  1. The city skyline arrives like a third course at this long-running fine dining room tucked into the South Hill neighbourhood. Chef Keith Froggett has kept the kitchen classically French for decades, which means foie gras terrine and rabbit loin without apology or quotation marks. The coconut cream pie has its own fan club among regulars who have been making the reservation since before you were born.

  2. The front door is frosted top to bottom, the curtains are drawn, and there's no signage to speak of, which is a choice for a French bistro on Harbord. Inside, the narrow townhouse room runs on dim lighting and Italo-disco, and the cooking is smart, seasonal, and indulgent in the way that only a chef with Joe Beef on his résumé can pull off. Pommes dauphines are a fixture; everything else shifts with the microseason. Listed in Canada's 100 Best and the Michelin Guide.

  4. Rank 4. Lucie

    French

Pendant lights warm up an otherwise industrial dining room at this French restaurant on Yonge, where the kitchen's glass partition lets you glimpse the brigade without quite committing to a chef's table. The menu reads classically Gallic with a contemporary lean, and even the cocktail list has a French accent, which feels either chic or on the nose depending on your mood. AAA Four Diamonds.

  7. Rank 7. Alobar Yorkville

    French Cocktail Bar

The curved banquettes, low ceiling, and candlelight will convince you it's a cocktail bar, and the drinks are sharp enough to let you believe that as long as you like. The Alo Food Group's French-leaning restaurant in Yorkville leans hard on a charcoal grill and whatever came off a boat, with a wedge salad and banana cream pie showing up like old friends. The room hums with the particular contentment of people who've already ordered a second round.

  14. Rank 13. Parquet

    French

The patterned floors alone could justify the visit, but Parquet is a French bistro with a full case to make: marble bar, forest-green ceiling, wood-paneled walls, and a patio that turns Harbord Village into a small corner of Paris come summer. The cooking runs classically rich, cassoulet and steak frites with béarnaise sitting comfortably beside lighter surprises. The kind of room that fills early and empties late.

  15. Rank 13. Union

    French

Horseshoe bar at the entrance, rustic brick dining room in the back, and a chef who once worked a farm and still acts like it. Union is a French bistro on a stretch of Ossington shared with butchers and antique shops, and the menu moves with the seasons and local suppliers. The same care goes into an omelette as into steak frites, and if the floor gets busy, the chef may well deliver your plate himself.

  19. Leather banquettes, brass fixtures, and a room full of people who clearly planned their outfit around the reservation: La Banane is a French bistro on Ossington that leans into the romance of it all without apology. The kitchen plays with classic French forms, pairing one of the city's more ambitious raw bars with a cooking style that wanders toward yuzu and other detours. The banana cake with salted caramel ice cream has its own cult following.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
