The best Korean food in Canada, according to the experts: The 50, Air Canada, and Canada's 100 Best have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Mhel comes out on top, and the good stuff runs deepest in Vancouver and Toronto.

More Less

Takja BBQ House and Roy's Korean Kitchen hold the next two places. Vancouver Magazine shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Air Canada next.

  1. Rank 1. Mhel

    Korean-Japanese

The name means "anchovy" in a Jeju dialect, and a little fish decal above the door is the only signage you'll notice. Inside this 30-seat Korean-Japanese small plates spot on a quiet Bloor West residential street, the menu rotates daily around seasonal Ontario produce and carefully sourced imports, with a sake list doing most of the heavy lifting on drinks. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a spot on North America's 50 Best.

  2. Rank 2. Takja BBQ House

    Korean Barbecue

The ssämjang is fermented in-house, which is either a signal that the kitchen takes Korean barbecue seriously or that it has too much time on its hands, probably both. This upscale Korean BBQ spot on College Street dry-ages an international roster of proteins and has servers manage the grill so you don't have to. The banchan rotates with the seasons, and the cocktail list leans Korean. Canada's 100 Best landed it at number 46.

  4. Cold noodles made from scratch with sweet potato starch imported from South Korea set the tone before the charcoal even lights. Piggy's is an a la carte Korean BBQ spot in Thornhill that leans into sourcing and culinary culture rather than the all-you-can-eat race to the bottom. The pork ribs are aged in-house and cooked over Korean oak charcoal, and the room fills quickly with people who already know what they're ordering.

  5. Rank 5. Zoomak

    Modern Korean

Zoomak calls itself a modern Korean tavern, which undersells the kitchen by a comfortable margin. The housemade kimchi alone earns its keep, showing up alongside crispy pork bossam and turning up again warm over steamed tofu. Korean fried chicken and pork belly fill out a menu where picking a favorite feels like a trap. The room is loose and friendly, the prices keep pace with the vibe, and nobody's making you feel bad for ordering another round.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
