  1. Reclaimed wood panels and colorful murals set the tone at this Indian street food spot on a busy stretch of Bayview, where the menu roams across regions rather than settling into one corner of the subcontinent. Chaats arrive lashed in chutney, thalis land as genuinely oversized platters, and the deep-fried cauliflower in sweet chili glaze has its own following. Servers talk you down from over-ordering, which is kind of them. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  2. The appam arrives loaded with fresh white crab meat, which sets the tone for what Bar Goa is doing: a Goan Indian cocktail bar on Toronto Street that takes the food as seriously as the drinks. The menu leans toward Goa's coastal cooking but wanders happily into Punjabi territory too, and the kitchen has a light enough touch to pull off the occasional whimsical plate without losing the plot. A seven-course tasting menu is available for the committed.

  3. Rank 3. Aanch

    Indian

A regional Indian restaurant on Wellington that hopscotches the subcontinent, from Chennai's deep-fried chicken 65 to the fiery vindaloos of Goa. The dining room is quiet and a little sleepy, which makes the kitchen's ambition feel like a pleasant surprise. The chef adds decorative swirls to the plates, a habit the food doesn't need but survives with its dignity intact. An old-school institution that keeps filling tables without making a fuss about it.

  4. Rank 4. Guru Lukshmi

    South Indian

A South Indian restaurant that takes up several bays of a Mississauga strip mall, which turns out to be a good call given the crowds it draws. The dosa menu alone runs to dizzying variety, from the giant Mysore Bhaji Dosa stuffed with aloo masala to more kinds than most of the region has ever attempted. Idlys, vadas, and uttapam come out fresh and fast, with sambar and chutneys alongside. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand.

  5. Paneer fans will appreciate that the name is a love letter to the ingredient, not a quirk. This sunny Indian restaurant in Kensington Market fills a window-wrapped room with sharable chaats, claypots, and curries seasoned with real precision. The butter chicken runs an almost painterly orange, and the coastal fish curry goes deep. Naan comes garlic-flecked and crisp, though you'll want rice too for the sauces. The servers narrate the menu at cheerful length. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  6. Hand-carved furniture, turmeric-colored booths, and archways that glow like something out of a Mughal painting make this Indian dining room in Yorkville feel pleasantly over-the-top in the best way. The kitchen matches the ambition, moving through dishes from across India with real precision, from clay-oven kebabs to a chicken biryani baked under puff pastry that has no interest in playing it safe. Dress accordingly; the room expects a little effort.

  7. Rank 6. Dil Se

    North Indian

Linen-draped tables and walls hung with colorful fabric signal that this is a sit-down Northern Indian restaurant on Roncesvalles, not a quick takeout stop. The kitchen runs on Mughlai tradition, and the menu reads like someone's grandmother's repertoire done with real care. Roncy locals fill the room on weeknights, which probably says enough. The Michelin Guide has it on their list.

  8. Rank 6. Tamarind

    Indian

Chettinad chicken tacos and panipuri shots sit on the same menu as a deeply spiced lamb Roganjosh, which tells you most of what you need to know about this colorful Indian restaurant in a Mississauga shopping district. Weekends tip into live music and dancing. The paneer in tomato-onion sauce is quietly serious. Servers will ask about your spice tolerance; say spicy, then order the raita anyway.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
