The best restaurants in Berkeley, according to the experts: The New York Times, Michelin Guide, and San Francisco Chronicle have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Chez Panisse comes out on top.

More Less

Ippuku and Vik's Chaat hold the next two places. San Francisco Chronicle shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Michelin Guide next.

Departments

  1. Alice Waters put her name on California cooking before it was a category, and the wood-burning oven at the back of this Craftsman dining room has been the argument ever since. Downstairs runs a four-course fixed menu that changes daily with whatever is at peak season; the upstairs café goes à la carte at friendlier prices. No two visits are the same, which is either a feature or a mild anxiety depending on your personality.

  2. Rank 2. Ippuku

    Japanese

Across from a college library, this wood-paneled izakaya has tatami nooks where you remove your shoes and low tables that make the outside world evaporate. The yakitori bar at the back glows with binchotan smoke, and the chicken runs deep, from thigh oysters to knee cartilage. The shochu list is one of the longer ones you'll find anywhere in the Bay Area. A Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  3. Orders get called out over a crackling intercom at this warehouse-sized Indo canteen and grocery store in Berkeley, where metal trays and disposable sporks set the tone immediately. The chaat is the reason to come, those hollow puffs and tamarind-drenched bites that make the whole elaborate category make sense. Thalis, tandoori chicken, and a glass case of colorful sweets fill out the picture. The San Francisco Chronicle has it in their Top 100 Bay Area restaurants.

  4. Rank 4. Iyasare

    Japanese

A heated patio and a buzzing dining room on Berkeley's Fourth Street, where Japanese technique meets Northern California produce in small plates built for sharing. The chef comes from Japan's Tohoku region, where winters demand serious comfort food, and that instinct carries through a menu that rotates with the season. The Michelin Guide has it selected. Sake, local wine, and creative cocktails all hold their own on the drinks list.

  5. The smell of saffron hits you before you reach the door, which is a reasonable promise to make. La Marcha is a Spanish tapas and paella restaurant on San Pablo where the jamón legs hanging in the back corner set the decorative tone. Paellas come in enough variations to anchor a group, and the happy hour draws solo diners to the L-shaped bar for wine and free bites. Rustic, lively, and never quiet.

  6. Rank 6. Comal

    Mexican

The large flat comal griddles that give this Berkeley restaurant its name sit in plain view in the open kitchen, which sets the tone nicely. It's a lively Mexican spot with an industrial-chic room, a heated back patio for year-round dining, and a serious tequila and mezcal list that keeps the noise level honest. The Michelin Bib Gourmand crowd tends to arrive early and order the guacamole before they've opened the menu.

  7. Pink papel picados hang overhead at this counter-service Mexican spot tucked into a Berkeley shopping complex, where the line at the limeade counter is a permanent fixture no matter the hour. Regulars run through chilaquiles at breakfast and sopes by lunch without glancing at the menu. The enchiladas come doused in a smoky guajillo-tomatillo sauce, and the quesadillas with kabocha squash and pecan sauce read more quietly ambitious than a strip-mall taqueria has any obligation to be.

  8. Rank 8. The Cultured Pickle Shop

    Vegetarian American

Rows of cloudy jars exhaling tiny bubbles line the production kitchen at this small-batch pickle shop and weekend rice-bowl counter in Berkeley. Saturday and Sunday bring a three-course menu built around a maximalist rice bowl piled with the shop's latest ferments: kimchis, citrusy pickles, miso-braised greens. Drinks run to yuzu kombucha or warm ginger amazake. It may be the most Berkeley restaurant of all time, which is saying something.

  9. Rank 9. Fava

    Middle Eastern

A lunch window on Vine Street where the herbs arrive in what can only be described as quantities. The team behind it came up through Chez Panisse, and their California produce fixation reads clearly in the Middle Eastern menu: falafel with a serious crunch, flatbreads buried in mint and dill, yogurt spiked with broccoli and dill. Takeout only, which keeps things honest. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the best Berkeley and best Bay Area Middle Eastern spots.

  10. Rank 9. Lemat

    Ethiopian

Woven Messob baskets hang from the ceiling at this Ethiopian restaurant on Adeline, and the room is clearly built for a party, with a long bar, plush chairs, and a fully adjustable lighting rig that suggests someone once had serious ambitions for the space. Order the meat and veggie combo and let the kitchen do the rest. The 100% teff injera crumbles a little differently than you might expect, which is its own small education.

  11. Hunanese cooking in Berkeley, built around peppers and a kitchen with a particular way with fish. The poached fillets arrive with green peppercorns and pickled chiles that mean business, and a cracked coconut on the side functions as both a prop and a practical necessity. Portions run large at this casual, share-everything Chinese restaurant, and the sticky rice steamed with pork ribs and corn has developed something of a following.

  12. A wok that produces real smoky hei on Indo-Chinese noodles is a good sign you're not at a standard curry house. Munch India is a casual South Asian restaurant in Berkeley that draws from India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, with California produce and the occasional Japanese ingredient folded into the mix. The menu rotates monthly, kebabs go over hardwood charcoal, and everything is available for takeout and delivery.

  13. Hat Yai-style fried chicken is the reason to know this casual Berkeley Thai spot, where a rice flour batter does double duty as marinade and delivers a thin, shattering crust topped with fried shallots. You order from a touch screen, the staff will walk you through the menu, and the sweet chile sauce that comes alongside is fine, but the prik nam pla is the move.

  15. Rank 15. El Mono

    Peruvian

The spiral-tailed monkey painted on one wall gives the place its name and its vibe: a cheerful Peruvian restaurant with wood accents and geometric light fixtures that somehow feels both casual and considered. The antojitos trio is a good way in, landing beef hearts, jumbo corn, and causa on the table before you've made any real decisions. The San Francisco Chronicle named it one of Berkeley's best restaurants.

  16. A small French sandwich shop on Cedar Street where the main event is a buttermilk-fried chicken cutlet on a Semifreddi's roll, craggy-coated and topped with a creamy, spicy slaw. The potato puffs are the other reason people come, little pillowy spheres that have built a loyal following on their own. A few sidewalk tables exist, but most orders leave in a bag headed for Live Oak Park.

  17. Rank 15. Kiraku

    Japanese

The sweet potato brulée, a potato starch custard torched to a glassy crust, gives you a sense of how this Berkeley izakaya operates: familiar enough to land, unexpected enough to stay with you. The menu shifts constantly around a core of Japanese small plates, with daily specials that swing from nigiri to okonomiyaki depending on the chef's mood. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the best restaurants in Berkeley.

  18. A marinated pork spit spinning in the window pulls in foot traffic on MLK Way, which is basically the oldest form of advertising. This Chiapas-style taqueria in Berkeley orders you outside to pick up your al pastor, the ruby meat sweet and charred, with pineapple and a green oil salsa alongside. The chicken mole is a serious plate when you want it. Noah's Ark animals frolic across a mural on the wall, keeping things cheerful.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
