The 19 Best Wine Bars in Canada

Sections

Tap another section to add it. All sections

The best wine bars in Canada, according to the experts: Air Canada, Vancouver Magazine, and The Infatuation have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Rabbit Rabbit comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Toronto and Montréal.

More Less

Buvette Scott and Vin Polisson hold the next two places. The Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Air Canada next.

  1. Rabbit Rabbit is a narrow, very mauve wine bar on Herald Street that plays vinyl and loosely commits to an Alice in Wonderland bit without making you wear ears. The menu runs eclectic, so tallow-fried chips and a green scallop aguachile share a table without apology, and the pasta could double as dinner. The wine list leans European with a few natural oddballs, and it was an Air Canada Best New Restaurants finalist.

  2. A copper-clad bar, vinyl on the turntable, and a menu that changes every day: Buvette Scott is a wine bar in the Saint-Jean-Baptiste neighbourhood where small plates and good pours are the whole point. Plan on four dishes, split them, and pick something from a wine list that leans local and stays affordable. The Michelin Guide awarded it a Bib Gourmand, which tracks for a room this unpretentious and this easy to return to.

  3. Rank 4. POP Wine Bar

    Natural Wine Bar

Oysters shucked to order, caviar service, artisanal cheese, and a wine list deep in small-production naturals, all of it happening in Saskatoon. This wine bar leans hard into the Parisian boîte fantasy, and the list rewards the curious: skin-contact wines from the Okanagan, odd co-ferments, bottles that traveled a long way to end up somewhere genuinely surprising. The cocktail side runs to very cold Martinis and milk punches. Canada's 100 Best ranks it among the country's top bars.

  4. Rank 5. 7 Enoteca

    Italian Wine Bar

Wood-burning ovens and banquettes that make every seat feel like a corner booth set the tone at this Italian wine bar in downtown Oakville. It's a sleek neighborhood spot where the pizzas come out blistered and puffy-edged, pasta leans toward things like trecce with crab, and the whole room moves with the low-key confidence of a place that doesn't need to prove anything. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, and easy to see why the locals never quite leave.

  5. Rank 5. Annette bar à vin

    Modern Wine Bar

A wine bar in a glass-and-steel former industrial building in the Angus Shops district, Annette draws the kind of crowd that actually reads the by-the-glass list before ordering. The wine program is the draw, deep on both serious vintages and accessible finds, but the seasonal small plates are built to share and hold their own. The Michelin Guide recognized it with a Bib Gourmand.

  6. Rank 7. Le Vin Papillon

    Natural Wine Bar

The wine list runs entirely to natural and biodynamic bottles, which tells you everything about what Little Burgundy bistro Le Vin Papillon is going for. It's a sharing-plates spot from the Joe Beef team next door, with a menu that shifts on the chefs' whims. The room is lively and genuinely welcoming, the kind of place where the Michelin Guide has taken notice without anyone seeming to have dressed up for the occasion.

  8. Family-style Italian in Niagara Falls, where the kitchen sends wave after wave of antipasto, pasta, and pizza to the table until everyone goes quiet. Think of it as a buffet that comes to you, which is a more civilized arrangement than anyone usually manages at a buffet. Solo diners or smaller appetites can order from the regular menu instead. The send-off is a little box of biscotti for the drive home, which is a genuinely Italian move.

  9. Rank 10. Bar Gobo

    Natural Wine Bar

The cooking comes out of a kitchenette tucked behind the bar, which tells you everything about Bar Gobo's priorities. It's a natural wine bar on Union Street where the pours run exclusively from small, hip producers and the room is about as fussy as its namesake root vegetable. A short prix fixe rotates with the seasons, and the flavors land with more clarity than the setting would suggest. No attitude from the staff, despite the very correct wine list.

  10. Globe lighting, forest green cushions, and gold-trim tables give this wine bar on Queen West a mid-century modern ease that makes an evening here feel deliberately unhurried. The menu has no particular allegiance to any cuisine, which turns out to be a feature: it exists to pace the wine list, not compete with it. A retail shop sits next door for when the bottle you're on becomes a problem you need to solve immediately.

  11. A small wine bar and restaurant in downtown Kitchener where the menu never stays still long enough to bore you. Dishes zigzag across flavors and influences with real confidence, pairing charred vegetables with mango cardamom mousse or roast duck with chimichurri and smoked cinnamon. The wine list leans into the unexpected in ways that match the kitchen's energy. The team is warm in the way that makes you stay for one more pour.

  12. Wine bottles ring the walls of this small, unhurried wine bar on Danforth, and the whole room has the warm sepia glow of a place that stopped trying to impress you the moment you walked in. The menu runs shorter than you'd expect, with more vegetables than a wine bar typically bothers with, plus a weekly beef special that shows up alongside a serious pile of shoestring fries. The Michelin Guide has it on their list.

  13. Rank 14. Tourist

    Wine Bar

Tourist is a tiny wine bar on Blanshard where the reds come chilled and poured into stemware small enough to make you feel oversized. The cheeseburger and the mountain of fried potatoes are the move, and the bottles skew toward small-batch producers from Salt Spring Island. It's a shoebox lit by LED strips, so come after dark, when it looks like a mood board that got built.

  15. Rank 16. Bar Tartare

    Wine Bar

The fridges here run deep with natural, low-intervention, and unfiltered wines from B.C. and further afield, and the staff will pop a cork in your direction before you've even settled in. Bar Tartare is a wine bar tucked inside the Birds and the Beets cafe on Alexander, with a short food menu anchored by the tartare the name promises. Guest chefs rotate through on nights, so the kitchen is never quite the same twice.

  16. Rank 16. The Daughter

    Natural Wine Bar

A natural wine bar on Bayview with over 120 organic and low-intervention bottles, plus a bottle shop if you want to keep the evening going at home. The food runs tapas-style: shared plates, charcuterie, and seasonal small bites that skew Mediterranean. The room is quiet and minimalist, which makes the wine list feel like the main event, because it is.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
