast in what might be the most tastefully patrician small town in New England. Kennebunkport has been a presidential retreat for generations, which tells you something about the pace. Galleries and antique shops are a short walk away, and the Michelin Guide awarded it a Key.

    The awards

  39. The awards

  40. A six-room B&B tucked into a stately red-brick Georgian house in Portland's quieter, more residential West End. The rooms are handsome and distinct, the décor classic without feeling like a period piece, and the cooked-to-order breakfast is a proper morning. An automated wine bar is an odd and welcome touch, and afternoon cheese boards keep things civilized. Downtown is a short walk northeast when you need it.

    The awards

  41. Regards is a brunchy, ever-changing restaurant on Congress Street in the Arts District, where the menu wanders between Japan, Mexico, and California while keeping its produce stubbornly local. The booths are chic, the natural wines and agave spirits do most of the talking, and the mezcal Negroni with strawberry Campari suggests the bar has opinions. Bon Appétit put it on its list of America's Best New Restaurants.

  42. A block from one of Southern Maine's most beloved sandy beaches, this Colonial Revival inn in Scarborough's small waterfront district sits twenty minutes shy of Portland. Guest rooms lean hard into seaside style, with vibrant colors and vintage postcard illustrations, while the details stay modern boutique. The on-site restaurant, Shade, serves oysters and fresh seafood on a covered porch with wine on draft.

    The awards

  43. A few minutes from Portland in Cape Elizabeth, this coastal resort sits close enough to the water that the sea breeze does real work, even in summer when the air conditioning is technically doing its job. Rooms and suites run to gas fireplaces and heated floors, which sounds like a sales pitch until January arrives. The style is contemporary-classic without the stiffness that phrase usually implies, and the Michelin Guide has it among their selected hotels.

    The awards

  44. Getting to this inn requires a ferry, which is either a dealbreaker or the entire point. The island has no cars to speak of, and the inn leans into that with no TVs or phones in the rooms, just vintage furniture, local art, and views. Bikes, tennis, golf, and charter boats fill the days, and the restaurant runs on lobster, mussels, and produce from nearby farms. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

  47. A six-room B&B in a Colonial-era house that has Ralph Waldo Emerson quotes on the walls, which is either charming or a lot depending on your relationship with transcendentalism. The inn has been around forever and shows it in the best way: pine floors from the original build, original architectural details, and modern bathrooms that know when to stay quiet. Breakfast, a lending library, and an honor bar round out the thoughtful extras.

  50. The check-in desk is a cocktail bar, which sets the tone for what The Nevada is doing. This 21-room motel on Long Sands Beach has been gut-renovated by a husband-and-wife team, and the L-shaped building now runs art deco through a nautical filter: clean lines, ocean views, private terraces on every room. The beach is right there. Checking in early, staying late, and ordering another drink all feel equally reasonable.

    The awards

  51. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Nubble Lighthouse from every room, which means the view does most of the decorating at this 18-room boutique hotel on the York coast. A former motor lodge, now redesigned into something that feels genuinely considered, with private patios, coastal-modern interiors, a pool, sauna, and beach access. Bikes and yoga classes are on offer when staring at the Atlantic stops being enough.

  54. Rank 61. Calafia

    Cantina

Calafia is a pink-lit cantina in Portland's West End, the sort of room where everyone looks like they've had a good week. The menu is Mexican by way of Baja, San Diego, and the Maine coast, so the fish tacos and the Jonah crab churros are both doing local work. Cocktails lean agave, including a tequila take on the sweetened condensed milk citrus smoothie. Expect dinner prices, and a dress code of whatever flatters pink light.

  55. Rank 61. Dry Dock

    Seafood

Right on Maine Wharf in the Old Port, this two-story seafood restaurant occupies a renovated 1920s building that still has nautical maps on the walls and a faint whiff of Ye Olde New England charm. The kitchen takes old-school coastal staples and quietly dismantles them, running a raw bar alongside ceviches and preparations that would confuse anyone expecting a paper basket of fried clams. Condé Nast Traveler named it among Portland's fifteen best restaurants.

  56. Rank 61. Magissa

    Contemporary Greek

Magissa is a bright, easygoing Greek taverna in East Bayside, a neighborhood with more breweries than seems strictly necessary. Dinner runs on meze like htipiti and skordalia, scooped up with warm pita, plus grilled lamb and an ouzo cake for dessert. The drinks list leans into mastiha, sumac lemonade, and a local bitters people in Portland talk about like a sports team. Eater has it on its list of the city's best.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
