  1. Rank 1. DaNico

    Italian

The dining room occupies a former bank, and the high ceilings and long linen tablecloths suggest the space hasn't entirely forgotten its past grandeur. This is fine dining Italian, with a tasting menu or prix fixe built around Ontario produce and serious technique. Irreverent artwork keeps the mood from tipping into solemnity. The wine list leans deep Italian with growing Ontario representation. DaNico holds a Michelin star and placed third on 50 Top Italy's global list.

  2. Thirty-eight floors above Toronto Harbour, this fine-dining room does Modern Italian without the baroque excess, letting clean Mediterranean technique do the work. The tasting menu is the move, with pasta given the same seriousness as anything else on the plate. A Michelin star and a spot on the 50 Top Italy world list follow from somewhere, and the room knows it, carrying itself with a professionalism that feels earned rather than performed.

  3. Candlelight bouncing off cream walls and blond-oak tables sets the tone at Rob Rossi's luxe Italian restaurant, which holds a Michelin star and zeroes in on the seafood-forward cooking of Liguria rather than the usual Italian greatest-hits tour. The staff runs things with a quiet confidence that's either very reassuring or slightly unnerving, depending on your mood. A deep Italian wine list and a serious cocktail program mean there's no weak link in the evening.

  4. The pizza comes out charred and puffy, the kind that makes you rethink your original plan to order pasta instead. Giulietta is a classic Italian restaurant on College Street that somehow manages to feel both polished and genuinely neighbourhood, the sort of room where the team treats first-timers like regulars they just hadn't met yet. The Michelin Guide lists it, and Canada's 100 Best has it in the top 100.

  6. Rank 6. TOCA

    Traditional Italian

  7. Most of the space is a working kitchen supplying pasta to other restaurants around the city, which tells you something about priorities. The pasta shop itself opens for lunch only, for a few hours, with two or so pasta dishes on offer that day and not much else. Diners line the sidewalk on an industrial strip of Dovercourt Village to claim one of the scarce tables. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and the limited menu is the whole point.

  8. Jen Agg's Kensington Market restaurant holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, which tells you something about the short, shape-shifting menu: it changes often, leans on raw bar, house-made pasta, and whatever the kitchen feels like doing, and it overdelivers quietly. The room is loud and good-looking, the wine list is serious, and the crowd arrives dressed like they knew about this street before you did. Cash in your pocket optional; attitude is the currency here.

  10. Rank 11. 7 Enoteca

    Italian Wine Bar

Wood-burning ovens and banquettes that make every seat feel like a corner booth set the tone at this Italian wine bar in downtown Oakville. It's a sleek neighborhood spot where the pizzas come out blistered and puffy-edged, pasta leans toward things like trecce with crab, and the whole room moves with the low-key confidence of a place that doesn't need to prove anything. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and easy to see why the locals never quite leave.

  11. The marble bar running through the middle of this Dundas West wine bar is where solo diners tend to end up, treated like regulars whether or not they are. Enoteca Sociale is a Roman-style enoteca where nearly everything, bread, charcuterie, and the pastas that anchor the menu, is made in-house. The cacio e pepe draws the room's loyalty in a way that tends to settle arguments. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and the kind of place that fills up before you remember to book.

  13. Rank 14. Bar Vendetta

    Italian Cocktail Bar

White-and-orange tile, vintage posters, and a bar long enough to mean business set the tone at this narrow Italian wine bar on Dundas West. The kitchen is barely the size of a coat closet, which makes the from-scratch pastas and focaccia all the more baffling. Half the room is here for the surprisingly deep Italian wine list and has no intention of eating. The other half ordered the ricotta-stuffed cacio e pepe coil and isn't sharing.

  19. Rank 20. ARDO

    Southern Italian

Southern Italian cooking in a relaxed Old Toronto room, ARDO draws from Sicily and points south without making a fuss about it. The menu runs from chickpea fritters and arancini through orecchiette with sausage and rapini, and the seafood is handled with a light touch. Cannoli show up at the end, and they're the right call. A neighborhood place that happens to repay the trip from wherever you're coming from.

  20. Rank 20. Gia

    Plant-forward Italian

A narrow Trinity Bellwoods room with herringbone floors and exposed white brick, Gia is a plant-forward Italian restaurant where the house-made pasta, not the absence of meat, is the point. The mushroom agnolotti in butter and Parmigiano is the kind of dish that makes you forget you were tracking anything. Walk-ins can grab a seat at the walnut bar when reservations run out, which they tend to.

  21. Rank 20. Viaggio

    Italian

The tiramisu lands somewhere between a soufflé and a pancake, finished with espresso maple syrup and whipped mascarpone, and it's reason enough to visit on its own. This Italian neighborhood restaurant in a handsome old building could have coasted on red sauce and called it a night, but the kitchen puts smoked pastrami on pizza and tosses tagliolini in charred octopus with smoked dashi butter instead. A garden-lit deck completes the picture.

  24. The panzerotti here is a golden, deep-fried pocket that weighs close to two pounds, stuffed with mozzarella and pepperoni until it barely holds together. This no-frills Richmond Hill pizza joint has been around forever, and the regulars know to keep it simple. Wings and kitchen-sink salads round out the menu, but the panzerotti is the reason the place has a reputation that reaches well past the suburbs.

  25. Rank 25. Emmer

    Italian Bakery

The croissants here leave evidence, buttery and flaky enough that you'll be picking debris off your shirt for the rest of the morning. This Harbord Street bakery has built a following around laminated pastry and long-fermented sourdough, with savory Saturday specials that rotate weekly and draw a line of regulars who planned their whole day around it.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
