The Best Vietnamese Food in Canada

Sections

The best Vietnamese food in Canada, according to the experts: the Michelin Guide, The Infatuation, and Eater have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Anh and Chi comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Vancouver and Toronto.

More Less

Good Thief and Lunch Lady hold the next two places. Vancouver Magazine shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with the Michelin Guide next.

  1. Rank 1. Anh and Chi

    Vietnamese

A blue neon sign salvaged from the family restaurant that stood here for a generation anchors the bar of this sleek, midcentury-modern Vietnamese spot on Main Street. The brother-and-sister team behind it treat the menu as a love letter to Vietnam, running from pho to softshell crab salad to grilled prawn mousse with fresh herbs. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks.

  2. Rank 2. Good Thief

    Vietnamese

Pull back the velvet curtain and you're inside the world of nhậu, the Vietnamese tradition of drinking and eating with friends until things get blurry. Good Thief is a cocktail bar and restaurant on Main Street, the self-described rebellious younger sibling to Anh and Chi next door. The drinks lean boldly Vietnamese, the food runs from binchotan skewers to Dungeness crab garlic noodles, and the whole menu is designed to share. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

  4. Half the plants are fake, but the tropical-greenhouse-meets-nightclub decor on Fraser Street pulls it off anyway. This Vietnamese bistro draws a fashion-forward crowd with soul-warming pho, lemongrass skewers, and bun bo hue, every dish paired with a vegetarian counterpart. The vibe is energetic and the service disarmingly warm, which makes the whole place feel more West Hollywood than East Vancouver. A Michelin Selected pick.

  5. Directly across from the Four Seasons Centre, this polished Vietnamese restaurant fills its large dining room with booths, bar stools, and enough greenery to suggest someone actually tends it. The menu leans on traditional recipes, and the coconut curry, available with duck, chicken, or shrimp, gets most of the attention. The timing is convenient if you're catching a ballet and want something more interesting than a pre-show martini.

  6. The line forms before the door opens, which tells you most of what you need to know about this cash-only-on-weekends pho shop just off Queen Street. Big steaming bowls arrive fast and stay steaming, the rare beef version drawing regulars back in a way that menus with fifty options rarely manage. It's a no-frills room where the broth does the decorating. The Michelin Guide has it on their list.

  8. Rank 8. Crab Hot Lau (Kingsway)

    Northern Vietnamese

The rice field crab hot pot arrives with a broth so layered it borders on suspicious, built from noodles imported from the chef's hometown in northern Vietnam. This is a bustling, no-frills Vietnamese restaurant on Kingsway where the room runs loud and the food runs bold. Vancouver Magazine gave it the gold for Best Vietnamese, and the kitchen has since expanded to two more locations without the original losing any of its momentum.

  9. A slow-cooked beef broth that takes days to build is the reason chefs have been quietly directing people here for years. This tiny Vietnamese spot sits just off Leslieville's Old Chinatown, the kind of room where the pho does the talking. The broth runs earthy and aromatic, almost medicinal in the best sense, and the bowl arrives ready to customize with chiles, sprouts, and fresh lime.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
